I am a little confused. In order to have a concussion, you have to take a hit to the head. There was obviously no targeting, it wasn’t even reviewed. How does he have a concussion? ACC officials are terrible. I saw two similar plays after our game yesterday, and both were called for targeting.

Agree. That was targeting. And Beaux Collins was NOT holding on our initial drive. Ruke was held (jersey being pulked) on a play that thankfully resulted in a sack. Refs were awful!
No penalties called on Nancy State in 1st half. What a joke

He was knocked out cold for about 1min. That requires concussion protocol always.

Maybe it wasn't targeting even though that could have been called. But that was an intentional personal foul bc Shipley was hit after he was already down. But IMO, it should have been targeting with the player being ejected, plus it should have been an unnecessary roughness call attached to the targeting. If a Clemson player would have been the one hitting a NC State player like that after he was down, both targeting and the personal foul penalty WOULD have been called!!!

It was not targeting, and it wasn't a dirty play. If you've watched Shipley, that's one of his patented moves to rotate and spin backwards. If you watch it, he hits on his rump and when he lands, his head whiplashed backwards and slammed the ground. He was barely touched.
While I agree that acc refs are terrible. Not sure where you read it wasn't reviewed because the booth office, or whatever it's called, did indeed review it. Hth.
Great news that it's not neck related. Probably back for unc game. Good thing is we get to see the young guys play. Ashamed Jay's hurt.

“He was barely touched. “
He had to leave the game. They did x-rays. He’s gonna be out a couple weeks.
Not sure what game you watched. Not sure what play you’ve read about.

Sorry Clemgalalways®, but I’m completely with ‘89 on this. Barely touched? You need to check the replay(s). The defender definitely came in with his head lowered. I’ve always thought the game is far too fast to determine whether the defender’s intentionally ‘targeting’ - only he can answer that question, whether he will admit or not - and often the offensive player is moving/lowering his head as well. But in this case, there was CLEARLY helmet to helmet contact.
If I hadn’t already deleted my recording, I would replay and show some stills/video….

I've looked at it from all angles, fast and slow. The helmets may have grazed each but wasn't what caused any injuries.
It was actually his arm and then shoulder that hit ship in the back and neck area. But ship was twisting at an odd angle and moment. When the defender hit him with his arm, he got hurt. It's nearly identical with what happens in a car accident when you hit an immovable object. Just merely an unfortunate accident based on two objects twisting in the wrong direction.
The defender did everything he could to turn his head out the way. So essentially the same thing could have happened if the defender was just laying there.
Not familiar with 89 but he/she epitomizes the typical knee jerk fan reaction. Mob mentality. Most all objectivity has disappeared from T-Net. Even Dabo has become very defensive and adopted the attitude that everyone is out to get Clemson.

Looks to me it should have been called: Article 3 does say making forcible contact with the crown of the helmet but then refers to Note 1. Note 1 c. is all that was needed. Also, Article 4 says for a defenseless player. seems a guy on the ground would with his back toward the oncoming tackler would be defenseless. Both Articles specifiy "when in question, it's a foul."
Rule 9, Section 1, Articles 3 and 4 define targeting this way:
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact with the Crown of the Helmet
ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul. ..
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player
ARTICLE 4. No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting. When in question, it is a foul. ...
Note 1: "Targeting" means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indications of targeting (emphasis NCAA's) include but are not limited to:
a. Launch-a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area b. A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground c. Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area d. Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet
Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14). When in question, a player is defenseless. Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to:
A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier A player on the ground A player obviously out of the play A player who receives a blind-side block A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped A quarterback any time after a change of possession a ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet first"

Totally agree with Clemgal except the barely touched part. He took a really hard hit but it was not targeting. Shipley was upended by another player and the guy that hit him was just trying to keep him out of the end zone. Lots of moving parts at the time of the hit. Clean, hard hit. Nothing more. Anyone that thinks it was dirty or targeting is softer than our football team.

You can hit the ball carrier in the head

He's not a defenseless player. You just can't launch or lead with the crown of the helmet. If it's the face mask / front of the helmet that makes contact its legal.

Did you see how hard he was hit in the back of the head by #7s shoulder pads? Even though it wasn't helmet to helmet it can still be targeting. He vulnerable and going down. Nothing in the rule says helmet.
The NCAA's targeting rule prohibits players from initiating forcible contact against an opponent that “goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball,” according to the rulebook.

ACC officiating remains my 1st reason that Clemson leaves the ACC

First and foremost, and I mean essentially at ANY COST, including the GOR.
They represent the VERY WORST of the sport, and Clemson players SUFFER OVER and OVER and OVER for this BLATANT disregard for Clemson players by ACC officials.
It is difficult to express my DISGUST for this league’s officiating.

Dabo and the entire sideline should have been going ape #### and forced the review.
I assume the box has a better view and would have pushed them to get the refs to at least stop and give an explanation.

Let's go back to last week. The refs did NOT review the goal line play where Ship broke the plain before fumbling. Quickly spotted the ball as if to say nothing to see hear, moving on

That was the scariest injury I've seen to a Tiger since Mike Williams in the 2015 Wofford game. I'm thankful Ship was able to walk off the field.

We love you Ship, you've had a great time at Clemson, but don't kill yourself trying to save your team, if you and Phil had some real OLinemen opening a hole at least 1 in 4 times you guys could get some downfield yardage. Wish you well and get back soon brother!! Ps Velcro that F'ing ball to your glove.
Like I said before don't kill yourself trying to do it all, Dabo get some OL and DL beef out of the Portal that will get the job done. Time to step up your game or regress 15 years, see what your counterparts have done??? especially Mike N. FS hello Dabo????? You don't have the beef to compete at the top four level any longer.
