UPDATE ON LAB WORK PRAYER REQUEST

Well, fellow Tiger fans. I have some good and sad news. The good news is that it has been determined that I am too mean to die young barring any sudden accidents. The sad news is that I have the beginning stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) (Stage 2). Now that CKD has been determined, they must run more test to rule out major causes which could be a number of factors that have contributed to this condition. It could be from high blood pressure caused by stress, past drinking habits, burn pits from Iraq/Afghanistan, frequent dehydration, lupus, or other issues. So far, it does not appear that I have leukemia which is a plus. I did have a severe Vitamin K and Vitamin D deficiency so I will start supplementing a multivitamin daily. I have been advised by my provider to make lifestyle changes. At 41, I sometimes still eat and drink (soft drinks) as if I am only 21. I mean, who does not love a large pizza, a 2-liter Pepsi, or a juicy steak topped off with a rack of ribs? So, if anyone of you witnesses me at a Tiger tailgate stuffing my face, be sure to scold me for it. GO TIGERS!

You can do it Brother.
My bloodwork went to crap last fall. Blood sugar, kidney function and liver function. It woke me up and I made a tremendous change to my crappy diet. Now 40 pounds later all bloodwork is perfect. Quite a scare but I needed it.
We are with you if you need moral support.

I just pray every day and I've long quit drinking alcohol, but it doesn't help that I used to drink a great deal in my youth.

I have medical education and can definitively tell you that by year five of drinking abstinence; all damage should be reversed. The human body is pretty resilient. I’ve seen livers that were all but toast make complete recoveries over years of abstinence.
I’ve also seen spinal cord injuries completely reroute around damages areas kinda like a highway bypass to alleviate traffic.
I think the most exciting findings as of late are brain recovery. Studies have shown evidence that the brain can regenerate from many types of damage and neuron loss under the right conditions. We used to think intelligence was set. Studies have shown evidence this isn’t true. Jim Qwik is a prime example. He had a terrible traumatic brain injury as a kid and has worked hard to become one of the smartest people on the planet.
Some studies show that prayer and intention have higher success for people that have no support and people praying for them. Others say that it’s bogus. I tend to lean towards prayer works.
My point is if you do the right things; your body should recover given enough time. Keep following providers directions. Put the right things in your body. Supplement things you’re missing. I will keep you in my prayers. You’ve got this!

so that we can continue to pray for you. Third, a large pizza and a two liter Pepsi? A steak and a rack of ribs? Maybe we should do small pizza and a CAN of diet Pepsi. Maybe a 8 oz steak instead of the twelve oz ribeye? Mabe the rack of ribs the next weekend. Don't want to kill your fun but a few doable changes could make a big difference? Does your wife make you run to the mess hall? How about the latrine? Add a few things back in from your marine days. You've got this.

I work out daily so I have a decent amount of muscle mass and I'm fairly lean, but my cholesterol levels do not match my outward appearance. So, you're correct in saying that I need to alter the diet a little bit. I'm not a young buck anymore unless you're asking Lightbulb Bill. I mean, everyone on here is younger than him in his wise old age, but I still get your point.

I have a cousin that is totally dependent on my wife and I for all his needs. He has had Stage 3 kidney failure for year now. We cut out his sweets and soft drinks mostly. We do give him some on occasion. We believe this had helped to keep his kidney problems where it is and not advanced. Maybe this will help you.

I was 50 and started running. I got up to 1/2 marathons. Completely changed my diet. Did away with fried foods, drank no sweetened drinks, and made sure my diet included micro nutrients that often get overlooked. If tracking your diet is something your interested in I recommend using MyFitnessPal. It's a free app that is very useful. All that said my cholesterol didn't go down at all. Both sides of my family have high cholesterol. So, it's been a statin for me since then.

I'm on a statin too but I also swear by fish oil for bringing down cholesterol, as well as beets or beet supplements. Do 1200 mcgs 2X a day on the fish oil. Mine came down dramatically...

My HDL levels are high and LDL levels are low. However, my triglycerides are still high. They said that dieting would definitely help with that.

