Great story David. Well done. Val is definitely the greatest athlete in Clemson Womens Sports history. No question. Someday down the road, maybe it will be possible to do a story on what actually happened to her in 2024. We really would like to know. Was it mental issues, physical ailments, team chemistry? Would really like to know because sometimes Val was like the kid sister you just wanted to hug and tell her it would be fine. Sure would like to know what the real story is.

Maybe Cagle will get married, have a daughter that she can coach up to be better than she was and send her to Clemson where her momma's picture will be on the wall as a Clemson softball Hall of Famer!!!

Picture on the wall??? Heck, her statue will be at the entrance to the stadium. Val is a very, very special young lady that will go far in whatever she pursues.

Great article. That was good. For a minute I thought it was going to be about those Iranian leaders. This was much better. Well done.

She definitely deserves to have her # retired and put on the fence. A living legend.

As we learned with football number 4, never retire the number. Retire the jersey and use the number to recruit others to fill those shoes.

I can agree with you jstone D329.
Here is some history
There was an issue when Tommy West was coach and the recruiting of Anthony Downs. It was stated that Downs could have #4 and that jersey's are retired, not numbers. This didn't sit well with Steve Fuller. Long story short Anthony Downs left and never wore 4.
Later on there was an agreement between Fuller and Clemson to allow Watson to wear the number. The patch on Watson's jersey I thought looked gaudy. If the patch wasn't there it would have been great.
As long as Cagle and Clemson are okay with it, I'm all for it.
In my opinion, Ring of Honor and number (along with jersey) get retired. Both Clemson and Valerie mutually agree to let a future player wear the number if it calls for it.
On another note, I didn't get a notification that you tagged me in your reply.

I can’t speak to your notification issue. Why retire a number and still use it? If it is retired then it should be done. Retire the jersey and use the number as I originally stated which serves the same purpose but honors the meaning of the word. Not sure if they have a process for listing players ( like they do for HOF and ROH) in the stadium but if so it should be followed.

I would love to see Cagle Field added to McWhorter Stadium. I know she would have broken 72 home runs and 72 wins if she had stayed healthy this year. I’m sure she will go to Athletes Unlimited and break the seven figure ceiling easily. Sad to see her go. It’s like losing a Watson or Lawrence.

I entered Clemson University in the fall of 1971. I have seen great players at this university in each and every sport we field. Banks McFadden was still on campus at that time heading up the intramural sports program.
In all my years as a Clemson Tiger, there has never been a better athlete on any of our sports teams than Valerie Cagle. Some may be equal, but none are better!
I am always amazed when we get someone of her caliber to come to Clemson. . . but then, I remind myself that Clemson sells itself. And that student athlete can be congratulated for seeing it.
I will miss her, and all of the seniors moving on this year. They have provided many a memory and much satisfaction to this old Tiger. Nonetheless, I am excited for next year and what it may bring!!
As always,Go, Tigers!

Nice story David. We will sure miss watching Valerie and the seniors play. Best wishes to the seniors in their future endeavors. Also I hope one day we will what happened to Valerie. Seems like something was a little bit off with her pitching and hitting late in the season.

Great article David! IMHO Valerie is the best athlete in any sport since I was started as a student in 1977, but also this is one heck of a good senior class. Most came when we didn't even have a team and I thank them for buying into what we could be and delivering good teams from the start. Thanks to them all, a fun bunch to watch.
