SI - Where is Great Migration Factor?
Jul 15, 2022, 2:29 PM
|
|
How come they are not factoring the great migration to the South, Southwest, and Rockies? They are caught up in the past and ignoring trends of the last twenty years, and the impact to the next fifty years. Look no further than Highway 17 (SC intercoastal highway) which is busting at the seams.

Why would bustling Highway 17 make Clemson a more appealing team to a major conference?

That list makes sense to me. There is so much more to schools than just football.

" Clemson obviously has had a superior football program but lags in all-sports ranking. (Which, ultimately, is the most disposable of the metrics here.)"
Since we don't field a lot of the sports in the Director's Cup, it would make sense that we don't rank high in this metric.

"Clemson checked in at No. 16 overall in the measure that weighs football rankings over the last five years, academic ranking, all-sports ranking, football attendance and broadcast viewership."
There is so much more concerning "desirability" of a school. The campus, town, safety and so on. To paraphrase Dabo, if a recruit visits Clemson we win.

It is the "desirability" to a major conference, not to recruits. It's like y'all didn't get the point of the article. Greg Sankey isn't saying "let's add Clemson because the campus is safe."

Most on here just whine whenever Clemson isn't #1 in some ranking.
We are a smaller school with no big media markets. We have very limited success in sports outside of football. 16th feels right to me

I do not think they geared this just to football. It is a ranking based on the desirability among all Power 5 schools in all sports. I can see #16, while our Football is great, Softball is good, Mens Soccer good/great, however, baseball has fallen off, lets not talk about Basketball both men/women. If it was just Football, Clemson would be a Top 3.

1 sport is the determining factor. You don't see schools cutting ties and joining the more powerful, better paying rival conferences over basketball. If basketball is rarely if EVER a consideration then the other sports are not given a second thought. Unless hypothetically, SC was a member of the ACC looking to move to the SEC & their football program not the joke it is in reality. One might take into consideration the STRESS being a WBB power has put on the athletic department. Their WBB program enjoyed recent success now 2x NC but with revenue in the red (as usual). As a result of their success and an irrational BOT following the advice of their inept AD, elect to pay their HC 4Mil a year.

I can't believe all of the butt-hurt in the comments. I guess we should be glad that "reading comprehension" wasn't one of the factors.
This is about the appeal of schools to a major conference. We're... third amongst schools not already in the B1G or SEC, behind Notre Dame and Oregon. One could argue for being second there, but it pretty much make sense.
What this ISN'T is a ranking of the favorite schools with recruits or recent football success or quality of life in South Carolina.
Conferences (namely the B1G and SEC) care about brands - a decade ago it was about geographic footprint, which doesn't mean as much now. The B1G also cares about AAU membership - yes, academics - because university research budgets absolutely dwarf athletic budgets.
I have a lot of confidence in the Clemson brand, but whether they could add enough value to the SEC to increase the average media payout for every single team in the SEC is anybody's guess. It's why I am slightly skeptical about the idea that we are going to two 20 to 24 team super-conferences. Look at the last four major teams to move - Oklahoma, Texas, UCLA, and USC. Those are major brands that move the needle on revenues. It's a short list of more teams that could do the same - Notre Dame, maybe Oregon and Washington, maybe Clemson, FSU, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Maybe.

People are quick to put you in the category they want you in

This is like life itself, people are always trying to put people in the place they want you in but that dog won’t hunt at Clemson.
We know we are a top football program, with a great following for eyes watching our games. If we win the National Championship this season that would be 3 National Championship out of 7 and 6 straight playoffs appearances, we played in two nation title game in addition. We’ve had eleven 10 win seasons in a row.
The Clemson brand brings excellence, we are a to 10 team overall any way you look at it. Nobody besides Notre Dame is as valuable outside of the Big10 or SEc.
Clemson will be 1 or second choice for these conferences. If Clemson applied to both already, they’d be fighting over us.
I personally think it’s already a done deal that we are in the SEC. When it’s announced will be interesting.
I wouldn’t wait long because sports in general are losing appeal quickly. A lot can change between now and next year.
So hopefully we have a great plan no matter what it is!
We will be near the top no matter where we go, IPTAY has been a huge blessing to all things Clemson!

I don't think the B1G would ever take us, because we aren't an AAU member. Outside of Notre Dame (also not an AAU member, but still a very prestigious academic university - just without big research programs) the most likely ACC schools for B1G expansion would be UNC, UVA, and/or Georgia Tech.
I do think the SEC makes a lot of sense for us, if the SEC decides that continuing to expand is the way to go. But the money is going to get so crazy that it will be hard for any school to move the needle. I mean, if every school in the SEC takes home between $80 and $100 million annually under their new television contract, a seventeenth SEC school would have to be able to add that much to the value of their television contract, so that every other school doesn't lose money with expansion.
BUT... ESPN is already getting Clemson football via the ACC television deal. So anyone saying Clemson to the SEC would be a sure thing is saying that someone at Disney is thinking (for all practical purposes) "we are already airing Clemson football for $30 million/year, so let's pay them two or three times that, instead!" Sure, there would be some better match-ups, but not that much better.

Wish Tnet hadn't posted this. These numbers seem skewed and bias

I took a good look at this last week. It really just looks like an old list from 30 years ago of mostly larger State schools with football programs. The academic rankings are off, and don't look based on anything very legitimate. One would have a hard time convincing me that Wisconsin, or even your historically 2nd to 3rd tier SEC teams would be ranked higher than Southern Cal, Oklahoma in terms of desirability or brand. UGA is only popular because they just finally won a second championship in January. Washington, really? LSU's academic rank is about #175, Bama's 135, Auburn 100.

I have read elsewhere (so admittedly second-hand) that Washington has the most profitable athletic department in the Pac-12.
Large state schools with football programs are exactly the schools that are appealing to conferences!
