You can't ignore the truth. We used to brag about Top 5 recruiting classes and now we hold our breath and hope we can stay in the Top 15. The loss of Jeff Scott in recruiting and WR coaching has been a real downer. Losing BV as DC was a huge blow that left a huge gap. Streeter, don't even go there right now. In-game adjustments: Poor. Portal management: non-existent.
We are still a very good program but we are not an elite program. We are now falling further behind. I guess we may still be able to be a consistent Top 10 or Top 15 program if we keep doing what we are doing but perennial Top 5 or consistent playoff participant is not going to be in the cards if we don't change some things.
Maybe that sounds too pessimistic to some but I think it is more realistic than some would like to admit.

In 2016, we had:
Jeff Scott at OC Venables at DC Deshaun Watson at QB Wayne Gallman at RB Mike Williams, Hunter Renfrow, Artavis Scott, Ray-Ray, Deon Cain, Cornell Powell, and Diondre Overton at Wide Receiver Jordan Leggett at Tight End Mitch Hyatt, Anchrum, Hearn, Crowder, and Gullermo on the offensive line Austin Bryant, Carlos Watkins, Christian Wilkins, and Clelin Ferrell on the defensive line Edmond and Tankersley as our cornerbacks
Other than kicker, linebacker, and maybe running back (because of Mafah who I think would be truly elite with a really good offensive line), we are clearly worse at every single position now than we were in 2016. Yes, we didn't have top 5 "rated" classes, but we had classes in the top 3 when you looked at average per-recruit rating. We didn't have top 5 classes because we signed much fewer players, because we lost fewer players. That's no longer the case.

How many top 5 recruiting classes has Dabo had? I’ll tell you. Twice by rivals and twice by 247. Stop acting like we’ve always ranked in the top 5. We won both national championships with 0 top 5 classes.

And DW4 and TL16 were so instrumental to natl championships. Saban, Smart, likely Ryan Day, Texas, the real USC and a few others are likely to out recruit Clemson most years. QB is the most important position on the field and the equalizer. So Cade will be extremely important, more important than any other Tiger player in terms of W-L's over the next couple of years.

While I do agree that the QB position is of paramount importance, having great receivers who can, A, get open, B, catch the ball, and C, run away from defenders are critical things missing. And, oh by the way, having an OL with a right guard who does his job of blocking his man, rather than going over to help the tackle who is doing fine on his own and thus allowing QB sacks and/or hurries or busted plays would be nice, too. Also, having DB's and Safeties who do their jobs with coverage would be nice, too. Add to those, having coaches who game plan and make adjustments would be nice, too. Spoiled, I guess, but those things fix our issues and take us back to an elite status.

I agree 100%, but coaching matters as well as talent. We’ve coached lesser rank recruiting classes more successfully. This staff just isn’t getting it done. The program is too proud and arrogant and not very hungry. I dare say if we had Carolina’s hunger and fire we’d be in the CFP.

Would you mind telling me how many classes Dabo has had that were in the top 5 in per-recruit ranking? If you sign 15 top 150 players, but only have a 17 person class (you don't need more players if people aren't transferring out or declaring early), you will typically rate lower than other programs who sign 30. So I'd like to see how our "per-recruit" rating if you wouldn't mind.

Then find another team to root for! There are a LOT of programs that would love to be where Clemson Football is at. Every year is different, every team is different. Every class of players are different. Dabo and Co will get the tigers back again. Unless all the negativity runs him off. THEN you will definitely see a SLIP in the program. So either support these kids or move on to another team.

I have been a Tiger fan too long to change now. I guess you are a new bandwagon fan. You think that I should be happy because things are better than in the past. The thing is we have advantages now that make it easier to stay at the top than get back if we backslide.
Recruiting is essential despite what some people say. Regardless, of rankings you cannot deny the talent that we had on our National Championship teams. Kids want to play for elite programs so it is much easier to recruit.
Winning brings in money. If you don't believe that money makes a difference, then you probably don't think the SEC is the best conference. There is a reason and that is money. As success fades, so will the bank account.
Money and status also give us the ability to attract the best coaches. If Dabo decides there needs to be a coaching change, then I hope he does it while Clemson is still an attractive destination.
Yeah, I think I'll just stick with Clemson, but it doesn't mean that I will be satisfied even if Dabo is. Very few of us will knock you for remaining a fan as well. Just don't criticize us because we want Best to remain the standard.

