We try to get people into physical therapy the day after surgery

to help prevent this type of thing. Some docs make them wait days/weeks before starting, which I find ludicrous except in some special circumstances.

My doctor told me to move around and be active. I bet I walked a mile on crutches the day after my surgery.

My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I had a hip replacement in 2008 at 48 years old. I came home and had physical therapy in home and my leg started swelling more and more I asked the therapist about it and she said it would be fine that it would go down soon. My leg continued to get bigger and bigger but she kept assuring me that it would be fine. Finally i insisted that something was wrong and that i wanted it checked out. So she called her company and they set up an ultra sound at Sptbg Regional Hospital. When the lady finished my ultra sound she rolled me straight to the ER. My hold leg was full of blood clots including the main Artery. They gave me a big shot of blood thinner while they were setting up an IV of it and also started doing test on me. I was in the hospital for a week and they told me I was very lucky that a clot did not go to my lungs. My leg veins are damaged now and I have to take Blood thinners every day for DVT. Warning do not trust others when you feel something is not right.

Post OP DVTs can be prevented with close care. Patients need to be counseled on blood clot symptoms which should be acted on IMMEDIATELY. Having post op pain should trigger IMMEDIATE care. Blood clots left in place longer than about 15 days, even though they can be removed, can cause permanent damage to vein valves which eventually results in poor circulation in the lower leg resulting swelling and ulcers.

So sad. Life sometimes seems unfair especially when someone so young dies. God bless his family and family of friends...
