HUGE news for Clemson lacrosse

Alexa Spallina, the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2025, has switched her commitment to Clemson after previously being committed to Syracuse since September 2023. She was set to join her brothers Joey (a former No. 1 recruit), Brett and Jake with the Orange.

Clemson also has Natalie Shurtleff, the No. 2 player in the class out of storied St. Paul’s (Md.). Clemson also has a five-star goalie in the class with Tessa DeLuca (Maryvale Prep, Md.), and a few four-stars.

According to Inside Lacrosse, "Spallina is a powerful presence with a high IQ and strength around the crease who has been evaluated in the 90s by Inside Lacrosse. She’s continued her progression with another All-Long Island and All-American year at Mount Sinai."

The No. 1 and No. 2 players in the class, and I've heard whispers another huge target is on the way. Big news for Allison Kwolek and her staff.

Kwolek will realize she’s employed by a southern school and recognize there are good players outside of MD and Long Island

Edit—-ok, this was overly snarky, my bad. I’m not dogging the program nor am I anything other than happy with these signees. I am a little frustrated with our larger recruiting focus.

SEC doesn't have Lacrosse so when we join the SEC we will have to park it in the Big East or somewhere else anyway.

@dhood , we've secured commitments from several top drawer transfers. Especially one that's an absolute dog on defense and harassing teams into turnovers. It's surreal.

As for obed, yes there's talent in the south. As is all over the country. But lax up here in middle to high school is just on a different level than most of the southern teams. Girls that can take over a match as a true freshman... without much development.

I think Allison knows what she's doing. Afterall, no other coach of any sport in Clemson history has recruited as she has. Yes, not even Dabo. Sorry if that offends anyone.

Say I’m very, very well versed at lacrosse recruiting, and I can say without hesitation that she has blinders on when it comes to the south.

As for it being different there? Here in 2024 tons of girls in the south are traveling to play with the NE club teams and FL is full of satellite teams from the northern programs like skywalkers, yellow jackets, etc.

I know of at least 3 girls from the southeast who were top 10-20 in their position nationally (one who would have been a Tiger legacy) and didn’t get so much as a hello from her at Clemson’s own camp. She might be going with what she knows, but it’s ignorant in 2024 to recruit regionally like it’s 2010, and it’s a slap in the face for a sport expanding into the south to continue with the same old same old mid-Atlantic only recruiting for a coach employed by a decidedly southern school.

You certainly claim to be an expert in a lot of areas. Obviously self stated that you're well connected and have "sources " like dhood. Perhaps you're a big donor and get to smouse with coaches and AD. I don't. I did however spend 69 years in the south carolina and Clemson area. Say what you will, but lax may as well have been cricket.

True, it's been a long time since I've been in high school but I sure didn't hear a lot of parents conversate over taking their children to lax practice. I do up here. It's advertised all over the place.

Now, just because you had one big pocket parent that their child got dissed by a coach is childish at best. Actually, our program and our TWO whole camps are way too young to deduct any reasonable assessment of what Allison's policies are...

Say what you want, but you're not building a successful lax program at the current time recruiting the south. We're probably a decade away from that. I'm confident she will pivot when needed.

If that's the case, then why don't you rip Rittman a new one because his lazy a$$ ain't cutting it. Yet, from you it's crickets.

When you're hob knobbing with your inside sources, ask them why Monte was sold he could get to Omaha consistently thru recruiting south carolina talent only.

“ You certainly claim to be an expert in a lot of areas. Obviously self stated that you're well connected and have "sources " like dhood. Perhaps you're a big donor and get to smouse with coaches and AD.”

I don’t recall ever claiming being “well connected”. Used to be a lot better connected but new regime has circled the wagons well.

“ True, it's been a long time since I've been in high school but I sure didn't hear a lot of parents conversate over taking their children to lax practice. I do up here. It's advertised all over the place.”

