Clemson safety entering transfer portal
Junior Clemson safety Joseph Charleston has entered the transfer portal, TigerNet has confirmed. Charleston was listed as "unavailable" on Clemson's last two gameday reports. He logged 54 snaps this season with seven tackles. The Milton, Georgia native ranked third on the team in tackles last season Read Update » |

Hate to read that. I thought he may have a breakout year this year, but I guess he was slipping down the depth chart. Good luck to him, but I hate it when a player quits mid-season unless they were a cancer in the locker room.

Makuba takes a bow. Good problem to have. Best to JC. He would be a great addition to a lot of good teams.

Yes. With Makuba and Mickens and Venables and Turner, safety was going to be tough to play. Too bad he wasn't a slot receiver too. The DBs coming back next year better be ready to be challenged by the incoming recruits.

Wouldn't mind seeing him go to coastal.
Do have a question, same as with Lyn J. Why leave during the season? Just to let other coaches know you're available... That's about all I can think of.

He will not be eligible to play at a new school until the spring. The transfer portal isn’t like the pros. It’s not immediate. If he’s played in 4 or less games, he can leave the team now and take a redshirt year. Then spend the remainder of the season taking classes and going on recruiting trips.

Doesn’t it feel like this team is showing a lot of negative indicators? Poor play, coaching being questioned, unable to respond when the chips are down, and the loss of players to the portal. Things are starting to feel really uncomfortable…

I lived on Johnstone D6 for 3 semesters and as a graduate, I can promise you I am not a coot! The only time I like being in Columbia is when I'm on the way out.
Step back and take a look at some obvious points of concern: Spiller hired as the running backs coach - based on what? Just because he was an amazing running back doesn't make him a great or even good coach. Grisham was an awesome receiver but what qualifies him as a next level wide receivers coach?
Good teams are flexible and take advantage of every opportunity to improve. My point was that being so committed to playing with what you have is putting us at a disadvantage when compared to some of the better teams. Not advocating lowering our standards but I can't imagine anyone taking the position that we could benefit from picking up a qualified OL player or two to help with our struggles.
Finally, when we were at the top of the mount, we were praised on how Dabo was able to keep 4 and 5 star players at Clemson even when they were not starters. Well that isn't the case anymore and it is starting to show.
The only good chicken is when it's on the grill...... GO TIGERS

They are all losing players to the portal. Quite a few former Alabama players are starting elsewhere and the same is true for all top teams. Even Bama has a starter on defense from the portal. It's just how it is these days. That doesn't mean Dabo is losing it or anything negative at all, players just want to play and if they are stuck behind somebody, they tend to leave now instead of sticking it out and riding the pine.

No it feels like we are breaking in a whole new team on the offensive side of the ball. Dabo will eventually get it fixed. Be patient and stop with all the knee jerk reactions. To hear some of you talk maybe we should fire everyone and bring Tommy Bowden back. Sheesh!

Actually, Tyler was one of the bright spots in Friday's game. Just because he is the coach's son doesn't mean he can't play. Quite the opposite I would say. Now the Swinney boys...

Good to hear that. He's certainly one of the smallest players on the field. Have you seen how he grades on the independent services such as Pro Football Focus or was that your assessment after watching the film? As an aside our prevent defense has been awful again this year allowing late drives by Tech, NC State, Boston College, as well as the Cuse game. Tyler is usually on the field for these drives. May not have a thing to do with the breakdowns but aside from being small he's not exactly fleet of foot like an Andrew Booth. I would definitely like to hear more details about the attributes he has that have moved him into playing significant snaps while others sit.

Um, he’s a safety. Booth is a CB. Little bit of difference there. Also, CBV doesn’t play a prevent D. If any thing I’m fine with a loss with aggressive play vs going out like Vandy did to the dirtpeckers playing “prevent”.

OK then. I guess he's a safety with cornerback size. He's listed as Sam/Nickel so technically he can be a a LB with cornerback size and linebacker speed. Lots of ways to slice it but if you call him a safety then he's likely the smallest one I have seen at a power 5 school. All good. NFL will be knocking on his door next year to leave early.

He is listed as a safety at 5’10” and 200lb. For comparison I looked up some top safeties. Tykee Smith (Ga) 5’10” 198lb, Joaquin Brisker (Penn St) 6’1”, 200lb, Tre Sterling (Ok St) 5’11” 205. These were listed in the first 5 my search pulled up. Some bigger? Yep, but he’s not an anomaly.

