David you may want to change Paul Journey to Paw Journey

This is consistent with Dabo’s philosophy so no big surprise here. I wonder if the plan all along was not to use the portal this year even though it could have helped or if they tried but couldn’t land anyone that fit our profile, so now they are just focusing on recruiting exclusively now?

I figured in the long run this was going to be the approach, but curious if they didn’t try to dabble in the portal initially this year and just had no success because I’m pretty sure Matt probably told Dabo in order to turn things around quicker, we may want to grab a guy or two from portal just this year to bridge the gap faster.

Clemson dabbled, but didn't succeed. The will and money are not there and may never be. The schools with money will use the portal more like OSU and Texas, FSU, etc. It's not a guarantee in the portal, but neither is HS recruiting. Dabo needs to win more for the program to remain relevant. Multi loss seasons will hurt HS recruiting as will losses on national TV to UGA and FSU. 2024 needs to be a break thru year.

Why does everyone say FSU has money. They don’t bring in the top tier transfers. They whine constantly about being broke. Lets see how they play out everyone talks about how they were last year. They made a quick turnaround no doubt but they were NOT elite even when Travis was playing.

Don't bring in top tier transfers? I guess that's why 4 of the transfers from 2023 are being drafted high in the NFL draft. Higher than some of ours.

And yes, fsu is elite. They're a national brand.

Are they just that much bigger than us (undergrad numbers)? Tallahassee isn’t a big wealthy city and there are tons of other high profile universities in Florida. I’m getting the feeling they have TAM money, but I don’t think that’s the case. Does anyone have any information regarding this façade of NIL money they have? @bbretfsu® ?

I'll try and answer.

FSU has a very effective NIL. The group is called The Battle's End. (taken from a line in the fight song - For FSU is on the warpath now, and at the battle's end she's great!)

It has money, but not near the money of aTm, SoCal, Oregon, TN, UGA, etc. It is run by an FSU alum who has a business background. There priorties are, in order - 1. Retention (keeping current players at FSU, not leaving through the portal or staying one more year instead of going to NFL.) 2. Transfer Portal (Paying players "fair market value" but not getting into bidding wars with other schools. 3. High School kids (once again, not getting into bidding wars, and educating the kids that financial opportunities will be available AFTER they prove themselves on the field.)

Couple of examples of their philosophy.
1. Did not enter the bidding war for Trevor Etienne. It was clear that UF, TN and UGA were the players and he was going to the highest bidder.
2. Cam Ward - He was Norvell's first choice (over DJU) at QB. Rumors are he was asking 1.5 million bucks. Battle's End told him they weren't gonna pay that. Miami, allegedly, did. (FSU signed DJ instead. Rumors are he got 800-900K.)

Retention: The primary reason FSU was so successful this year was because there were several players who were eligible for the NFL an probably would have been mid-round draft picks if they had left (Jordan Travis, Trey Benson and Johnny Wilson are the three most notable). Jared Verse would have probably been a late first round, early second round pick. Battle's End convinced them that staying at FSU for the 2023 season would be a better deal for them long term.

Portal successes: Far more a result of good vetting and good luck than getting the best guys in the portal. Jared Verse, Braden Fisk were considered solid guys, but far exceeded their expectations once they got on campus. (Verse came from Albany. Fiske from Western Michigan.) Johnny Wilson caught 3 passes at AZ State. Trey Benson was injured and had virtually no stats at Oregon. In two years DJU is the biggest name transfer portal guy FSU has got, and he was ranked about the 8-10 best QB in the portal.

I could go on and on about specifics, but I doubt folks are that interested.

But, bottom line is FSU has a good NIL. But, it is nowhere near rich enough to make up for the deficit of money being in ACC vs SEC gives us. And, it doesn't have near the rich fan base that schools like TX and others have.

The way he is recruiting OL right now, he won't need to use the portal. We are at 4 OL for 2025 with 2-3 more out there? He snagged one for 2024. I think he got his bump up from 15 OL on scholarship for his position group.

The future is very bright if he can toughen up the big nasties.

Exactly, we thought 2000 was going to be our can't miss, best ever class. Same with 21. They didn't stick. So our adjusted class was not good.

There you have it. A multi-year rebuild of the OL. Clemson can't buy the best players, so its HS recruiting. That takes time and the success rate varies as 60% is good. The UGA game will be the Clemson program's test. A bad loss will end the program's CFP hopes and national profile as top 20. The elite narrative ended years ago.

That shameful bad loss to Duke football in the opener last year pretty much dropped the mic on Clemson being elite. It's already done.

12 team playoff. At least 5 of those teams can get smoked by UGA if they have bad games. 12 team playoffs changes the you are out if you have a bad loss. We still get in even if we have 2 losses and win ACC.

Coach Luke has a proven resume of developing good OLineman, I just hope he can perform a miracle with the current group of tomato cans Clemson has before August 31st, so Cade doesn't get thrown around like a pit bull on a rag doll.

Sorry for hurting your little feelings but it is what it is. The Oline performance last year was terrible. If Coach Luke can make this current group serviceable it would truly be a miracle. As I have said before...August 31 will be the test.

I'm glad Matt Luke is now a Clemson Tiger! He seems to have the perfect balance between recruiting high school players and going to the portal when he sees someone who can add to the team.

Building through recruiting is the long term best way, but it takes time for the OL to develop unless he's a Tony Boselli which are very rare.
