Yeah the NCAA has some ridiculous rules. Why suspend for the next season. It should be for the current season.

That's bull 💩
Or the coaches could have restrained themselves and waited on the bat spike decision, which turned out to not be an ejection, and then went on coaching the game. Maybe to a win. But we'll never know because they couldn't control themselves. But that's just me.....

We'll never know for sure, but I think they were going to toss Mathes.

They didn't want a repeat of the 3rd inning and it's clear there was a lot emotion on all sides (UF, Clemson, and the umps). The umps wanted to toss someone to "get the game under control and resume without further incident" by making an example. I think the pre-emptive strike from our coaches may have saved Mathes from being ejected because it turned the attention off the player and onto the coaches. They were happy they got to toss someone so they let Mathes stay in having already made their point by tossing our coaches. Smart play by our coaches to be the sacrificial lambs and save their player.

This episode was fueled by one umpire who immediately lost his temper. His temper flared hot, visibly hot which fueled tempers all around. If he had been disciplined in his reaction, this could have been handled without incident. Crighton was rounding third when the out was made and started toward the Clemson bench. He then joined his teammates. He did nothing to earn an ejection. Meanwhile the Florida pitcher was the player who charged back at the Runner and shoved him after the out was called. The pitcher was not penalized for his incitement then or when he spiked his bat after his HR. This was totally mismanaged by the umpires.

Agree! Charged back and shoved our runner after he was out. Should have tossed the pitcher for that alone. Not for the first collision, just baseball. Then he turned and ran into the runner again, and shoved him.

Bull.. they were going to toss the player had Backhich had not come out. There was no need at all for them to huddle. It was the 13 inning in a great game ( other than umpiring) the guy was fired up and in front of his own team… these rules are ridiculous!

I thought the same thing, as far as the player being ejected had the umpires not been on the defensive for the prior ejections for our team. Had they tossed Mathes would the poster you replied to be defending Bakich and Leggett for their reactions.
Clemson gained the momentum and lost it just as quickly. Who knows how that affected us for the final out of the inning or once we went back in the field. You should hardly know that the umpires are there in a game that big, but that crew refused to be invisible.

Or you just don’t understand the game of baseball. EB was up against the worst officiating crew I’ve ever seen the entire day. Billy had an ax to grind with him. Leggett got mad cause they didn’t warn UF whenever they flung bats in celebration. Clearly lopsided. Horrible the entire game. Super proud of our coaches and personally hope O’Sullivan has a horrible experience in Omaha. Can’t stand him.

Everyone was on their last nerve because of the umpires huddling, checking our pitcher’s hat, strike zone, etc. I just knew something else was coming down too. I love our coaches fighting for our players. Sports is a game of emotions. If you don’t have it, you won’t play.

Clemson has to appeal these ejections. These are absurd. Only players that could’ve been ejected would’ve been Nawrocki & Caglione, and more so Caglione for going back for more after the dead ball out. Ejecting Crighton for running back to the dugout is just awful.
Also, Bakich didn’t even “incite the crowd” until after his ejection.
Further, this dude waited OVER 12 HOURS to release a statement about the ejections. Is that really the best we can do?

Pretty sure it’s the best that crew could do. I’ve seen poor officiating before, and that resembles it very well. Never expect good officiating when playing an secheat team, or you’ll be very disappointed.

As a minimum Caglianone should have been ejected for retaliation. His stopping to block the base path started the event and when he pushed Nawrocki in retaliation of being run into for interfering with the base path, there should have been no doubt.
Nawrocki pushed back and should have been gone too.
If Crighton had gone past home plate and stayed on the foul side of the first base line, he would not have been ejected. By turning up the 1st base line in fair territory, he was going to be ejected. I'm sure the fair - foul rule never entered his mind as he turned toward his teammate surrounded by UF players. I like his spunk and support of his teammates.
The end of the game with Bakish and Leggett being suspended was bizzare and could have had a different outcome. I'm sure the Caglianone bat flip at the Clemson dugout in the first inning with no "UMP consultation or warning and the Crighton ejection boiled over until the top blew off.

"Clemson student-athlete (#3) who was on second base at the time of the play which resulted in a possible altercation near first base was ejected from the game for leaving his position on the field because he went to the site of the potential altercation.
I don't understand how that's any different than the UF catcher, 3rd and 2nd basemen leaving their positions.

If they even discussed tossing Mathes for his celebration I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in the umpire meetings when they would officiate Tennessee baseball games in 2022. That clown show of a team celebrated every home run like they just hit a walk off grand slam to win the World Series. Never once saw someone get disciplined for their celebrations that year.

What the Officiating Crew really did that was terrible is pause the game for way too long allowing an emotional shift that was totally unnecessary. Had they been able to continue play without interference, we don’t know what the rest of the 13th would have really looked like.
That crew should be fined regardless of the outcome. They interfered with the flow of the game which should be considered unsportsmanlike in and of itself.
It would be interesting to see if those four called there last game of the season.
Total garbage!

