Well that was uneventful. I just pray that Dabo has saw this coming and had the people in place that he wanted and we will be fine. I believe we will, but we sure need to pick it up recruiting wise or either in the portal!

Dec 14, 2021, 3:47 PM [ in reply to Saving a ton of $$$ on assistants*** ]

Dabo started Jeff Scott and Tony Elliot out pretty low on the pay scale so he would have some room to pay them more with consideration of their shared positions. When these guys prove to Dabo they earn more than they make Dabo will adjust their pay accordingly.

Some may think that's unfair but if you look back at Dabo's starting pay and look at it now you can see what I mean.

Thankfully, that's now behind us. As much as I was looking/hoping for a 'outsiders' with solid OC and DC experience and credentials, it's hard to argue with Dabo's success at putting a staff together over the years. He probably has a good point that the players will be happy with the route he's taken given their familiarity with the coaches. I do hope to see noticeable improvements in the offensive play calling in the bowl game versus ISU, i.e. fewer RPOs for DJ.

I don't view Streeter as an upgrade, but I also don't think he will be worse than Tony either. For the most part, I think he will perform as well as Tony did.

Arians and Dabo love the new DC and he's in his mid-30s. I don't know, but I feel optimistic that this dude knows defense. Losing BV hurts, but it sounds like we are replacing him with a future coaching star.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Clemson announces new football coaching staff designations

Dec 14, 2021, 3:31 PM

I'm good with it. Ignore these naysayers on here who want to pour water on a staff that's produced and had one "off" year.

Streeter turned Cole Stoudt into a competent QB that beat Oklahoma. That alone impressed me.

Goodwin? If he was good enough for the NFL, I'm cool with it.

This isn't a clueless coach making these decisions. This is Dabo freakin' Swinney. I trust the man to make the right moves. And if they're wrong, he'll correct them. He's shown that in the past.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dec 14, 2021, 3:56 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson announces new football coaching staff designations ]

in that game than Just Brandon's coaching. Chad was also gone. The man has one offense which Cole was never trained to execute. Cole was a pro QB from 8th grade and just couldn't do what Chad lived by.

I attribute Cole's success in that game to Brandon, Tony and mostly to Jeff who managed the passing game. Let me not forget Dabo's selection between passing and running during that game.

Nothing delighted me more than seeing Cole end his football career than such a valiant and successful performance.

Dec 14, 2021, 4:56 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson announces new football coaching staff designations ]

Hahaha, telling you have to go back to Cole Stoudt to find something Streeter actually did. You definitely can't say he did a good job coaching any of the others. Trevor actively became a worse passer under him. Deshaun had to hire a private coach. And how did Bryant, Johnson, Cooper, and Brice do while they were under him?

Also, I'm sick of this Cole Stoudt argument. He had a great game against Oklahoma. He threw for 319 yards and had 3 TDs. What people forget is that Oklahoma was the #120 passing defense in 2014. They allowed 300 yards passing a game. Stoudt did what the average QB did against them, and he did it with Mike Williams, Artavis Scott, Adam Humphries, and Charon Peake, four NFL players, including probably the second best WR Clemson ever had and one of the best tight-ends. I'm still thrilled with Stoudt's performance, but you can't hang your hat on that game, considering the rest of Streeter's body of work.

I know this will upset some people, but it is my opinion. None of these coaches will impress recruits. Their names are not big in the college landscape. We paid 2 million to TE, 2.5 million to BV, which means we had the money to get a big name DC/OC and instead we promote people who outside of Clemson, no one knows. Some people have said that big name coaches had to get their start somewhere. While that is true, it usually is not at a Top 5 program in the country. Heck, Nick even got his start at Kent State. Nick also loses coordinators all the time, but he usually brings in someone who is already known (Kiffin, O'Brian, Locksley, etc). I still feel we should have went after Joe Brady and Jim Leonhard, but whats done is done and I hope Dabo is right this time. Also, Venables was already known in the country as he was a Co-DC for Oklahoma before coming to Clemson.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you bring in an outside coordinator and most of these

Dec 14, 2021, 3:55 PM

coaches won't be around in a year and that new guy is not going to understand how Dabo and Clemson culture work. The culture Dabo has built both external brand and culture within the staff are the most important things to Clemson success. These guys have been trained to do this for years - they are the basis and the product of what he has built. I'm still much more concerned about the poor Roster Management and NIL being reigned in as those are by far our biggest threats. Not who we named as coordinators. These guys are known by the recruits(the ones already in the pipeline) as they have been the ones developing the relationships with those players, families and their HS coaches.

