“open-target season” which unfolds after FBS conference championship games take place throughout the first weekend of December which is effectively college football’s de facto free agency period, is a gross understatement.

Coach of a team that's 0-5 in their last 5 games blames NIL. Interesting that he waited until now to complain instead of when they were undefeated at 4-0. Washington State has always been at a disadvantage in the Pac-12. They won't be a P5 team much longer, but it sounds like the Mountain West might be a better fit for them anyway. NIL isn't the reason why Washington State lost to Stanford last week, nor is it the reason why they have a sub-.500 all-time record.

Except he didn’t blame their record on NIL…
You typed an awful lot of words to try and put words in his mouth.

Oh NIL isn't responsible for their ALLTIME record?–good to know, I'm sure many had been blaming those seasons prior to 2020-21 on NIL-

It can't happen midseason. The portal is not open - you can't enter it until the December window.

I would guess (and just a guess), there was a discussion between the player and coach to meet or beat his current offer. They coach told him to pack his bags.

...due to the dissolution of the PAC12. WSU and OSU are going to lose a lot of players that didn't sign up for playing in the Mountain West, their most likely new home. I believe he knows that. No amount of increased NIL support will solve that problem at either school.

I preferred college athletics when a scholarship really meant something. All this supposed TV revenue has built beautiful facilities and made coaches zillionaires but has it made it better? No going back now and sadly Clemson does not have a front row seat at the trough currently.

Why not control this stuff by going with the old rules of players sitting out a year when they transfer, as was done in years past? I believe that if that rule was reinstated, much of the ship jumping would be eliminated.

Ask Justin Fields and people like him. Just cry racism and you get a special transfer exemption. The same crap (exemptions not racism) happens at the high school level to get a kid to a school that he doesn’t live near or is a position of need for that program. Rules are for suckers to follow, right Harbaugh?
