I have to laugh, because Coach Scott is just like the rest if us: he says it's unfair to compare TL to Deshaun, then he turns around and DOES IT ANYWAY.
Now, he kept it light, and he made it positive.
But let this observation help all the conversation-stiflers out there: even the coaches make comparisons. And frankly, i think they do it more than we do.

Lmao... He says it's an unfair comparison... Then immediately goes on to say he saw the same thing at times in the spring in Trevor that he saw in Watson with the game looking slow to him. It's only unfair because he's only had a spring and hasn't played in a game... But it's no different than people being excited for Watson when he arrived. The only thing that toned that down on DW4 was Watson came out of the spring injured in his shoulder. Trevor didn't and enters the fall as the #2 guy at 100%.

He knows it is not best for us to get too carried away with those comparisons right now. He may think it, but I don't think he wants that for TL right now. What's the upside?

Must have missed the irony...he says it's unfair to compare...then next thing he does, is compare them.

How could that be when we have heard it from Dabo, Jeff, and Tony Elliot that Trevor was further along than DW4 was at this point and time in their early careers. Am I mistaken, was it or wasn't it said that TL was ahead of DW4 at this point when they were ask?

I think he just wants to tone the hype down to make things go smoother for TL and the entire situation.

Could be, and I would agree if that is his motive but, they should remember the fire storm that they them selves create when bragging about who they have signed. IMO when they make statements that this or that recruit is farther along than a prior all American player was, that is what leads fans to believing if that is so, they should be the early starter!!!

Yes they have all said it, even as a recruit they alluded to it and then said leading into the spring game that he was more physically developed than DW4 as well as mentally. I get the feeling the coaches know and if they’re correct in saying they want to improve tempo and downfield passing he’ll play.
I totally agree with Carlsbad, no upside in hyping it even more. Sounds like to me from Dabo’s interview with Vandervort (didn’t say when the interview was done) he was setting the tone for KB to be the starter.

Absolutely, and when the coaches believe that a player needs a pat on the back bc of their progress in the system, they should do it out of the hearing of the media, fans also in most cases bc, fans love bragging about what they have heard their coaches say, with some even taking it a bit further than what they have actually heard the coach say!!! That even causes the players to feel like they have to make a stand for the guy that has been leading their team prior to the new guy coming in!!!! If TL actually lights it up a couple of times in a couple of different games when their older leader seems to be getting the team bogged down, on their own they will start calling for the new guy to get his chance....

It's unfair because Trevor is clearly better.

In fact, in the recent rankings of the best QBs to ever play the game at any level, Trevor Lawrence was ranked #1 ahead of all-time greats like DW4, Joe Montana, Tom Brady and Charlie Whitehurst.

Ok. I get DW4 and Whitehurst in the list of all time great college / pro QBs, maybe along with Dantzler, Fuller, Williams, Streeter, Epply, etc, but I don't remember a Montana or Brady playing QB here. Maybe they were before my time.

The rankings that I referenced were not only Clemson QBs

It was a ranking of the best QBs to ever play the game at any level (from pop warner all the way through the pros). I was merely pointing out all of the all-time greats that Trevor Lawrence was ranked ahead of. Hth.

Post is wrong on so many levels.
Brady and Montana weren't highly ranked in high school and Whitehurst doesn't belong in the same sentence with any of those guys.

All the media talk and praises mean nothing until Trevor has actually beat KB out for the job, and not a soul will know the answer to all of the questioning of who should be our QB until it has been proven on the field against really good teams with better than just a pulse!!!

"The biggest thing from last year was consistency overall,

especially in the downfield passing game. One thing we really cut our teeth on here at Clemson is a lot of explosive plays downfield. That was lacking at times and was inconsistent. So that was a big area of focus going into spring and summer."
I know they've implied as much before, but there it is. The reason I mention it is because even though I felt it was obvious to all, some folks pointed to stats and said the downfield game was excellent (Walt Deptula comes to mind).

Excellent point. Yet about every week or so we’ll get a post that the stats weren’t bad from last year. Dabo hinted in his interview that it was planned...

Unfair to Watson if you read Dabo's statements
Jul 31, 2018, 6:46 PM
|
|
DW4, The Clemson G.O.A.T. and soon-to-be NFL MVP, was 180 lbs and all bones when he arrived in Tigertown. By comparison, TL16 is a strapping 215+ with big guns. Reference Dabo's statements on TL16 shortly after his selection of Clemson:
What Dabo Swinney revealed about Trevor Lawrence and Clemson’s 2018 QB battle By Matt Connolly
December 20, 2017 12:50 PM
CLEMSON
Kelly Bryant has led Clemson to the No. 1 spot in the College Football Playoff and is undefeated in games that he has started and finished.
But Bryant will have plenty of competition for the starting quarterback job in 2018, including the No. 1 prospect in the country: Trevor Lawrence.
Lawrence signed with Clemson on Wednesday and is the biggest piece of the Tigers’ star-studded recruiting class. He is the first No. 1 overall recruit to sign with Clemson and it appears that he will be a part of the quarterback battle as soon as he arrives on campus.
“He’s got everything that you look for, you could possibly want. He’s just been a natural from Day 1, all the way from the ninth grade on,” Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said. “He’s got unbelievable arm talent. That’s pretty easy to see when you watch him, but I think he’s just a very poised guy that is a great competitor… He’s been a great leader for his program. He’s a very good student, and just a guy that I think knows what he wants and is willing to work for it.”
Lawrence has drawn comparisons to Deshaun Watson after breaking Watson’s career passing yards and touchdowns records for the state of Georgia.
Swinney said that Lawrence at 6-foot-6, 210 pounds is further along physically than Watson at this stage. Watson arrived at Clemson weighing about 180 pounds.
“He’s just so physically developed for a young guy. Deshaun was obviously pretty special coming out of Georgia… He’s just way ahead of Deshaun from a physical standpoint,” Swinney said. “We’ll see where he is mentally and how he transitions and all that once he gets here and we start coaching. I don’t think that you really know that until you start coaching a guy, but he’s been well prepared, well groomed.”
In addition to Bryant and Lawrence, Clemson also has freshman Hunter Johnson, redshirt freshman Zerrick Cooper and freshman Chase Brice on its roster.
Johnson and Cooper have split time as the backup quarterback this season, while Brice is redshirting. Swinney expects the quarterback battle to work itself out and everyone will get an opportunity to compete for the starting job.
“We’ve got good players here. They all understand competition. Trevor committed last December and has been one of the most low maintenance recruits I’ve ever been around… He’s known what he wants to do, and he’s excited about having an opportunity to come in here and compete,” Swinney said. “My job is to go recruit the best players that I can recruit for Clemson University, and then when they get here challenge them, grow them, mature them, develop them into being the best version of themselves. Competition is going to bring out the best in every one, and at the end of the day somebody’s going to win the job. You’re going to have starters. You’re going to have backups. And that’s life. That’s the way it is. So we have a process in place. You go through it and let the chips fall where they may.”

So my friend coaches at an upstate high school. They went on a visit this spring. Quote from Jeff Scott: “Let’s eat some lunch. Afterwards, we will take you out and let you meet the greatest QB to ever walk these hills.”