Thats not true, recruits will stay with a coach who is proven over culture. Most these 5 and 4 star recruits want to get with a school who can prepare them for the NFL. Ever wonder why Kansas never gets those type of players? Its because they have nothing to offer.

I used Joe Brady as an example of experience. I just feel that Clemson should have at least interviewed outside coordinators. We are not South Carolina, Duke, Kansas State, we are Clemson. The culture thing is fine but how many 5 stars and 4 stars are we passing up for culture. Joe Brady's name alone would bring in recruits. Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, etc offer 400 recruits a year, Clemson offers 100. Ever wonder why AL, GA, OSU, LSU get all the recruits? Its because they offer everyone knowing they wont get them all. Im getting sick of the culture aspect when its apparent culture idea is becoming a foregone conclusion to winning!

You want a Saban type program that oversigns and culls though players like they are sheep; one that averages hiring 1.2 coordinators each and every year? Lame Kitten was hired for one or two years only to institute some HUNH wide open offense so Saban could recruit more exciting quarterbacks and more top wide receivers.

The most important factor, imho, is that Dabo trained these guys. There is no waste of time getting to know them, it takes no time for them to adjust to anything. In fact, they have been preparing to make changes as Dabo has dictated.

All the hires have been groomed for their positions. These weren't Dabo's second choice, I believe they are his first choice. It wouldn't surprise me to know that Dabo advised Tony and Brent to take HC jobs. Imo, he saw this coming and was more than ready to make the changes.

I never said I wanted a Saban style, but it seems Alabama is winning year after year. Culture means a lot but wins are more important to most fans. Many programs have a great culture but only win 6 games a year. As far as bringing someone from the outside. Yes, I want someone new. A lot of Clemson fans wanted TE fired this year and Brandon Streeter will run the same system, nothing new. While, Goodwin maybe a Defensive genius, he is unproven as a DC. Continue to follow the culture design, recruit only good outstanding people who are christian, did community service, etc and dont get upset when we hit our peek every year of 10-3.

BS was a coordinator before he ever came back to Clemson....he has more coordinating experience than Tony or Jeff Scott themselves had when they were hired. Sure Tony molded him a bit....but that doesn't mean that Brandon will run the same system Tony does. He might actually run one very different and more like he did in his past experience, which was known as being air-raid and led his conference in passing yards and efficiency.

Ok.
My head coaching resume peaked a long time ago at YMCA flag football.
But I have decades of experience in management, so for the Tnetters that see this as "just another business," listen up:

Every time - EVERY. TIME. - I have seen someone brought in to an organization from outside with the hope they will bring in new ideas, new spirit or blood or whatever - it has been a failure.
Did I mention it was EVERY TIME?

If a CEO or division manager brings in an outside hire with the intention of bringing new ideas to a stagnant organization, they are replacing the WRONG GUY.
You want outside ideas? Get an outside top man. Period.

The only way this works is if the top dude (or dudette) has some vision or new concepts but needs to bring in someone who has better expertise in implementing those ideas. See the difference?
Trying to do it the other way around is going to fail.
So please stop with the "big name" "credentialed" "outside" stuff now.

PS in the history of football since Walter Camp there have probably been about six really new ideas. A little perspective, please.

Re: TNET: Clemson announces new football coaching staff designations

Dec 14, 2021, 5:36 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clemson announces new football coaching staff designations ]

I actually guessed at ten at first, then thought that was too many because:
(1) Forward pass IS Walter Camp, we can't count it (although it wasn't actually legal then)
(2) Wishbone and the associated options I would count as one idea
(3) Power I, Spread & Wildcat are riffs on the Single Wing (although they each have their own unique strengths)
(4) Motion would technically be a de-innovation. It existed before the rules to limit it were written.
etc

So it just depends on how you want to define things.
I'll grant that there are a lot of innovative ideas in football if you count every single wrinkle.

I was thinking more about things that get you totally left behind (for a while) if you don't react, like the west coast offense, the whole family of option football, the single wing, and maybe DB blitzes.

A lot of the smaller innovations are really only effective for a season or two until everyone else figures out what you're doing, even if they don't do it themselves. I would put the variations of screen passes in that category.

I am eager to see what Dabo has been scheming at for years while his staff was so stable. I doubt that he didn't at least consider some outside folks along the way. Given who's available, who fits, and the phase of the moon at the moment, I don't have any serious gripes with the lineup.
