As good as Tahj is....

Nov 15, 2013, 12:52 PM

Chad Kelly is the zone-read master. There was one play last night where he faked out the entire defensive line, along with my eyes.

I can see why Morris camped out in upstate NY to get this kid.

I think Cole is a smarter runner

Nov 15, 2013, 12:55 PM

Kelly is faster and a better athlete but Cole reminds me of Tajh in that he waits for the right seem to open up before running. Patience is a huge part of running as a QB. Kelly goes full steam ahead most of the time which is fine but he'll need to learn that patience in the future. It could keep him from getting hurt

Around here, life after Boyd will be no fun until

Nov 15, 2013, 12:57 PM

Watson takes over and we all don't trust the backups. A 3 headed monster isn't a good thing at QB.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Watson is a clear redshirt next season

Nov 15, 2013, 1:22 PM

Stoudt starts, hes earned it. Kelly plays a lot. Then in 2015 Kelly and Watson battle it out. No controversy at all next season

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Until Stoudt makes his first mistake.

Nov 15, 2013, 1:25 PM

I'm also not sold that he has really earned anything. Last night started to push me in that direction though.

I hope Watson understands he is a clear red-shirt.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He needs to add 20-25 lbs of muscle

Nov 15, 2013, 2:05 PM

in our offense at 190lbs he wouldn't last. Stoudt clearly has the staff's confidence. He knows the offense inside/out. Kelly has a lot of ability and I see him playing a lot, especially with some packages geared toward him running the ball. Stoudt will start, and I believe, have a really good year. Systems like this, if you look around at teams like Oregon and Baylor, lose QB's yet stay productive. Same will be true here

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd rather there be clear separation and one or the

other just play. Roles must be defined. Pulling one guy for a small pack of plays for another is not ideal in QB land.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sure their will be roles. It will be an open competition

Nov 15, 2013, 3:58 PM

this spring I'm sure, but I'm equally as sure Stoudt wins the job outright. Kelly brings something to the table though and he'll be used, especially around the goal line I'd guess. Short yardage. Everyone knows Taj will run in those situations and rarely is he stopped. No reason Kelly cannot do the same, as he's a better runner. I actually think Watson v. Kelly in 2015 is going to be a far better competition than many think, and that Kelly could win the job

Nov 15, 2013, 4:33 PM [ in reply to Watson is a clear redshirt next season ]

You're kidding, right? Stoudt has earned it? It's a completely open race next year, but I give the edge to Watson and Kelly, since Chad handpicked them for this offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's rookie enthusiasm

Nov 15, 2013, 12:57 PM

Chad knows his best chance for an explosive play is with his feet (see Virginia) because the only back up throwing past the sticks will be cole

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I sure hope we don't redshirt....

Nov 15, 2013, 1:29 PM

what is supposed to be a 5 star, #1 quarterback as a PLAN coming into next year. If he is beaten out, great, but NO WAY should it be a plan to bring someone like him in and automatically redshirt him.

That would be plain stupid.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would PLAN to put some weight on the kid to keep him

Nov 15, 2013, 1:32 PM

healthy.

Redshirting a QB is pretty much never a bad idea, especially when you have other capable starters on the team.

It worked out pretty well for Johnny Football and Winston - but those anecdotes don't really address the benefits of a year in the weight room, learning the playbook etc.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Manziel red shirted I think that plan has worked out well***

He redshirted because they had a 1st Round Pick QB in

Nov 15, 2013, 2:53 PM

front of him in Ryan Tannehill.

I don't think anyone on this board is qualified to say how good Manziel would have been as a true freshman. The Texas A&M coaches seemed to have known he was really special prior to the start of his RS freshman season though to know they needed to keep him in school after his police incident. He was nearly suspended for the semester, and he would have been had the coaches not pulled some strings.

Texas Tech is starting a True Freshman QB this year, and he is having some success, even though he's nowhere near the caliber of player of Watson.

Cole Stoudt looks like a good passer, but he now has had

Nov 15, 2013, 1:47 PM

2 fumbles lost in very limited action this season. As a QB in this offense that is expected to run the ball some, that just can't happen.

I think both Stoudt and Kelly will play against Georgia unless there is a great separation. Kelly just seems like a great competitor, which isn't always seen in practice. I also hope we go to a more run-oriented offense next year, which may favor Kelly. I think our offense is very good this year, but not elite due to a lack of a dominant run-game. Auburn, Oregon, Ohio State, and Baylor are all spread offense teams as well, but they're averaging 295+ ypg rushing. We're at 173 ypg rushing.

Auburn's whole offense is running the ball though. they have thrown it like 30 times the last 3 games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Given Stoudt's low total snap count, I would give him

Nov 15, 2013, 4:38 PM [ in reply to Cole Stoudt looks like a good passer, but he now has had ]

the benefit of the doubt for letting the ball get stripped a couple of times. There is a lot of difference between practice and the real aggression you get from the opponent's defense.

I'm hoping he gets a shot for at least more than 1 quarter if not an entire half against The Citadel. We'll see then what he's made of. After all, his pass efficiency overall through the UVA game was higher than Boyd's. So he deserves some extra and maybe longer time in the ring before I call him a fumbler.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

which is fine, but Tajh is the all-time ACC king of QBs.

Check the record books. Move over Rivers. #10 is the boss.
