While I don’t necessarily disagree strongly with him on most of his points , I do hope this kinda stuff can serve as motivational fodder for our guys. I do think we’ll need some sort of motivational edge to have success in that game.

I agree with a big percentage of what he said, and I totally agree with him on our defense was being developed the way they should be, and by the end of the season Dabo will have to make a decision whether or not he leaves thing there alone or make a top DC hire. There just isn't enough experience surrounding Goodwin that could help him to become more successful as a DC IMO....

“I think Dabo Swinney is one of the greatest coaches of his generation. I think he’s phenomenal," Matich said. "What I think happened is a sea change that happened all at once. All at once. And I think it caught him a little bit by surprise... The NIL thing and the transfer portal is an instant thing. And a lot of the players that would normally come to Clemson because of the development as future NFL players, the family atmosphere is an amazing thing – that takes a backseat to cash, doesn’t it?
"And I’ve got to wonder, I don’t know this, but because Clemson is in such a beautiful small town environment, I wonder how far they have to go to get a lot of NIL dollars focused into that program. Maybe it’s there and it’s easy and doing it and it’s more difficult, I don’t know. A lot of the programs that they are competing with have a whole of people and a whole lot of business, and it makes it a lot easier to get those contributions.
"There are things that I think Clemson is going to have to iron out. For all of the greatness of Coach Swinney and what he’s built in a national championship program, cash is going to matter to recruits moving forward more than anything else."
That’s probably a sentiment that many of us fans have. Regardless of his actual coaching ability… Will we be able to compete in the NHL world… Combine that with some questionable coaching hires and no wonder people are questioning the direction of the program.

from ATL, Charlotte, Greenville, Charleston & Columbia on a regional level. Nationally, players pull NIL money from corporations like Dr Pepper, Beats, Bojangles (DJ & Cade), etc, etc. The Clemson brand is upper echelon of CFB…players & Clemson’s NIL institute will ink strong deals! Dude who wrote the article is a moron who doesn’t understand NIL!!

Agreed. Dude must be stuck in the 70's . The upstate is one of the fastest growing areas in the country and wedged between the corporate areas you mentioned ATL and CLT. (Columbia not so much - The Greenville TV market (37th largest media market) is much larger than Columbia (76th)

This shows a shocking lack of awareness of how Nielsen DMAs work. It has nothing to do with amount of advertising dollars or anything else. It's just how Nielsen chooses to divide up the country to accurately reflect viewership. Yeah, we have the 37th largest DMA. But we're a huge geographic area to try to do that (it's not the Greenville TV market, it's literally the entire upstate plus a large portion of western North Carolina including Asheville). Columbia is basically just Columbia.
And even if you didn't misunderstand what DMAs are, let's look at the ones above us. #2 Los Angeles (USC); #4 Philly (Penn State); #5, 7, 31, and 35 Texas cities (UT, A&M); #6 Atlanta (UGA); #12 Seattle (Washington); #13, 17, 18, and 39 Florida cities (UF, FSU, Miami); #14 Detroit (Michigan); #21, 23 North Carolina (UNC); #22 Portland (Oregon); #27 Nashville (Tennessee); #32 and 36 Columbus and Cincinnati (Ohio State). These are our direct competitors, and I could be even more specific with others (for example, Nielsen splits up Baton Rouge and New Orleans, but they're all LSU and if you combined the markets, they're bigger). Of the top 15 schools in the rankings right now, the only ones where we have larger television markets are Alabama and Notre Dame. Unfortunately, there also the two schools with (a) the most history they can lean on, and (b) massive fanbases scattered throughout the country.
Is the upstate growing? Yeah, but so is all the South (Greenville is #23 on the list, look who's ahead of it). But more importantly, why is it growing? It's overwhelmingly Yankees coming here to retire. Why would they suddenly develop an intense interest in Clemson football? This point is illogical.

I think we've already seen that you're wrong. We have much smaller NIL deals than some other schools.
Clemson has a small alumni base compared to many schools and not a lot of individuals with extremely deep pockets. That means the deals have to come from national sponsorships like you mentioned (Bojangles, Dr. Pepper, etc.). But national sponsorships only happen if you're nationally relevant. People think of us as a top 5 program still. That belief will erode if we aren't consistently making the playoffs. I think everyone who is realistic knows we're not probably not going to the playoffs this year. That will be three years out. And our starting defense is extremely senior so we are going to be in a bit of rebuild next year (and we open with UGA in Atlanta). Not to mention the ACC is going to dip in relevance. National deals are going to erode. College football is cyclical, and when you're down, you're going to need those in-house donors to come through on NIL, which we don't have. And for these regional deals, to insinuate our regional deals from Greenville and Columbia is on par with other schools near cities like Austin or Los Angeles is just idiotic.
I guarantee you I know far more about NIL than you. You're just wrong.