Statins made me feel like crap, caused weight gain and made me achy all over. I had no problem telling my Cardiologist that I was not going to live this way and would stop taking them if it didn't get fixed. He was shocked when I said what good is it when I die with no cholesterol but they have to take the sliding doors out to load me in the hearse because I'm so big.
After experimenting with the doctor with multiple statins, we found out a generic for Crestor (Rosouvastatin) 10mg taken every other day and a non-statin, Ezetimibe, everyday did the trick. I'm active, lost 20 lbs and keep my bad cholesterol around 70 and don't eat a special diet. As I've gotten older, I have cut down on portions and do eat less red meat.
Oh, and my triglycerides have been staying in the mid 90s since all this got settled out.
You can do it, if I could as hard headed as I am. 🙏

Prayers for you Chesty. Lifestyle changes (healthy diet) may be difficult at first but become habit after a while. You apparently are a disciplined Marine and working out daily ( that's half or more of the battle), so changing food regimens will easier for you - just do it and don't look back. After a couple of months it will be normal to eat healthier. I know from experience.
If a 77 year old fart can do it, I know a young Marine can.

Based on your background, I am guessing you are good at taking orders. The doctor is your General. Do as he says and follow his orders and I'm sure you will rebound accordingly. Prayers up for you and these lifestyle changes you will make.

Those soft drinks are an absolute addiction in themselves. Hard to give those up! Praising God for the positive report, as the condition seems to be treatable with lifestyle changes and meds. You are not alone and my continued prayer for you is that you are surrounded by good doctors and a support system that helps every step. You got this!!

Find a good sublingual D3 + K2 supplement - I hear those are the best.
And get some sun whenever possible.

Buckle down and do the right thing and you'll be adding quality commentary 25 years from now. And always: Keep the Good Lord at the helm and He will keep you in His care.

Speak with your doctor about getting your vitamin D up to a a specific target serum level using a higher dosage vitamin D supplement. Multi vitamin doesn’t have near enough to overcome a severe deficiency unless you spend plenty of time with your shirt off in the sunshine (eg an hour of gardening each day). Which I doubt is the case because you wouldn’t be so deficient. The good news is a corrected Vitamin D level will help ward off severe respiratory infections.

I had a bleeding ulcer 10 years ago that woke me up. I was drinking 2 - 3 twenty ounce diet cokes a day. Haven't drank a soft drink since. Took a few weeks to get used to it but I don't miss it at all. Learn to eat high protein foods and stay away from the whites(potatoes, rice , bread and pasta). Watch the sweets and you will be OK. Take the 7 days, 3 meals a day = 21 meals a week approach. Make sure 18 are really healthy. Give yourself your pizza night and don't go to crazy on the other 2. Eat healthy high fat and protein snacks. God bless.

Lifestyle changes can be difficult, but only if a person is stubborn and refuses to mend his ways.
You're still young and should have retained enough of your military discipline to adapt. Best wishes to you.

Glad to hear no leukemia/ lymphoma diagnosis, prayers definitely answered there. As for the CKD 2 diagnosis that is very common as we age as kidney function starts to decline around 35 and goes to 0 by age 140 - or when you die whichever comes first. Best advice there is stay well hydrated and keep BP & BS u dear control (BS = blood sugar) both of which are diet & lifestyle related though heredity important as well. My guess is you had to be fasting for your blood work so relatively low fluid intake for the 10-12 hours prior to blood draw. You may have somewhat dehydrated so the kidney function numbers would reflect that. Next time blood draw be sure to drink plenty water before you go. Not to disparage your intended lifestyle changes nor the exposure injuries during your service but definitely a wake up call- so stay on track with those. Those will pay off in the long run. God bless

Sounds like you know what needs to be done, so as the ad said, Just Do It. The main thing is sticking with it such as keeping up with regular blood work. Talk to your doc about any changes or anything that looks out of normal. Simple things like what mom said: eat right, drink plenty of water, get plenty of exercise (which sounds like you do) and get plenty of sleep. This rival fan appreciates your service, and I'm praying you will live to see plenty of defeats to my Dawgs! (ha ha) You got this.
