Clemson RB enters transfer portal
Clemson's crowded backfield this spring is seeing a departure. Junior running back Chez Mellusi has entered the NCAA transfer portal, TigerNet has confirmed. Mellusi entered 2021 with 427 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 71 carries and five catches for 38 yards and a receiving touchdown in 169 ca Read Update » |

You might be right, but it’s easier for WRs to see the field than RBs. I hope a healthy rotation at WR will make them all want to stay.

He's been separated from the others, for sure. That's why he's moving on. The talent of the others is something he doesn't think he can overcome. I wish him the best, but these issues keep arising as our talent pool becomes deeper and better. It comes with the price of success, I guess.

No, we need to be more thoughtful about recruiting each year and not have 7 scholarship on the depth chart again. 4-5 is a much more ideal target.
I wish one of those scholarships would have been towards a QB, Corner or D lineman.

ET coming back was a surprise, they recruited like he wasn't, they didn't expect Rencher to stay another year, and lastly....they did expect one or more to transfer.

Agreed.
Loved having ETN around in 2020, but I wondered if Lyn-J wished he got those carries. Now with Lyn-J finally at the #1 spot (we can assume), I was hopeful Mellusi was comfortable sharing time or siting at the #2 spot. I'm a bit bummed, because I sure hopeful that Mellusi would have a breakout year.
Speaking of the loaded backfield, I wonder if Rencher (Grad Student) will get significant carries. We all know Dabo like to favor upper classman. Same can be said of Dukes (3* player). He's another player that would be poised to transfer, but may be at the top of the leaderboard in 2021 if Lyn-J leaves next year.
Pace, Mafah, and Shipley are all young and will battle for playing time after 2021.

I think Kobe Pace takes over the starting role by midseason. They'll be split carriers in the first half of all games, and even the freshman will get significant carriers in the 2nd half of most games.

Reacher will get about the same amount of carries as he did last year. Maybe less due to more trust in the young RBs. Dixon and Pace will get most of the carries to start but the freshman will be hard to keep off the field. Curious how Dukes will progress. And I think we have two more coming in next year.

Uh, Lynn-J is not at the 1 spot. Even if he was, he wouldn’t be there alone.
Rencher will not be seeing significant time because he came back. He will see the field, but suggesting because he is senior to the rest as a rationale for his playing is weird at best.

I think Rencher will get as many carries as last year due to being a leader on the team and a good representative in the community. *And he's a decent running back.

ETN was a surprise, but that doesn't close the gap b/n 4 guys on scholarship and 7 (which also doesn't include walk ons). Rencher staying isn't going to have the same impact as ETN.
When we had 3 guys transfer in 2018 (Hunter Johnson, Jerrick Cooper and then Kelly Bryant) that left us with a void in 2018-20/21. We should have immediately looked to add and extra QB the next season as opposed to a RB.
Still with that said, there no way to look at our current situation for 2021 (and yes hindsight is 20/20) and not say over the last 2 years we should have taken at least 1 more QB and 2 less RB's. We knew ETN would not be back at this point, and we knew with almost 100% certainty that Trevor would be gone.

It was Zerrick Cooper, not Jerrick. Tucker Israel also left that year, but it was in January. 4 QBs off the roster.

Since players can enter the portal way after Signing Day, that will not work. If numbers become a problem, Dabo can change and use the portal. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Which QB did we not recruit because we had Chez Mellusi on scholarship?
Which specific blue chip players have we missed out on because we had 7 scholarship running backs.
Not too long ago, we had “way too many” QBs on scholarship. We knew we couldn’t keep them all, but each came to Clemson believing that he could be the man. It worked out really well for us.
This is going to happen with the RBs too.
The cream will rise to the top through competition and that’s a good thing.

That's not the question they would ask themselves.

You don't look at recruiting that way. Position groups are looked at in a vacuum, as if nothing else existed. No coach (head, coordinator or position) would recruit their one room based on the numbers of another group.
The projection they should have been making starting 2 years ago was:
"Where do we stand going into '21,'22,'23 etc with our QB room"?
- It should have been obvious that T Law was going to be gone in 21. DJ would roll out first, Taisun would be the back up. Very quickly you realize you have a sizable drop to Taisun. Then, a bigger drop. Which now we see is a walk on and our punter.
- With Running Back, we took (1) in 2017 (ETN), (1) 2018 (Lynn J), but then took (2) in 2019, (2) in 2020 and another (2) in 2021. Why take (2 RB's) 3 years in a row when taking 1 each year is working.
Last year we had 8 running backs with seasonal yardage, and 7 were on scholarship. However, the 2nd leading RB rusher (Lynn J) got only 190 yards on the season, which was less than Trevor Lawerence. With those numbers, there isn't a need for 7 RB's on scholarship. 4-5 RB's scholarship is the target, b/c even with (2) walk-ons you still have 6-7.
This has nothing to do with Cream rising to the stop, and everything to do with over recruiting at one position and under recruiting at another. It's really quite simple that after QB1, there is very little talent, even before Taisun got hurt. No there is a HUGE void. It's really not debatable and the first time DJ goes out for an injury is going to expose lack of talent.
....Then again, I'm hoping like heck that Hunter Helms is a gunslinger of epic proportions and we don't know it yet.

Exactly what are you expecting from a back-up QB in this day and time? Someone who can come in an lead the team to a national title when the starter goes dow?
I hope not, because it’s simply not realistic to think that the back-up is going to do anything more than perhaps beat Syracuse. Most probably, he’s not going to do anything more than rerun a few plays until the starter can shake off his injury and get back in the game.
A great QB is not sticking around as a back-up more than one year. That’s why we don’t have a great back-up at the moment.
There are no Cardale Joneses willing to sit on the bench today.
We had Taisun, who most would agree was going to be serviceable, but not great. Now we have Helms, who pretty much fills the same profile. Both would get out there and keep us competitive against Syracuse, but not Ohio State or Alabama.
We are where we are ... and we’ll be fine if DJ stays healthy. If he doesn’t, we were SOL anyway.

we have been pretty inconsistent at evaluating Rb's under Elliot, or we are not getting the guys we want. ETN was gifted to us, I think we lucked out with Mafah because of the Grayson Pipeline. UGA and Auburn wanted this kid too, his offer list was impressive.

The transfer portal has created a nightmare situation for managing a team’s roster. What is to prevent an entire position group from leaving? That is why the team is so thin at QB right now. Something has got to give. I feel sorry for the coaches.

As others have said it was bound to happen with at least one or two of our running backs. And frankly in my opinion he makes the most sense to look elsewhere. I think he's pretty good however not Elite or necessarily special. There are a couple of underclassmen already that I see a lot more upside. If Dixon gets the first snaps of the season with some relief from underclassmen then he is pretty much the odd man out in my opinion. With that said I do believe he can be a solid split time possibly even starter at places like Duke, Wake Forest or Vanderbilt. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that I just don't see him being the guy that we need. He reminds me a lot like Choice or Fuller. Guys that we had in the past that were solid contributors and made a great play now and then.

They seem to be out of touch with their own players' feelings and intentions. The fact that they can't keep them tells me a lot about their ability to assess talent and develop that talent as expected.
At least that's what I've learned on the TNet basketball board.
