I actually made my "Check Engine" light go away. By myself.

I have had Check Engine light on my vehicle for at least 120K of the 150K miles I have owned it.
And like 95% of the population, I have ignored it. Never even tried to figure out what/why. No code search or whatever.

Since it turned 150K, decided to flush my radiator and replace antifreeze last weekend. And changed thermostat while I was doing that just as a PM and was only $15. It was working fine but it was time to do this according to the manual.

Amazingly, light went off. And has stayed off for a week+.

I'm calling the Pope, as I truly believe performed a certified miracle.

On a Yota you push the trip reset button and hold it while cranking the car

Turns it off, no matter the reason.

Oh, also, on a Yota the ONLY reason you get a check engine light is because of mileage. It is simply on a mileage timer for oil changes, etc. I've already turned mine off once on the new car (different mechanism)

No, you get CEL’s for a number of issues, all emissions related.

I get a check engine light, a traction control light, the abs brake light and another light when the gas cap goes bad every 20K miles in my 4runner. Looks like a christmas tree on the dash.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The ridiculous amount of dash lights on is why I didn't buy a Tundra

Of course, I just replaced an injector, have a pretty bad exhaust leak, and the paint on my A-pillars is peeling so maybe I should have dealt with the lights.

correctly.

What idiot thought that a mandatory anti-collision system should have light ON when its working?

woah, my 4Runner does that. It goes of by itself after a certain # of on-offs.

I can sit and do about 20 and it goes off, or just let it go off on it's own.

So you say it's the gas cap? Thanks!

Just read the check engine code in the 2000 Tundra and it came back as...

02 sensor.

BIG SHOCK.

Every check engine light I've had in the last 2 decades has been a faulty 02 sensor.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Toyotas seem very susceptible to those.

actually, my '12 has just over 200K miles, and this just started about a yr ago.

I've never replaced the gas cap on it, nor my '03 2wd Tacoma.

By the way, the '12 had the rear camera not working intermittently for a couple yrs, finally successfully googled it, and turns out it was a wiring harness that was tied down too tight from the factory. Snipped a zip tie, made sure the plug was tight, put the rear door panel back on, and it's worked great ever since.

I have no idea whats up with the gas caps on this car.

They go bad pretty regularly.

And it seems to eat o2 sensors as well, but not as much.

Just ordered one from Amazon, $15.

I haven't replaced the O2 sensors ever. Put one on that '03 Tacoma, 129K miles, not long after I bought it yrs ago w/ maybe 50K miles on it. No troubles with it since.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bad news: That won't work.

Unless you get an OEM cap from Toyota (Not Amazon, because nothing is really OEM on there), it won't work.

Pony up the $30 for the cap from a dealer.

Not on a 2014 Toyota Camry. Or a 2006 Camry. Or a 1996 Camry.

I know in other cars they make the CEL for a bunch of things. I only know this because a Toyota mechanic told me this. And for 235K miles, it was true. And once I did have an emissions issue, and that's another light that comes up.

It may be different on different cars. It's probably different on my car now, since I now get a "maintenance reminder" instead of a CEL. But for 20ish years, on Toyota Camry's, and ona 4Runner a relative had, the CEL came on every 3,000 miles. To the mile. And emissions issues were another light.

2003-2009 4runner maintenance reminders are a "MAINT" light.

They can come on at 3,000 or 5000 miles.

2010 and up 4runners have a "MAINTENANCE REQUIRED" message comes up on the dash digital screen.

CEL's are different for both.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, by law, a CEL is a standardized symbol and color for

Every car sold in the us, and when it’s yellow, it indicates something amiss with the emissions system. Even on those Camrys.

You can also buy a code reader. And as Tiggity® said, most cars have a method for clearing a "check engine" light. If the problem is not resolved, though, it'll just come back.

Due to a stuck open thermostat.

You’ll likely notice the heat actually working this winter as well.

Toyota 5.7l with around 6 /7 years old, ~120K+ miles are becoming not so bulletproof when the head gaskets blow between #5 and #7 cylinders. Owners aren't changing their antifreeze, its becoming acidic, and if the owner is lucky it only attacks the 3 layer steel head gasket. But there have been some that have corroded the block.
