He’s coaching this week but it’s uncertain if he’ll coach their bowl game

With all he has done at UNC, I would have said he has decided to step down.***

Good point. Because I think I remember someone posted on here a couple weeks ago that he was coming back. Might have been an interview or something.

I am sure there are contractual reasons he could not "step down" and had to be fired. It probably would have cost him millions to just quit.

I would assume that they tried to take things in that direction, but he wanted to stay.

I guess when you do something you truly love, it must be incredibly hard to step away. I don’t have that issue…I’m 55 and trying to figure out how to make the numbers work, sooner rather than later…ha!

If they actually did approach him about stepping down then I think he missed an opportunity to bow out gracefully…or maybe he gets more money if they fire him versus stepping down?

Maybe UNC wouldn't pay him what's left on his contract if he retired.

It was reported this weekend that he intended to return next year

Jack Leggett situation?

I believe he did but there is a reason he was fired.

Of course it's because UNC wanted a change at the HCing position but there is another reason, imo. Perhaps it had something to do with severance pay or negotiations.

They don't have a very impressive class at this point. Mack has lost his touch on the recruiting trail as well. I personally think he's a stooge, but I just hold a grudge for his quitting on us after the 2009 championship game loss.

Agreed. It was time to move on. Take some time and effort to run a program. He can afford to retire. Unc should have found him an athletic dept. support role and then let him leave or retire. His late 80’s coaches show was great as unc was very bad back then. Mack was asked to open a convenience store chain called 0&11 back then!

he fired himself earlier in the season after James Madison steam rolled them. He's been trying to back away from that utter since. The AD said not so fast my friend. And Mack goes out looking foolish

I understand he may have refused to resign, but seems like the best approach would've been to wait till after the NCSU game. The focus would be on that game only. The UVA game may have been the last straw.