I think you misunderstand what is actually happening in the current landscape. We are not really talking about $ for a player's intellectual property NIL rights - inking a Bojangles ad deal, etc. We are talking about private booster $ through wealthy individuals or collectives straight up buying players where any NIL rights purchased are subordinate in nature. Also, this private $ coordinates with the AD/Football program through back channels to determine who should be bought in the recruiting process. In addition to that, how much current roster players need to make in direct income payments to stay. Let me be clear, I dislike the current environment. With that being said, it doesn't change the reality of the situation. I won't even get into half of our asst. coaches having 2 years of combined college coaching experience before landing FT jobs at Clemson....

Kind of like when the bag man would give lots of money to the player that would get them and the school in much trouble. Now the bag man money is handed off/donated to a business to back certain players with big NIL deals, and everybody is safe!!!

I believe Clemson, as stated on David Hood’s podcast, is 4th nationally in average NIL distribution to scholarship players, whom are now averaging about $40k a year in NIL $$.

I don't think you'll find many Clemson fans that would disagree with how we feel about Dabo and the great things that he has done at Clemson, but we don't hear about the same NIL deals that are being made at a lot of schools that are located where there is lots of money and big business!!!

I just don't know when we actually stop watching I guess is all.
Our QB has a free car, for example, among other things. What's the limit before we stop watching? I know we don't quite use much direct pay-for-play here yet, but I wonder if that's the outlier?

I think Trevor Matich doesnt know much about OLs
Sep 15, 2023, 1:06 PM

I also think he conveniently neglects to mention RB and secondary
I will grant that FSU has a decent edge at QB and WR positions to this point
But I do not agree that FSU is equal or better in the secondary, OL, DL and LB & RB
I think this game could come down to special teams and that’s a bit of a worry

I think Matich's comment are on the mark for the most part. I am not sure FSU is as good as everyone thinks despite their win over LSU. Even if LSU doesn't lose another game all year, it may still not be a great win for LSU because LSU's schedule is not tough based on what we have seen out of the SEC so far this season.
Do I think Clemson needs to take a giant step forward this week on offense? Absolutely. Clemson needs a clean game on offense. Cade needs to manage the game, be efficient, and eliminate turnovers. And special teams need to work out the bugs.
In regards to NIL, look back at the best players Clemson has had in the last 10 to 15 years. Do you think that every one of those players, especially all the key contributors to national championships, would have come to Clemson if NIL had been active? Would Mike Williams, Dexter Lawrence, Trevor Lawrence, Deshaun Watson, and Travis Etienne have all come to Clemson? Maybe! Maybe not! Clemson is at a disadvantage against schools with larger alumni and associations with big companies. To think otherwise is foolish and you are kidding yourself.
Dabo can still maintain what makes Clemson unique and still use the transfer portal to some degree to fill in gaps in the roster. We are seeing terrible teams completely change their trajectory by using the portal. Dabo could use the portal to take a very good, borderline elite Clemson football program back to the highest level. If the players want Dabo to stay out of the portal they need to perform and live up to their star ratings.

Spot on. Not sure how we can get the top tier players, Watson, Williams, Higgins, etc., if we can’t pay them. Hopefully this pay for play gets reined in. In fact it has to get reined in or the richest schools are going to be left with no one to play, because most schools will have to opt out of the arms race.

Even if Cade plays a perfect game this Saturday, FSU D will be coming after Cade about every play trying to make him make the same mistakes that they have seen him make up to their game against us, that is when we will need for Cade to stand tall and make good decisions. If he can do that, we have a chance....

He has never been trained on how to get the most out of an individual athlete. What training he has is about how each position is supposed to be covered, he had never been a coach coaching/teaching college athletes until Dabo hired him as the DC. Below is his actual coaching experience and he has none!!!

I hear you, but that just didn't seem to be the case in THIS segment, no?
He didn't insist on Clemson using the portal, for example, or even suggest it, for what it's worth.

FSU and Clemson

There is good reason for him to make his claims. FSU has looked very good in 2 straight games. How good is LSU? We are not sure, but they were highly rated. Not so much with S Miss, but FSU dominated. Clemson blew the Duke game and looked bad the first half of our second. But remember that Jordan Travis looked horrible for years. We are going through adjustments and are improving. Will we be ready for FSU. I think its likely that we will be, particularly if our WR's are as much improved as they looked recently. We will not be sure of that until we play FSU. I think it will be a great game.

Yup. Going to be a looooong night. Think Winston FSU vs Clemson. I’m not looking forward to it.

No portal, nice

I don't disagree with some of the talent evaluation, but I gotta say I really like that finally someone didn't say "just go to the portal & use pay-for-play."
To NOT insist on using the portal the way so many others have the past two weeks, I kinda like it, especially considering we have more blue chip players on the roster than ever before, & his question about NIL value in a small town like Clemson/Anderson is relevant (albeit may take years to be able to answer).
