I didn't know if DJ would even come back to Clemson.

He's 2,300 miles from his hometown. He had a rough 2021 on the field, along with trying family matters on the west coast. I wouldn't have blamed him if he decided to transfer back out west.
But it doesn't appear to at all what he wanted.
But DJ came back to Clemson. He studied the position and trained since the bowl game, and he got himself back in shape. He came back focused on keeping his job. Gotta like that.

Why? It all depends on how agile he is. If he can scramble good at 240 then no need to lose more weight. He could be a heck of a running threat at 240. He could lay licks on L.B. instead of taking licks from them.

All of that but, to me it just seems like DJ hasn't took ownership of how really bad his last season was as a leader, and that his discipline of staying in playing shape was all on him regardless of injuries, or any other negatives that plagued the team last season. There were enough good things that could have made a big difference with last season if DJ himself would have been in shape, and played his best ball the way he performed in the two game that he played the season before when Trevor was out with covid.
IMO, if DJ would have been in shape, and played the way he played against BC, and ND in his first two starts, our 2021 team would have been a much better team than it was. DJ as a freshmen in two starts, in shape, He threw 30-of-41 passes for 342 yards with two passing touchdowns and no interceptions, DJ also rushed six times for 25 yards with a rushing touchdown against BC in the biggest come from behind win in Clemson FB history. He was the offensive player of the game, along with being the ACC Rookie of the Week. Move on to the Notre Dame game,
In shape freshman DJ hit 29-of-44 passes for 439 yards with two passing touchdowns, and a rushing TD AT #4 ND, and that was the 3d most yards in a game by a freshman QB, an in shape DJ topped DW4's record of 435 yards by a freshman QB. That says a lot about DJ as a freshman QB in shape bc, DW4 set a pile of ACC and Clemson records!!!
Move on to 2021 season with a grossly over weight DJ Uiagalelei that didn't look anything like the 2020 DJ Uiagalelei that was in shape, and earned Two straight Rookie of the Week Honors as a freshman QB that broke DW4's record of the most yards passed in a single game.
In 2021, Sophomore DJ Uiagalelei stunk up the place with his performances in about every game he played, and the main cause for DJ stinking so much in his Sophomore year, was bc he went into the off season knowing that he was the starting QB, and I believe he slacked off with everything he should have been doing in the off season to gain strength, and to keep his body in top condition while waiting on fall camp. IMO, he used to much of his time kicking it with his friends, and eating. I mean there is no way you gain 35-40 pounds in an off season unless you're doing a lot of eating, and much less training getting ready for fall camp.
Personally I would like to hear DJ admit that last season was on him bc he didn't do all the right things to get himself ready for fall camp, and his Sophomore season. With the shape that he played in 2021, there is no way he done what he should have been doing. Even with the injuries we had 2021. If DJ would have been in the same shape, and played like he did against BC, and ND, I believe our Tigers would have at least been in the playoff conversation bc, I think we win the Pitt game, and probably the UGA game if DJ would have been in shape, and played the same way as he played against BC, and ND. Yes I do believe that bc, it's really hard to gain the weight that DJ gained while working out getting ready in the off season, for the 2021 season!!!!

Seems to me with all the improvements he's working on he, in fact, is taking ownership of his part of the 2021 offensive issues. We all know - and it's been discussed ad nauseum on this board - he was not the only problem. As many have noted in this thread, he's not a quitter and is working hard to be successful this season. Actions speak a lot louder than words.

Obviously, I don't know where DJ was mentally last season, but if there was depression involved due to family and physical issues, it would have been difficult to carry on. But, he did.

I think youre a good poster and solid fan. I agree with your points, BUT we have to remember that this is a young guy who's family was breaking up over the 2021 season. Some people can compartmentalize that, some cant. Last season was painful for all of us, but Im gonna let it go. This year, the 2020 DJ has got to show up or his career may be over; think about that for stress on a young man. Personally, Im praying for him...

Gave DJ more $hit and grief than I did during the Season, but the fact that he has lost weight, changed his diet and is BACK at Clemson….well, this tells me alot about this young man. There is “no quit” in this young man and I, for one, have a new found respect for him. I truly admire this quality in a young person and will shift my gears and pull for him to be one of the best to ever play for us…..”Go Big Cinco”……counting on you big guy!!!!!

He said he went home and was eating substantially and then realized he needed to lose weight. He’s 240 now. His playing weight last year was listed as 240 (of course that toggles a bit for most). Therefore, for the most part, sounds to me like he just lost weight that had recently been added. So, honestly, I’m not that impressed.

Good point. I don't track the players weight so thought maybe he actually had lost weight. So from what you are saying he is back to square one. So if true, no one is impressed.

If he can look inside that 270 lb DJ that he played last year with, and find that DJ that he played with in 2020, I think that everybody in T-Nation will be happy/glad that he came back to finish out his career as a Tiger, but if he can't, he will catch more chit than any 1 or 2 fans could ever put him him through!!! I believe there is a NC winning DJ in a 230-235 pound DJ Uiagalelei, but there is a dud in a DJ that tries to play at 250-280 pounds, we have seen 12 games of that DJ already, and nobody liked what they seen. Well, the DC our opponents loved him!!!!!!

Glad he is putting in the effort. I really am. However all of that is pointless if you can't throw the football with some degree of accuracy. Hopefully he puts just as much effort into that part of his game.

DJ wasn't good last year

but I love the attitude he has now and I'm pulling for the young man.
Many on here gave DJ shyatt because he was training in California with a QB coach. Those guys have to feel stupid now when DJ said that he isn't allowed to train with Streeter though he would have preferred to.
I hope he has an amazing year, not just for the Tigers but for DJ too.
Go Tigers!!

Seems like he's better at saying the right things and making point less gestures than he is at playing QB but I would love to be proven wrong. He's probably still here primarily because nobody else wanted him after last seasons debacle. He has all the tools however so there's still hope that he can figure things out. He won't get nearly as much of a chance to screw everything up this season as he did last year.

that would have taken DJ had he entered the portal, you are either blinded by your disappointment last year or know little of what is on rosters at schools throughout this country. Even not being in the portal, he was courted by multiple schools in major conferences. Had he actually entered the portal, his number would have been blown up.
Last year was not good.
But I give any player (DJ included) that looked to make physical changes to their body to try and get better and to return to the place he made his commitment to play...Clemson.
DJ looks good. He will get a 2nd chance. There is competition now in the room, unlike last year.
He will either be the best we have at QB or not. But, at least for March, he is doing everything in his power (it appears) to be a better player.
Hats off to him.

I'm not jumping on the DJ Heisman train or anything, gotta see something in a game first, but this improved athleticism can only help Clemson, whether he or Cade starts. Y'all need to quit being negative.

I was one who expected him to portal out at the end of the season, then TP does and suddenly that option looked to be closed. I'm glad he's rededicating himself to his craft and to self-care. Between his parent's separation, the failures onfield and all the little voices hovering around, he has no place to go but up and if he does, so much the better for the team.
Let's not turn this into KB vs TL 2.0, but trust the coaches to pick the best chance for us, not just at QB, but everywhere.
