All we need look at is the last 13 years. Absolutely no reason whatsoever to think that '23-24 won't be more of the same mediocrity.
These are decently solid players, but no difference-makers, by any stretch.

Exactly. Where do these players put Clemson in the recruiting rankings? Not in the USA Today Top 50. What do other recruiting pundits say?

I saw no other recruiting sources that had Clemson in its top 50. There are, however, 8 or 9 ACC teams in the top 50, including South Carolina in many of them. I realize recruiting is not an exact science, but this class is not going to make the 2023-24 Tigers a powerhouse.

I am no Brownell fan, but I actually do believe these additions will be a difference maker next year, and we will have a solid team that should certainly make the tournament next year.
That being said, we will then lose a ton of talent next year, and will basically have to rebuild. I have no confidence that Brownell will have consistent success, but again next year should be fun.

Now do the math. What does this really accomplish other than possible more time for Brownell. It isn’t gonna win a championship and isn’t gonna build a program.

I think our shooting might improve next year actually. Maybe have a few more options when we get into one of Brownell's patented droughts. Rebounding, on the other hand, might still be a challenge.

I would have thought that with PJ Hall and 5th year Hunter Tyson plus the crew we had, and after going 10-0 to open ACC play, maybe we were sure to get into the NCAAT. Brad let us down again, though. So while I feel like we've signed a decent bunch of guys--and for whom I will be cheering as hard as ever--to expect anything different is a bit of a stretch.

Most of us actually believe that Clemson basketball could be great.
But you and the other apologists are content with average.
These are slightly-above-average players. That's all.
Next year, same mediocre results.
But please, stay disconnected from reality and call us names, if it makes you feel better.

Those of us here who think Brownell is doing a good job feel that way because we understand what a hard job he has to do. We recognize that Clemson basketball is lacking in funding and fan support compared to most other ACC schools as well as many SEC schools. It’s illogical to be mad about a 23 win season or an ACC record well above .500 when both are well above our historical performance and also well above what we should expect given the challenges and limitations in place.
This isn’t complicated.

Because you defend it at every opportunity.
You're right, it's not complicated: Brad has been remarkably average for 13 years.
You're right, it's not complicated: great coaches produce great results.
You're right, it's not complicated: great leaders don't make excuses (or rather, their fanboys don't).
These four guys won't make a difference. They're the same four guys we've had for 13 years. And they're coached by the same coach.
Will you ever stop making excuses and blaming fans? Blame-shifting is a terrible way to go through life.

There is no justifiable reason the team should not have made the NCAAT field this past season. NONE!!!! But they didn't and you and I both know why. It is the exact same reason the teams under CBB have only made three NCAAT appearances over his thirteen year tenure.

The reason we didn't make the NCAAT was that 3 losses to NET 250+ teams indicated that we didn't belong. Getting capped by Morehead St in the NIT completed the proof. I hope these players come in and blend with the existing team and they win every game they play. I just don't foresee that happening under Brad Brownell.

A real Clemson basketball fan wouldn’t use the NIT game to draw conclusions about our entire body of work last year. You wouldn’t do that with the football team’s embarrassing loss to Tennessee, and you shouldn’t do it for our basketball team’s NIT loss either.

Tennessee was a legitimately solid team last year...

and at 11-2 was the 6th ranked team nationally.
Clemson hoops, on the other hand, was a 25 point favorite at home to a Morehead State team that lost to North Alabama, Mercer, UT Martin, SE Missouri State, and Little Rock.
Comparing the two is beyond laughable, but what's even more humerus is that you'd resort to playing the "they didn't really want to be there" card.

Tennessee was missing their two best offensive players, and the Tigers ran almost 100 plays. Statistically speaking, Clemson should have smoked Tennessee. The Judge is right. The Tennessee loss was not a good loss at all. I no more believe that Tennessee is 3 scores better than Clemson than I think Morehead State was a better basketball team this past year. Both losses were disappointing, but Clemson should have beaten both teams, but sadly, they did not. I think this coming 2023-2024 sports year will be even better in both sports. Go Tigers!

Shocking insight - coaching college basketball is a hard job
May 9, 2023, 5:02 PM
[ in reply to No one here is okay with mediocrity. ] |
|
Some are successful with that hard job. Others, like Brownell, are not successful with that hard job. I'm for attracting a coach that can be successful. Brownell underachieves horribly with top 40 recruiting classes (not bad) and salary yet consistently producing 75th range seasons - and that's over these past five seasons. That you interpret that as a 'good job' doesn't speak very highly of your ability to assess talent.

Gosh, I seem to recall Rick Barnes having Clemson ranked #2 in the country at one point. Fans camped out to get tickets. I doubt LJ was as nice as it is now. I also doubt Barnes was paid anywhere near what Brownell is being paid. So much for the arguments about funding and fan support. Fans will support a winning program, not one mired in abject mediocrity. This recruiting class is not in anybody's top 50. And that will show on the court. Particularly with Brownell's stellar coaching.

Again, you have completely fabricated my viewpoints on brownell. It does feel good that the AD, current players, former players, and high level boosters all share a simple par viewpoint to me.

It doesn’t change the fact that Brownlee can not and I repeat CAN NOT get the best out of his players. He has a defensive mind and not an offensive one.
He cant recruit. Thus he has to go to the portal john to get players.
Brownlee sucks as a coach and mediocrity isn’t going to get the team to better places.
If you think its the financial end check FAU and SDSU.
You are crazy if you think anything different.

Dinard and Clark are proven ACC players/starters who are both ranked as 4 stars by 247 for this transfer cycle with Dinard being the #10 PG transfer overall nationally. Leyte and Heidbreder are nice backup options/additions and the incoming freshman, Thomas, is now actually rated a 4 star by ESPN (!) which is kinda exciting imo.

I don't know if you are aware, but players transfer every single year. We will have an opportunity to snag some other great recruits in the portal next year.
Only 2 players on this past years team did not have eligibility left. Brownell signed 1 recruit out of high school. Brownell isn't going to oversign and basically have to cut a player if nobody transfers. Brownell signed heidbreder who was an all conference performer. He is going to redshirt and will then have 2 years of eligibility.
Lastly, brownell knows this is a make or break year. If we don't make the tournament, he will likely be fired. He went with bringing in immediate impact players rather than freshman that will take time to develop.
This isn't rocket science.

Think he realizes he's in a "win or else" situation & this group of players combined w/ the returning players probably gives him best shot at a tourney run for next year (if Hall ends up coming back - which I think he will - definitely gives a bigger bump).
Neff has given him a freebie & for moment, BB has made the best of it in terms of filling out his roster for next year. Whether we get the results on the court will be a different story.

them are one and done as far as Clemson is concerned, right? They are out of eligibility after this year, and will have to be replaced again. Hard to build any continuity when you are replacing key pieces year after year. (Unless you are Kentucky and do it with 5 star one and done NBA freshmen.) I would prefer to build the roster out of high school, as in Hall and Schieff. But, that's just me, I guess.