Coaches upset because the officials were completely wrong in how things were handled. The coaches had a right to be unhappy and to express themselves.
Nowhere did the officials address their failings on the field. Game delay, uneven warnings to players, wrongful ejection earlier in the game, no penalty issued UF pitcher for starting physical altercation.
Period.

I disagree with Crighton’s ejection reasoning when there were no UF ejections for similar actions. Leggett and Bakich should have been ejected for their actions when the officiating crew were simply huddled to discuss a matter. I am not defending the officiating or their poor management of the game but just stating my opinion from what I saw from the stands. This team fought hard and deserved better than what they got in this game and I am proud of them. GO TIGERS!!

umpire crew huddling it is because we had been screwed twice in the past year by such BS. Last year against Tennessee in the Regional and this year against Louisville. We are conditioned to this kind of crap at critical times in games and we expected it to happen once again. I agree with other posters that had Backich and Leggett not reacted the way they did it would have been an ejection for Mathes.

I am not a young man, but I definitely remember that sequence of events.
Craaphorst ejected Bakich at the first base foul line. It was after Bakich entered the infield and pursued Craaphorst around and over the pitching mound before headed back to the dugout with his arms raised because the entire crowd (sans the gator fans) had Bakich's back.

Very similar to the Louisville game this year and the Tennessee game last year. Instigators left alone, double standard rule applications from then on out. The only thing they did right was not tossing Mathes after all, but the discussion was ridiculous considering the nature of the game and the emotions involved. Mathes directed his energy to Clemson's dugout, not the Florida pitcher or players or dugout which to me is the ulimate factor in determining an unsportsmanlike in that situation. Had they handled the earlier situation correctly they would not have had Bakich and Leggett on them like they did. Same thing at Louisville. Had they tossed their kid for obvious taunting and ignoring warnings like they should have it would have been over then and there.

I was at the game and I think that if they had ejected Mathes, mayhem would have broken out. The crowd was beyond furious at that point. I think Bakich reacted the way he did was because he had had it. He had put up with their bull long enough.

Home plate ump’s strike zone was an ever-changing amoeba shape and only opened up when Neely was pitching. Olenchuk for one was completely screwed in his first at bat.
The constant huddles were an annoyance and less emotion would have weathered that but it was clear, even from the one camera TV angle, that it was 15-11 in favor of the crew and UF.
Unfortunately I lost the feed when esecpn switched the game to esecpnu so I missed the live antics. Who really wants to watch the dodgers and yanquis? Doesn’t the Heidi rule apply here?

It’s like they watched the farce that was the Tenn game last year and said “hold my beer”.
You can’t legislate emotion out of the game.
Caglione could have and should have been tossed early. Should have been warned for bat flip, never was, then even if you give benefit of the doubt when he RAN THROUGH THE BASE PATH INSTEAD OF SIMPLY TAGGING NAWROCKI, he comes back and shoves him, again, in the base bath and re-initiating contact as the aggressor. Boom, gone. They didn’t have the guts to do it. Even if they tossed Nawrocki there too, I would’ve had a problem. How’s he supposed to run bases with a guy 50 pounds heavier standing in his way?
They sacrificed Crighton right in front of the nation for nothing. All that was, was a “we have to do something”, let’s get this kid (after he’s coming back to his team huddle which is routine after a 3rd out). They said nothing about the incidental contact.
And the the strike zone issue made things worse, and to ring up Olenchuck on back to back balls was pathetic. One was borderline the next was ball four.
Then we hit a homerun and they literally steal the momentum by huddling for minutes. What about the speed up rule, why do we need to huddle? If you know what you’re doing throw him out immediately once he did it, but they didn’t because they would’ve been raked over the coals. They targeted our coaching staff instead who called them out on their bs bias.
That crew should never work a game again. Absolute power trip, double standard, ump show, f-ing farce.
Such a good game didn’t have to be impacted by umps. If they had any brains and did their jobs Caglione would’ve been gone which means we would likely be heading to Omaha, but they caved to him. Such a joke.

I don't understand how the UF pitcher wasn't ejected earlierin the game.
Made a tag (could have done so without crossing the baseline), but it was a heat-of-the-moment thing. Then comes back shoving & mouthing off. How did he stay in the game?

I'm sure I've seen worse umpiring. I'm just not sure when.

What has happened to baseball? It’s truly been “sissified”. (Is that a word?)

The egomaniac girly man umpire and crew chief Van Raaphorst at first base had to make the game all about himself. The coward didn’t have the balls to listen to Coach Bakich give him the business, he walked away and left his three henchmen to block Bakich. His body language and facial expressions made him look like he hated Clemson. Not sure if this was obvious on TV, but it sure was at the game. HE caused everything to escalate. It was obvious that he had a big chip on his shoulder. Just like a coward to pick a fight and walk away while someone else defends him. What a sissy! I'm sure his boyfriend was proud of him, and yes, he has a boyfriend.
