I was really disappointed with the USA swimming this olympics. Gymnastics was once again really good, just wish our men gymnast would step it up. Track & Field really did save the day though. It feels like China dominates in the random events that we don't really compete in.

I didn’t watch diving this year - seems like that is one area where the Chinese seemingly always dominates.

Their heavily favorite lifter in one of the lighter men’s weights choked by failing to get a lift in after having a 10kg lead going into the last round. Hurt his leg or something

Everybody dopes. Just look at how many of our own athletes have been "diagnosed" with asthma, ADHD, and other conditions that allow them to take performance-enhancing drugs that they wouldn't otherwise be allowed to use. Olympic drug tests are really IQ tests. Some people get caught, but most of them get away with it.

They’ve been firing back by claiming all out swimmers have “purple face” after the races and that in indicates doping.

The US has had more Olympic medals taken away for doping than China has. Maybe they're just better at getting away with it than everyone else, but they're certainly no Russia.

from some people, like a subconscious thought that Asian people can't be elite in sports, especially strength or speed ones.
I do think they have mastered a very systematic way of gathering as many medals as possible by targeting sports with lower competition laser focus on like weightlifting, artistic swimming, shooting, diving.
It feels a little mechanic but I don't think they are widespread cheating. It's just the affect of a country of 1.4 billion really caring about the results and pouring resources into it.
I think it's good we actually have a rival to challenge us in gold medals to replace to Soviet Union rival from decades back.

avoided punishment by claiming (on multiple occasions) that the swimmers unknowingly ate tainted food.

It's interesting that it was kept quiet even from most members of WADA and not handled through the usual channels. I'm guessing some high-ups at WADA are being bribed by Chinese officials. Anyone familiar with FIFA should be aware of how corrupt international sports governing bodies have been (and likely still are). Most of the financial windfall from these positions has historically come from accepting bribes rather than salary.

Its funny how we compete with China for most golds

But we rarely actually compete with them head to head in any sports. We dominate the sports they suck in and they dominate the sports we suck in.
Only exception is some swimming events and some gymnastics. But China has fallen back in gymnastics recently.

US would have won anyway. The IOC prioritizing Gold over everything else is dumb, and always has been. If the US only had one gold medal and China had 30 fewer total medals how does that make China the top country? Spoiler Alert: It doesn't. In no world does 90 out weigh 126.

Silver and bronze medals are just glorified participation trophies. Would you rather Clemson go to the CFP 3 times and never win it, or go only 1 time and win a national championship? I think most of us would prefer the latter.

Interesting overall medal tables
Aug 12, 2024, 12:58 PM

USA has garnered the most medals in the Summer Olympics (and most gold medals). And, we are 2nd in the most medals for the Winter Olympics (2nd in gold medals behind Norway). Of course, we have the most for the combined Olympics medals. 🥇🥈🥉
