I have mentioned this before but from a friend I know with a little more access than myself once told me that the players love Dabo’s loyalty when it came to the transfer portal.
Thanks for sharing!

I respect Dabo's policy but at times it sure puts us between a rock and a hard place.

I really believe this is part of the reason we see more guys coming back for a 5th or during Covid, even 6th, year more than most other programs.

Come back/leave, loyal/not loyal, regardless of what fits their speech when asked, do your job and do it well or I would find and put somebody else in your place, and that would be the bottom line. When these guys are invited to come and join a program like Dabo has put in place at Clemson, your job is to match the play of the guy standing next to you, and if and when someone doesn't feel that same way, it's time for that guy to be replaced with any means possible with next man up, or the transfer portal. Loyalty also means you have to do your job to the best of your ability, or you have interrupted the loyalty we had for each other....

Who defines 'to the best of one's abilities'?

How does one feel to deliver to the abilities you possess...and still fall short? Is there no room for 'the other guy is better'?

If you recruit a guy and he turns out “best of his ability” is not as good as you thought, whose fault is that? The coaches evaluated him and recruited him.
Also, how do you know it isn’t a problem with the coaches being able to develop a guy?
At the end of the day, you sought him and offered and signed him. He gives his all. He turns out not to be as good as you want. That is on YOU for recruiting him or for not developing him. He did his part! Now own YOURS! That is what Swinney commits to them on. And frankly, he should.
It is a cop out to throw a guy away because YOU made a mistake!

why can these fools not count scholarships? Swinney got criticized up and down for not taking transfers, meanwhile he was trying to figure out how to get down to 85 lol

Are you surprised that the numbers worked out fine?
As if some older lower string players who didn’t play much or play well in the Spring were too dense to figure out that their playing time future at Clemson would be very infrequent?
Lesson # 20,000 as why our smart coaches know much more about running and coaching a football team than the sports writers radio hosts, and bloggers do.

Granted, it's a policy that's appreciated by our current players, but if we continue to be beaten by schools that actively use the portal effectively, the policy may become hard to sustain.

I’m going to be in the minority here, I know. But if ya ain’t got it, ya ain’t got it. This is high level college football. Not everyone deserves a participation trophy. If you can bring in a player who is no doubt better than who ya got - over someone who maybe just ain’t got it and is a weak link in the chain - then that’s just how it works. No hard feelings. My .02.

Not having good players is a coaching failure not portal

Issue.
Either recruit better or develop better. Otherwise why recruit ever and just do everything via the portal?

A precondition for depending upon the portal to create sustained excellence requires a NIL program that far exceeds Clemson’s financial position.
Being a program that keeps great players is more important than buying great players by the portal; at least this is the case but for a handful of super rich programs that also have a tremendous recent past of W-L seasons.
Clemson fits category 2, but not category 1.
It’s just reality, which ain’t too bad when when thinking about it.

Dabo’s stance on the portal keeps some of them safe from the bench.

I have no problem with taking a few players in the portal but some of these teams are getting half their starters from the portal and it's sad.

I respect how Dabo does not use the portal much at all. He values the hard work the players put into the process and rewards them accordingly. And Congress is getting involved because they see how the transfer portal is eroding college football. I'm not big on Government getting in your business but I think this time it makes sense so the great traditions of college football can continue. Soon they will be putting in place guidelines that will limit the use of the transfer portal. The major one being when a recruit commits to a college, they will have to be there 3 years before they will be eligible to transfer to another college to continue their football career much like college baseball is today. Congress is also talking about guidelines for medical insurance for the players. In other words, College football is a business and the player is the employee and the institution is the employer. Just think if the NFL allowed players to transfer when they wanted to which they can't because they signed a contract. It would be total chaos which is what is going on with college football right now. Bottomline: You sign a contract with a college to pay for your education so you should honor that contract. The argument here is they don't sign a 4 year contract and the scholarship can be taken away at any time by the university so I would hope that Congress will institute guidelines in which the institution and the player has to honor a minimum 3 year contract. Of course in certain circumstances, the employee (the institution), or the employer (the player) should be able to void the contract.
In the mean time, GO TIGERS!

It’s always good for us to remember the “purpose” of our football program, according to Coach Swinney.
Our program exists to help boys become productive and successful young men, and football is the mechanism he uses to do that. We, as fans, think about national titles and football revenue, which Dabo is in tune with also. However, he always keeps his focus on “the why”.
While he may not always share his inner thoughts with us on the transfer portal, he sees a place for it, as long as it supports the purpose of the program. Replacing a young man that has busted his butt for 4 years with a “plug and play” from the transfer portal may help win some games (maybe), but what message does that send to the one that “worked for it?” Now, if the talent gap is overwhelming, that’s different.
It is very difficult to always keep your eye on “the why”. However, I think Dabo’s limited use of the transfer portal supports the intent of his program very well.
Some fans might be happy to swap our culture with Georgia for a couple of national championships. Not me. Keep doing what you’re doing Coach Swinney, and thank you for building a program I’m very proud to support.