Are we in decline??? Ask yourself: When was the last time we beat an elite opponent? Answer: Dec. 28, 2019. We beat Ohio State after Trevor and Tee Higgins brought us back. We have lost EVERY BIG GAME since then, including getting stomped in the champtionship game that year by Joe Burrow and LSU. (Winning the Cheese-Whiz bowl last year does not count; Iowa State was not an elite opponent). Against the Vols, we saw what it is like to have the kind of depth that we do not have, at most if not all positions. Tennessee lost their star quarterback and just plugged in another star, who was game MVP. Their two best receivers were not present. They just plugged in other great receivers. And that does not count their depth at other key positions, including offensive and defensive lines. The same is true of Georgia and Ohio State, among other elite programs: They have studs ready to go if starters get hurt. We just don’t have that kind of depth, and we haven’t since 2019. We were beaten by a better team last night.

Allowing Paul the pleasure of plopping out that tidbit on every show he has should be illegal at least in the state of South Carolina and one of Dabo’s team goals to make him eat those words.

And he keeps repeating his success of winning the ACC, people aren't as stupid as he may feel they are, and they know that it doesn't take a powerhouse FB program to do what he has done in the ACC. How many times can you beat Bama, UGA, and LSU, and even 10AC. Just about all 4 of those programs in most years can win the ACC....

If we keep treading water while programs like Miami, FSU, and UNC keep recruiting and charging ahead the way they are, we won't be the toughest team in a soft conference much longer. We really need to do some soul-searching and adjusting in the off-season.

Well, let’s hope reflection will result in doing some things differently. I wouldn’t expect CDS to respond in any other way in that venue. He is definitely going to protect his program and players.
Kornblut always wants to ask the ‘tough’ question and give himself credit during his weak show.
Are we slipping? We are losing ground to some teams FSU and maybe Miami on how they are trying to build…to catch up to us.
If you are standing still then you are losing ground.
Still, I expect that answer from Coach in that environment.

Fans is short for fanatic. Want to see fanaticism at its best, troll any fan board in America. Are we on a bit of a downturn? Yes. You guys make it sound like it is over. We have experienced a 12 year run that only one other college football program in the country has ever done. Alabama. News flash: Dabo never had back to back top 5 recruiting classes. Only after the players developed and were re-ranked did they earn that distinction. Case in point was the power rangers class, top 15 (barely) but when re-ranked on their way out they earned top 5. Were spoiled brats. We’re the elite of the elite. I spent 31 years waiting for an 11 win season. You’re whining over a top 10-12 finish. Unbelievable. The NFL teams can’t win the bowl every year. I guarantee you almost any college team would trade records with Dabo. One wouldn’t. Alabama. They are only a few win better in that span. Be careful with all this pissing and moaning. Dabo May grow as weary of it as I have and leave. Then, the program WILL take a step back. I have a deep and firm belief that Dabo will win more National Championships here. If we let him do his job. The sky isn’t falling. Enjoy this run because it WILL end one day. I thought Charlie Pell and Danny Ford would keep Clemson at the top. Ford left and it took generations to climb back up.

You threatening Dabo leaving as if he’s the best coach in the country is absurd. The so-called extremists on the right, only look extreme, because of how far the left has gone
Dec 31, 2022, 3:12 PM
|
|
The New York Times did a story about maybe 10 years ago that showed that the Democrats are more to the left than liberals in Europe. The Republicans, however, are closer to the center than ever. And this is coming from the New York Times 10 years ago, and things are even worse today! The left has moved even further to the left and the establishment Republicans have drug the right closer to the center.
It wasn’t that long ago that Tulsi was a hero and a rockstar on the left. She sounds like a traditional Republican now. And she hasn’t changed at all. About the only thing she has changed on is the second amendment because now she realizes that even in America the government can become authoritarian and tyrannical. It was Covid that woke her up and now she understands why the founding fathers made the second amendment part of the bill of rights.
And this is a story that is coming from millions of Democrats that have moved to the right politically, but yet their beliefs have not changed. They all say I didn’t leave the left the Democrats left me!

Dabo threatening to leave Clemson is hilarious. Clemson fans are some of the most patient cuckolded fans in the country. If he went to Alabama, they would chew him up and spit him out! And he knows that which is why he would never leave Clemson for another program. He has it made here. And that’s the problem. He’s too #### comfortable!

Look, I’m a HUGE Danny Ford fan. And after Tigers lost him, they were a up and down program. A few good years mixed with some mediocre years. Dabo has taken this program to where it’s NEVER been before. Even farther than the Ford years. Nobody is in Saban class. So if you think that if Dabo leaves this program won’t slip, you are mistaken. Yes there are other great coaches out there. But even that would take time to establish his program. Losing a very successful head coach affects a program.

