are. I am from the area there and watched that lake fill up. Regardless of that it is horribly sad and senseless. I would hope the shooter gets what they deserve unlike the shooter in Colorado who got life. I suspect this joke will try to kill themselves when cornered. that is often what these pieces of trash often do.

Awful. That is very strange. Unfortunately the camera didn't catch the shooter other than a pants leg. Hopefully there are other cameras around the area.

The camera did catch a picture of the guy pointing the gun. Check out the Daily Mail story.

It's being reported that it was allegedly a "disgruntled" station employee. Prayers to the victims and all who were close to them.

so that doesn't indicate IMO how it could have been random.
I don't know what can be done to stop this kind of thing since anything goes now in this country.

Unfortunately people have been killing each other as long as we've been around. But since roughly 2/3 of all murders in the US are committed using guns, maybe we should look a little more into means by which we can fix this.
(And only 3% of the firearms deaths were deemed justifiable by self defense, making the argument that we need guns to protect ourselves silly)
Now don't get me wrong, I've lived & hunted in rural SC for my whole life and love firearms as much as the next person. I'm not saying get rid of guns completely, but there's gotta be a middle ground between that and where we are now that could help save lives

The idea behind the Second Amendment was great: we don't trust our government, or any government, for that matter, so we're going to hold onto our guns, thank you very much, and if you start taxing without representation again, get out of control, and generally push us around...well, we'll rid ourselves of you. The hard way, if necessary.
I myself agree with the sentiment. The problem is, from a practical standpoint, is that technological innovation has largely rendered the point of the Second Amendment irrelevant. Guns aren't enough to depose an entrenched government anymore. The government has tanks, poison gas, smart bombs, drones, satellites that can see a face from orbit, facial recognition software that can passively watch that camera footage, massive databases...the list goes on and on. Against that, even a large band of malcontents are going to find themselves in much the same boat as the Branch Dravidians in Waco or the Freemen in Montana...it ain't even going to take the Army to get them out, most likely.
So the only thing guns are good for, at the moment, is expedited murder, usually of unarmed civilians. Since guns aren't allowed in workplaces, churches, schools, or public venues like stadiums or movie theatres, that's where some random nut who buys some Glocks and semi-auto assault rifles over the counter can do the most damage...and guess what, that's exactly where they have been committing murder sprees.
The right to gun ownership is very much etched deep into the American psyche, and for good reason, but if these persistent outrages continue even the NRA isn't going to be able to hold off the backlash forever.
The other argument: "if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" does have some merits...but the problem with that argument is, if guns are outlawed, they get expensive. Fast. An assault rifle in the European black market goes for almost $40,000 US...and when you go black market, quality assurances go right out the window, as that Islamic lunatic who just got beat down on a train in France by three strapping young American lads (and one reluctant Englishman, amazing how the more things change, the more things stay the same), found out. When his illegally-procured firearm jammed right as he was about to get rolling.
And if you can afford $40K for an assault rifle, you probably don't need to be a criminal.
Dunno how it's gonna go. I do know if the government ever goes door-to-door collecting said guns, there's going to be an entirely different problem. I certainly wouldn't wanna be the one doing that job.
