I saw that. I find it hard to believe Elliott would turn down Tennessee just to take the Virginia job a year later. May have been a misunderstanding there somewhere.

I mean, you can get an offer from a brand name and the fit not be right.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he turned down the offer because some aspects of the job might not gel with him moving forward.

Honestly, looking at it on paper, Tony Elliott's personality would probably fit more with VA than UT.

No chance he got a real offer. He would have made far more money, had better recruiting, and had more resources to play with. He just wasn't expecting to get called out.

Actually, there's more opportunity with the uva gig. It wouldn't take anywhere near as much to turn around uva. If Elliott gets the program to even, it would be a major accomplishment and an easy springboard to something bigger. He gets the chance to screw up, without huge repercussions, and he has several years to figure out what works. UT? Not much margin for error.

Tennessee was an absolute dumpster fire and looked like it would be a minimum of 10 years to fix that program, also had pending NCAA sanctions. UVA and Bronco had a solid program and were in the ACC title game the year before. Come on man, you’re better than that.

Re: TNET: Tennessee AD calls out Tony Elliott over insulating he had a Vols offer

1

Aug 22, 2023, 9:48 PM

UT has a lot of booster money. The right coach and they will give him the sky. It was a dumpster fire compared to what it was 10 years ago, but compared to uva, not even close. Uva is not a football school. It's definitely had its moments, but nowhere near the same level as Tenn. The point is that Elliott, or whoever, only has to do moderately well to move up. Tenn, if you don't produce, you go backwards

Sure he wasn't. He was interested in a dumpster fire program UVA instead.
There is no was he was offered or that he was going to be offered. He simply "checked the box" on requirements to interview a minority.

Re: I see is as TE was not interested in UT so they didn't

UT was kind of a dumpster fire when he interviewed, with potential sanctions lurking in the shadows. I could see why Tony wouldn't want to have to deal with some of their boosters. He seems like a better fit at UVA anyway.

My thoughts exactly. Black cloud hanging over that program and then it was uncertain on which way that would have went. First coaching job should not be Tennessee imo. Get ran out of there fairly quick if things don’t go well.

I guess you do not like truth. I can "pull for the tigers" without putting on orange lensed glasses. NOTHING about T.E. qualified him for that job. His stats as coordinator, not co-cootdinator were not good. Everyone in the know, knew he was riding the T.L. horse. Without a generational Q.B. like T.L., Tony Elliot would have looked like crap.
Just watch UVA.He will be mediocre at best.

I get the Tennessee AD not wanting his program to be misrepresented but

12

Aug 22, 2023, 2:37 PM

That just seems like a tacky response. TE showered your school and program with praise. If you want him not to talk about it, or if you remember the situation differently, give him a call. Maybe you were never going to offer him but he stopped the process before it got to that. I just don’t see TE intentionally misrepresenting the situation.

"So when it came down to it, I prayed about it and said I wanted the Lord to lead me in the direction that He'd have me to go."

It was not the right time for him because the offer did not come.

As Brent Veneables has said..."less is more." Probably advisable that TE not go into that detail and just compliment UT....but White should THINK, WAIT(Why Am I Talking) and take it as a compliment. Again, too sensitive. You wouldn't see Neff do something like this...

Tony's exact words leave the impression he was offered. You can't turn down what you were never offered.
What T.RlE. said was an insult to Tennessee that was wrapped in praise.
"You are good. Heck, you are great. But you are not good enough for me."

Sometimes you can just feel it. At the time Tennessee was an on going circus with the troubles they were expericing. Deon Sanders got it cushy compared to what Tennessee had going on in the offices. Tony Elliott probably sensed the pressure cooker there and knew he was going to be in a crockpot and probably felt it wasn't worth it.

Danny White probably doesn't remember because he probably never took Tony Elliott too seriously. Maybe Danny was so boozed out of his mind he doesn't remember what he did that day. Maybe Danny was so geeked up about Huepel he had tunnel vision.

Tony doesn't say he was offered or turned down an offer. He may have told White he was no longer under consideration or simply been waiting to see if a formal offer was made.

And you decided to take the Virginia job over Tennessee… Wow… I can’t imagine how crazy you are.

Tennessee had/has its craziness. They’ve been through their fair share of coaches but Tennessee is a blue blood program and one that your are given everything you need and more to be successful.

So while I think the TN AD probably shouldn’t have responded I also think Tony should be more careful to not make it seem like he really had a choice.

Again, no one o would pick Virginia over Tennessee so it’s clear Tony wasn’t offered the job.

I grew up in East TN. The donors determine who to recruit and sometimes influence who starts in a game. The tail wags the dog in Knoxville.

Those idiots fired Phil Fulmer who was the best coach they had in two decades. Two years out from a conference title and they fired the guy. I lost no love over Fat Fill but he was a good coach. A few coaching changes and they begged him to return to coaching. lol

Aug 23, 2023, 11:48 AM

Elliott should probably not have acted like he had a choice in the whole thing...he's probably just walking thru his logic...its how he thinks.

White should not have responded but if Elliott has gone on record twice acting like he turned them down then I'd be a bit miffed too.

In the end, UT got the better end of that deal. That's easy to say after the obvious yr 1 results, but What Heupel did last year was impressive and Elliott made UVA worse. The Wahoos recruiting is also garbage....just being real, he had one of the worst classes last year in the ACC, will have another crap class and they will probably go 3-9 this year. And UT will beat them 52-7.

I love Elliott but he has a really long road ahead and probably needs to not act like he scorned UT for greener grass in the Albermarle County.