The problem with your comment about developing players, which is correct they did that. In fact I remember espn in 2016 shkiwing a stat about how Clemson has been able to get more production from three and four star recruits than any team in the country because of the way they developed them. With NIL and the portal that no longer exists. The second a player feels as though he’s not getting what he deserves he’s out!! Alabama is able to maintain at the elite level because of the way they recruit. They average more players entering the portal than we do. Look at their 28 recruits. 14 of their recruits have a rating of .96 or higher. 26 of their recruits are .90 or higher. Only 13 of our 26 recruits are rated .90 or higher. Bama has seven five stars to our one! That makes a difference. Swinney is a great coach. He believes in the idea of the team not the individual and in our me centered society that’s not working!! Not even close.
Last nights game plan was a disgrace on both sides of the ball. Joe Milton is a career 56% passer. His accuracy issues were exacerbated when he faced pressure. So what does the brilliant DC that some were calling “Weslicheck” do? He decided to use a lot of three man fronts and drop guys into coverage rather than bring pressure? He picked Clemson apart when he had time. In offense we ask a true freshman starting his first game to throw 54 times? Really? Dabo doesn’t have a say in the plan?

Clemson program HAS slipped - it's a matter of FACT, and
Dec 31, 2022, 1:42 PM
|
|
it's not open for debate. It's not a matter of opinion. We were a consistent playoff team, finishing in the top 4 every year for six straight years. Last year we finished 16/14 and failed to make the playoff. This year we failed to make the playoff again, and will possibly finish outside of the top 10 again.
So to say that we haven't already slipped is flat out false. Dabo needs to acknowledge that.
That doesn't mean that Dabo should be fired. It doesn't necessarily mean that anybody should be fired. We are still easily one of the best football programs in the country. 95% of all other schools would kill to be where we are.
As fans and supporters, we all need to appreciate that.
Here's the reality, and the big picture ... We still very much have a top tier football program that most other schools would love to have. Our success over the last decade has been phenominal, almost unbelieveable, as we became one of the top 4, maybe top 2 programs in the country, and sustained that for some time. As a result, that bacame the expectation. Now, for the last two years, we have fallen from top 4 to top 15. That's understandably disappointing, but it's not the end of the world. No need to fire people or rip things out by the roots and start over. We are still very close and could be right back in the top 4 mix.
So, here's what I'd like to hear from Dabo: "Yes, we have slipped a little. I understand the concern and disappointment. We know that, and we are working hard to get back to that elite level. We did that largely due to two generational, first round NFL QBs, and getting and developing those guys is difficult, and we may not always be so fortunate, but we keep trying. We also had a slew of NFL 1st round WRs, and that, for various reasons, has not panned out as well for us recently. I'm very aware of it and will continue to work on it. I hear and am aware of all of the criticisms, but ultimately, those decisions lie with me. If my record and performance here is not good enough, get somebody else. If my job is contingent upon me being publicly critical of my players or coaches in order to please fans, I'm out. In the mean time, I'll keep doing what got us to that elite level as best as I can."
As fans, we need to take a deep breath, keep our expectations realistic, realize that we are still in a very envious position, and have a little faith that we will get back to the truly elite level, as we are not that far off.

Right there with you smiling. The better question to have asked Dabo is what you said:
I would ask him this. Dabo, you had an incredible run last decade. What will it take to have another run like that?

Excellent observations. I don't necessarily have to hear Dabo say it. I just have to see the signs it is being addressed. Tennessee beat us last night the way we used to beat people, with explosive plays resulting in TDs. We need a QB And WRs that can make that happen. We may have the QB on hand, but frankly I don't think we have the WRs. There is no Williams, Higgins or Ross on our team. There may be a Renfrow. I would like to see evidence he is addressing this. IMO, the landscape has changed and there are more formidable competitors for these type of players and it is not realistic to expect to be in the Top 4 every year but with the playoff changing, it is not unreasonable to expect to make the playoffs on a consistent basis.

I would love to hear that answer from Dabo. I would be happy to hear that when you are on top there is only one way to go and we are working hard to get there. What I didn't want to hear is that we haven't slipped from where we were in 2011.

Calling out Dabo as a lie is your opinion
Dec 31, 2022, 1:55 PM

That was his truth! It was his honest opinion!
If you guys are a half a fraction as hard on your wife, kids, yourself, your employer or your finances you must be billionaires and are very disappointed in your family, home & business ...lol
Your life must be full of failures when perfection is your expectation instead of your goal.
Y’all need to step back & realize this is a game and Clemson is very good at it considering size, alumni, finances and history.
Hope you don’t expect this out of your kids?

I get your point. I don't want to see perfection but I do want to see progress. I don't think we can say we have seen progress for the last couple of years and I am concerned about how and when we get it turned around. I do tend to expect the worst and hope for the best but that is my cross to bear

You didn’t see the progress at the ACC championship game or last night in a losing effort? QB play has already improved, as has WR effort. The defense played lights out last night with a few plays that went sideways. Had we been scoring our usual 8-10 points a quarter, we would have been there at the end. It happens. Clemson will be just fine. We were blessed with exceptional talent in the last 5-6 years. That doesn’t happen every single year. Pound for pound, I’ll take “Ship” and “Klub” and Turner anytime.

