Growing up as a kid in Clemson, we had always heard that there was a door that led underneath the Amphitheater. Just like all young juveniles, we had to find the door and we did! When we found our way into the dark dank dungeon, we found a marvel of stalactites and stalagmites.
It seems the Amphitheater was made from limestone, where most stalactites and stalagmites are found, are mainly composed of calcite, a common mineral found in sedimentary rocks.

The terraces that replaced the wooden benches are okay, but the worst part about the renovations of the late '70s was that they took down some great old trees that provided a lot of shade. I can remember sitting in that shade on those benches, and squirrels would come and eat from your hands. Besides the weathered benches, it's possible that the trees themselves were a problem. There was a movement called "Save Our Amphitheater, People" (SOAP) among the students, but it failed to change any plans. The exposed and sterile replacement just didn't attract students between classes like the original.

I was very much part of the SOAP rally and your statement that it "failed to change any plans" is untrue. The administration "plans" were to tear down the amphitheatre in its entirety so that the library and the fountains would be the main and unobstructed focus of that part of campus. Because the amphitheater was viewed as an "eye sore" by administration, as it had fallen into disrepair over the years, they were quietly planning to eliminate it during the Christmas holidays without anyone knowing until the work was complete. They were going to replace the columns with a simple, low, pink brick wall.
I found out about it in a Student Senate meeting and organized the rally. President Edwards was not very happy with me at the time but the Board did review our plans for renovation vs. destruction and granted our request. The rally we had in October, 1977 made a big difference and drew lots of attention from the media and the alumni as word got out. All that pressure led to the final decision to preserve our amphitheater and it continues to exist now over 40 years later.

What? There was no outcry that "these 18 year old kids are being led astray by some devious individuals with hidden agendas". My, how times have changed. This should gfive hope to our current youth.

I'm glad to know the full story. (Perhaps I knew it better back in the day. 40-year-old memories get fuzzy.) And I'm glad that the most drastic demolition plans were thwarted.

I remember see Hanoi Jane Fonda at the Amphitheater in the late 60's. She found out real quickly that every college isn't a hot bed of liberal teaching. I was standing next to jimmy Howard who was more than vocal during her rant!

I recall, as a 12 year old boy, attending my oldest brother's graduation in 1942, which was held in the Amphitheater. The cadets went up the steps to the left and received their diploma and then walked across to the right and took the oath and were commissioned as Second Lieutenants before departing down the steps on the right. At the conclusion of the ceremony a bugler was located behind a tree on the hill to the left of the stage while another one was located on the hill to the right. They played Taps in echo sequence. It was a very emotional ending since everyone knew that the newly commissioned officers would be leaving within seven days for their assignments.I can't hear Taps today without recalling my emotions from that experience.
Eight years later, in 1950, I participated in that same type of graduation ceremony in the Amphitheater. Only this time the cadets were worrying about the Korean War rather than WW ll.

I have so many fond memories of the Amphitheater. The pep rallies on Thursday nights before games, and we rats threw the male cheerleaders in the old pool at the end of every one. They drained that pool about Oct, 1963 to build the library. After that, we took the cheerleaders up to the Clemson House fountain for their pooling.
I was walking through the dried pool to my 2 PM English 101 class when I heard somebody say that JFK had been shot in Dallas, and I didn't believe it.
My 1967 Class (May 6, 1967) was the last to graduate in the Amphitheater, and I was 4th from the last to receive a BS Degree there. A good friend who now lives in Piedmont was the last. Our ROTC commission ceremonies were held that morning, and I received my AF commission in the TILLMAN HALL Auditorium.
Hats off to those who saved the Amphitheater.

If I recall correctly, my graduation ceremony was held in the amphitheater on 14 May 1966, a day after my 22nd birthday.
Since I received approval to delay my attendance at USAF ROTC summer camp by a year, to after my Clemson graduation, my commissioning took place at Charleston AFB at the end of the summer camp.

If I am reading the post correctly, then the third picture is showing the graduation ceremony from 1940. Can someone confirm? Would love to know because my granddad would be in that picture somewhere.

I think Ace hardware is there now . love to see a photo of The Tiger Den. Many fraternity and sorority folks hung out there as well as
others until about 1983 from about 1967. Bobby wright , lester, sugar ray,whirl, sweets, and other infamous locals. jack harMON WHO INVENTED THE BBQ AT ESSO, AND JIMMY HOWARD ALL WENT HERE. lESTER MOORE OWNED IT.
