Kid was a stud in HS, Monte tried to get him toward the end of his senior year but just didn't have the funds, plus Dad is a Citadel grad and ortho.

Kid has ton of upside and this is a very nice addition.

Not exactly blown away by the numbers, especially for a 5th-year socon player. I'm not enamored with the 5.97 era.

But interestingly enough, some of his other metrics look better. This season he had 37.2 innings pitched, allowing just 25 hits and 29 runs (25 earned). He had 48 strikeouts and held opponents to just a .194 batting average. Those numbers look good.

I think what explains the discrepancy here between the era and the batting average against is that he allowed 28 walks and threw 9 wild pitches. So if I had to guess, it looks like the story with this guy may be that he has good swing-and-miss stuff (some of y'all pointed out he's got a nice curve) and doesn't get hit a lot, but what gets him in trouble is his command and tendency to walk people.

So the question for Luke at Clemson this coming season will be can he improve his command and cut down on the walks to go along with his already good stuff. If he can, he could be one of the team's top relievers next season. But if he continues to struggle with the walks, that may limit his ability to be a reliable option in high-leverage situations. Hopefully he can get in some good work this offseason with Belanger and it will wind up being the former situation and not the latter. At the very least, he'll add a veteran presence and some depth to a bullpen in need of help.

Another thing to consider

He was obviously coming in as a reliever. He more than likely inherited men on base. So, even though less than 1 in 5 batters faced got a hit, the likelihood of it causing a run or multiple runs is much higher than that of a starter. The walks and wild pitches only compound that...

Except inherited runners don’t count against your ERA

ERA is tricky for bullpen pitchers, let's say Kissenberth get in the game two runners on you strike a guy out then walk one, strike another guy out. Next batter gets a hit scores 2 runs. He gets pulled. Next pitcher comes in gives up a hit, then the guys the other two guys score that goes to Kissenberth era. I'm sure there is some crazy advance stat that shows your era only while your pitching regardless of runners inherited or not.

Meh...decent when he can find the strike zone...and that's a "when" that's not too often.