The fact that he seems to be content with the lack of effective/creative play calling not just this year, but over the last several years tells you everything you need to know… he’s ok with the program regressing. Then when he had the opportunity to hire a new OC, he didn’t hold any interviews and promoted Streeter, who had already struggled as a QB coach and called a horrible game against Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl when TE was out with Covid.

As a lifelong Tiger and Class of 82' (1st Title) For all you dissatisfied fans, there's NOT a Better Coach/Man than Dabo Swinney on the Planet. No one is Perfect!!! Do you really understand the perch that Clemson Football has been occupying for the last 12 years??? Look at what is returning for the 2023 season plus the new kids coming in. There is No One in College Football better positioned for a Run to the 2023 Title than Clemson! Take a breath people..we ran 101 plays of Offense last night and Dominated every category but the Scoreboard....TN earned that Win and We didn't ....This is Football At the Top Tier! Where Clemson has been perched for 12 + years

The simple answer is yes! We lost to everyone this year with a pulse.( badly) And it’s not the players fault, it’s coaches. The offense is predictable. And just plain awkward at times, not to mention when we see we’re having trouble with a pass rush?( instead of putting in an extra back to block( like the stud Mafha ) we go empty backfield. The offensive coordinator is not good enough. BOTTOM LINE!

we have definitely slipped. However, if you are watching the games tonight it’s a fine line. Dabo has to flex some on his model. Different times now with the portal and NIL.
Our play calling on offense is not getting it done either. We just need a change there.

Maybe I should put it more plainly. Until we recruit better at RB and develop better at the receiver position we aren’t going to get to the next level. Ship and Mafah are great backs but we have nothing after that. We have hope with Williams, Randall, and Nolan but it gets real thin after that. We need to get busy at getting some talent quick and our play calling is busch league. Hate putting it that way but something needs to happen sooner than later.

That is such an interesting question. There is no doubt the Swinney years have been Clemson's pinnacle on the gridiron. It is important to realize Coach Swinney has designed a program to fit his vision, and it worked wonderfully for a few years. He has many wonderful attributes, but he has pride of authorship and has not shown himself as someone who tinkers quickly with what he has constructed. Look at how long he stayed with DJ. Look at his views on the portal. Look at how he promotes from within for top staff positions. Look at how long he has been supportive of an OC who has yet to prove himself, and that is using the most modest term possible to describe how poorly things have gone on the offensive side since this OC was selected.
The bottom line is that to expect Coach Swinney to acknowledge that his handiwork needs a major revision, or to admit that the program is in decline as constructed, is to expect too much.
My thoughts are very simple. Of course we are in decline. It is obvious in the increased difficulty we have winning within the ACC. Most of all it is evident in all the 5 and 4 stars that don't even have us on their list of possibles. A recent article about all the 5 stars who had not committed in the first announcement of 2023 draft choices had a bunch of players who were considering 3-5 schools apiece. Clemson was not mentioned by one of these 5 stars. We are now offering scholarships to 3 stars, and recently (if I recall correctly) to a 2 star. It seems to me we would be going for more 4's and 5's if they were interested, or if they fit into the Coach's preference for God-fearing recruits.
I think the aura is not gone, but is going, that we are sliding back towards the ACC pack. Coach Swinney is proud of the past, and with good reason. However, he does not answer the question of whether the program is slipping by pointing to the future. He only speaks of past glories. We want more of what we had before, and I have lingering doubts Coach Swinney's vision and tendency towards inflexibility will provide it.

One sign is the number of regular season losses. During the playoff run, we lost three games. In 2021, we lost three. During 2022, we lost two more. Three in six years, five in two years. Looks like slippage to me. I hope he can reverse the trend. The six year playoff period was great. We might need to adjust our expectations.

11-3 & an ACC Championship is a pretty dang good year My only gripe over the course of the season is why didnt we run the ball all over South Carolina when it was working & was rlly the strength of the offense. And by run the ball I mean the running backs shouldve had upwards of 35 carries against Carolina. If we commit to running the ball against Notre Dame we wouldve had a better shot at them as well, especially considering the foul weather not being conducive to the passing game... but I feel like we wouldve rolled Carolina. I only saw the 4th quarter against Tennessee, where it looked liked we were just being outplayed, but I guess we didnt capitalize on good drives in the first half, which probably set the tone & was too much too overcome & snowballed on us against a quality opponent. Way to keep fighting though
Happy New Year & Congrats on another stellar season The consistency under Dabo has been tremendous<3