Ugh....actually, you are wrong. BV does play a prevent defense often and it always gives up yardage in chunks, whereas his "normal" defense gives up very little. I always cringe when I see BV go to the Prevent cause I know a drive by the opposing team is coming soon.

This Guy gets it, without Tyler Venables and his sack and redzone interception we Syracuse gets at least a field goal on that early drive and more than likely a TD. At best we would have been tied at the end of the game with the ball in the wrong kind of orange hands. Tell me those orange don't put more points on teh board at the end of the game with a little more blood in the water. Those Venables boys have some of the higher football IQs on the roster. Can you imagine growing up under Coach Venables tutelage, thats an intense dad. I dont sense favoritism from Brent Venables, EVER.
And those Swinney boys are excellent holders. Without Will Swinney, BT might not have made all of his field goals against BC. Talk about a scary situation right there.

But in reality, it’s called quitting the team.
Same thing it would’ve been 30 years ago if a guy walked out halfway through a season.
Not trying to pick on Joseph individually. I’m just disgusted with the direction college football is going in.

Every year, after a kid plays 4 games, you’ll see a mass exodus from rosters via the portal. It’s the nature of the newly created beast. The kids will get the current season back in eligibility.
Charleston fleeing now, gives him 2 years of college eligibility remaining . . . enough time to find a new home and attempt to make his dreams come true.
This is the new norm . . . It is happening at every school . . . We better get use to it!!!

What the heck are we supposed to be adjusting to? We have been having people transfer after 4 games of play since the rule went into effect 4 years ago. The ones transferring mid season are all transferring because of a lack of playing time. For the 3 completed seasons since the rule went into effect we were in the playoff all 3, were in the National Championship 2 of 3, and won the National Championship once.
It is no need to adjust to kids moving somewhere else because they are not getting the playing time here. It is not a bad thing to be so deep that you have quality kids transferring because of the talent in front of them.

Declaring for the portal midseason is absolutely quitting on your team. They both took up a roster spot that may have made some other high school kid's dream come true. Not to mention that it puts your teammates in a bad spot. However, I see nothing wrong with seeking an opportunity elsewhere once the season is over.
At any rate, best of luck to the kid.

I think the extra year for the super seniors is really hurting the team in the long run. Players that would be playing aren’t because of the extra year of eligibility awarded them.

Our team has been built mainly on guys that come in for 3 and head to the NFL, which has worked well against traditional teams. With teams having 5th and 6th year players due to the Covid redshirt our younger guys (not all) are finding the path more difficult against older players. I think this is what may be causing many of our struggles, and will effect CFB as a whole until the extra Covid redshirt year is gone. For this reason I think that looking for some older/ grad student players via portal should at least be an option...

I think the extra year for the super seniors is really hurting the team in the long run. Players that would be playing aren’t because of the extra year of eligibility awarded them.
You sir are 100% correct. I personally was sick to my stomach when I heard all those kids were coming back. Stewart moving on was the only good thing that came out of this mess.

Once again, no play, no stay. Kids want to play and will go where they can.

I don’t see the problem. You recruit the best kids you can sign. Not all of them are gonna rise to the top and start. The system allows them to move on, freeing up a scholly to be used for another great recruit or a potential portal signee, or rewarding a talented walk on. We keep our most talented players and those that are not quite as good get a second chance.

And NIL has ruined my lily white pure CFB!!
We haven’t lost a single player that hurts us. Even DK was a disaster for us last year. He was loafing AND busting coverages

I agree that we have not missed any greatly, but I do think some things need to be tweaked. The 4 game rule initially seemed like a good way to get some kids some playing time while not losing the eligibility on your team. Now it is a way for the kids to judge how they stack up a third of the way through the season to see if they need to look for another team. NIL amplifies this. The kid has a lot better chance at an NIL deal if he is on the field. I think that they need to change the number of games for the red shirt requirement for transfers, so the 4 game rule only applies for the team that you are on.

It really is the college football version of free agency and the trade deadline. Gotta get used to seeing these things every year across the country.

THIS is why I hate the current transfer rules. ANY kid who

winds up #2 on a depth chart can immediately bail out and play immediately elsewhere. With the old rule that required a year sitting out, at least they had to consider some less than immediate consequences. This crap is going to ruin college football if it is not changed.
