Wasted scholarship?

Jan 22, 2016, 4:56 PM

Do you think the following is a wasted scholarship?

2-star prospect at wide receiver
5'11'', 168 pounds
Offers from App State, Wofford, Furman, PC, and Gardner Webb

If you said yes, Hunter Renfrow says hi.

I wonder why we didn't offer him out of high school ?

Because he was coming to Clemson anyway and scholi's were scarce at that time. This kid was going to bama as a walk on. Evidently, Dabo sees something in the kid and wants him. We had some scholi's available with some leaving for the NFL, so why let those scholi's go to waste until next year? Dabo is more than a football coach, he is a mentor and leader of men. Perhaps he sees that a kid with football skills needs this for him and his Dad. First and 2nd stingers gotta practice against someone, so why not one that is good. Heck, it may make a lot of people feel foolish if he breaks into the 2Deep. Renfrow did it, why can't he?

On paper yes but this 2 star receiver torched the Alabama secondary. Can't always judge a player by his size. Hunter is the real deal for sure.

Re: Hunter was a walkon

Hunter was a walkon that earned his scholarship through hard work. There is nothing wrong with giving a kid a preferred walkon spot.

I would much rather see guys like the Davis twins(Linebackers), Dj Greenlee(Linebackers), Amir Trapp(DB) and Brian Dawkins Jr(DB)follow the same path as Hunter Renfrow. If they work hard and earn a scholarship, great! If not, we have the room to bring in some better players to help with depth, which was a big problem at LB this year(according to Coach Venables) where we have some questionable takes.

In H.S. he was a spectacular MVP (M.B. area) qb - 5' 9" 155

Jan 22, 2016, 5:51 PM

Hunter could do everything and beat out some big time hs athletes for MVP, wildcat type qb running passing and punting. The only thing that held him back was his size from big school offers. Thankfully, he wanted to prove himself with Tigers, and I don't remember him catching a pass in H.S. But what an all-around athlete! I think those smaller schools wanted him at QB! What guts he took to walk on as a receiver.

What people don't understand...

Is that our coach is networking. These are good players and I'm glad they chose to be a Tiger, but Swinney is building relationships beyond the players that will pay dividends later on down the road.

Huge difference. Hunter earned his scholarship.

Jan 22, 2016, 9:49 PM

We just offered a scholarship to a no star Safety because he is the son of our Head Coach's friend.