If you haven’t been involved in lacrosse in the last decade or so, it’s changed massively in its national reach and quality of talent outside of the normal hotbeds. I’m basing it on a lot more than who I hear “conversating”. I have coached for about 15 years at multiple levels and have a child playing for a D1 program, and have had multiple players I coach go D1-D3 over the years.

“ Now, just because you had one big pocket parent that their child got dissed by a coach is childish at best. Actually, our program and our TWO whole camps are way too young to deduct any reasonable assessment of what Allison's policies are...”

You assume something that’s not true. It’s three parents I know of from GA and TN with almost identical experiences. Also very friendly with a parent whose daughter was recruited to transfer from another D1 school and basically give a glorified team manager position when she arrived.

“ Say what you want, but you're not building a successful lax program at the current time recruiting the south. We're probably a decade away from that. I'm confident she will pivot when needed.”

You don’t know that any more than I do. Our results don’t match the talent we do have yet and we have barely scratched the surface of national recruiting, much less Southern to know that it wasn’t working. Ask Boston College how going into Texas to get Charlotte North helped towards building a successful lacrosse program.

“ If that's the case, then why don't you rip Rittman a new one because his lazy a$$ ain't cutting it. Yet, from you it's crickets.”.

I talk about what I know about. I don’t know softball (or care all that much TBH). I do know lacrosse.

“ When you're hob knobbing with your inside sources, ask them why Monte was sold he could get to Omaha consistently thru recruiting south carolina talent only.”

See my line above. I care even less about college baseball.

This defensiveness is unwarranted. I’m not attacking the program or the coach. I am saying that here in 2024 a broader evaluation is needed. She got a great head start by launching right after Covid, when Clemson was the school du jour for mid Atlantic parents to want to send their kids to the south. She needs to now search broader and build more coach/club connections in the south. Not only will it help the program, it will help the in-state enthusiasm for the program and the sport.

So your kid got dissed by Clemson and you couldn't force the coach to recruit your kid, no matter who you had fighting your battle?

The rest seems made up. The only managers on the team are the Clemson Life kids. Soooo, if what you're saying is true, the player must enjoy it because they've only had 1 player transfer to another program... Ever. ... And that girl has yet to play in another collegiate game.

"Broader evaluation"? Clemson has kids from Florida, to Mass, to Texas, to SC.

Don't be mad that they're recruiting at the highest level. Who on the team is your kid better than? They're at their roster limit.

Come on, man.

Ok man, it’s all made up. Easier than listening to someone with a background in the sport I suppose. Are you the coach’s husband or something? Daughter on the team? What’s your angle here for arguing like your life depends on it that everything is perfect, to the point you’d rather label me as a fraud and try to discredit me than discuss the topic? I’ve been around here for a quarter century now and I certainly don’t have a reputation as a liar, so you’re pretty far off base.

No, my daughter is not in the equation I’m discussing. She’s a great player but the counterparts on the team at her position are no slouch so I have no grudge there. You seem to keep trying to get me to discuss individual players on here, and I’m not going to do that. I wouldn’t discuss individual players on my teams publicly any more than I’d discuss individual players on Clemsons lacrosse team publicly. I’ve said all I’m going to say about the close friend who transferred in. Any more and she would be identified, but yes she stuck it out. I have no clue what your transfer out point is, are you trying to disparage that player for “not playing a game since” at a school whose program doesn’t start till 2025?

You’ll have to forgive me if I don’t care much whether you believe me. I’m in the midst of a small world in this sport and everyone knows everyone after spending time in it, whether it’s recruiting connections or coaching connections. I also am close with an individual who was heavy in advisory roles during discussions about the formation of this program, and I know what the school’s expressed desire was for regional engagement at that time, and we aren’t there now. By and large the coaches in this region (club and HS) do not get engagement with the Clemson coaches. It’s just how it is and it’s often perceived as arrogance from the program towards schools and especially clubs as the reason, whether true or not. They can improve that easily if they care to, it’s not hard to do.

However, the game is growing and more and more southern kids are being recruited. The game is growing and that will show over time. Won’t happen overnight.
