This has driven me crazy the last couple of years.

I used to read that and it was like, "OH YEAH - Tigers are gonna open it up this week!"

Since the Ohio State game I've been like....define "good practice" because this gameday product seems to contradict that some.

Granted, they are teens and early 20s humans - not robots but it's been hard to get a good read on this team for a while it seems like (at least from a fan's perspective).

I dont understand how the fall-off from last year has been so drastic! I know we lost some great players but isnt our recruiting classes some of the best in the nation? I understand we lose guys to eligibility and injury but if those 4 and 5 stars are what they are where is the fall-off? We look like a team that has zero confidence on the offense! The Defense has played above their head but dropped passes, awful reads, throws and decision making has been out in front since game 1! The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting a different result. Not this year!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our offense was boom or bust the past 2 yrs though

Oct 24, 2021, 3:53 PM

Really bland and no design. It was up to Trevor or ETN to dig us out of trouble in multiple games. Had Cornell Powell not showed out last year we may have lost more games. The win over OSu in the CFP was won bc of the 75 yard run on a busted play by Trevor and the pop pass to ETN late to cap it, not to mention 2 dropped TDs by OSUs Running Back. I really think if Dabo got a real grinder of an OC next year we will get right back to taking the ACC again and beyond. But he sticks with Elliot and the OL coach then it’ll be another inconsistent yr.

Re: Including his?***

Oct 24, 2021, 6:55 PM [ in reply to Re: Including his?*** ]

Simply having highly rated recruiting classes does not guarantee that every highly recruited player will pan out.

Last year's WR's (despite J.Ross's absence) benefitted from experienced and proven WR's and the highly effective experience (and pass catching performance) from T.Etienne.

This year's WR Corp has a highly recruited new WR who drops nearly everything (and his occasional catches are often bobbled before he finally quits playing with the football).

Although DJ still has much to improve upon, the OL and DJ have gotten better (despite DJ's horrific pick-6 on the shovel pass). But the WR Corp (except for Ross) and the pass catching of the RBs have been too inconsistent for us to expect a win any longer.

Elliott says every job is open, does that include play calling?

Oct 24, 2021, 12:16 PM

There’s two blaring positions that need an up grade. Offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Since Jeff Scott left, we have had two embarrassing losses in the playoffs with the same quarterback that blew Alabama out . Now without Trevor we can’t score 21 points. It’s obvious that the offense is garbage. Change needs to happen. I understand that Dabo has earned a little latitude. But I have worked for 26 years in a profession, I’ve had a lot of success. But if my work went this far south in one year. They would have a sit down with me, tell me to turn it around. Or the next step is a pink slip.
Being the head coach, Crap rolls down hill. Find the one it hits. This season is make people like finebalm right about our program. Because I’m a Clemson fan. I’m not a fan of a coach or player, they come and go. I expect coaches and players to make Clemson better. Stronger. I love Dabo, I’m happy to have a Man like him as head coach. But Dabo is not bigger than Clemson. When Danny Ford left it was a shock. But I didn’t start pulling for Arkansas when he ended up there.
GO TIGERS!!!!!

Neither the LSU or OSU playoff losses were due to the

Oct 24, 2021, 2:17 PM

offense or playcalling.

We had 400 yards or more in each of those games. The problem was both LSU and OSU had 650 yards. Joe Burrow threw for 400 yards and 5 TDs and Edwards-Hellaire added another TD wit 120 yards on just 16 carries. Justin Fields threw for 400 yards and 6TDs while completing nearly 80% of his passes. They added another 250 yards and a TD on the ground.

We didn't lost either of those games due to the offense. Giving up 650 yards and 5 or 6 passing TDs along with running the ball at will is what got us beat.

Wanna know when the best passing season on Clemson history was? 2020. Our rushing game fell off by 1,000 yards, but that can't be blamed on Jeff Scott's departure because he wasn't a running game coordinator. In fact, he didn't call plays. His job was to coach the WRs while giving ideas. Again, we had the best passing offense in Clemson history the first year after Jeff left,, and we've had top 10 offenses in each of the last 3 years. They were even better than the Deshaun Watson years.

Tony Elliott has been the primary playcaller since 2015. In those 6 years we've been to 6 straight playoffs, 4 national championship games, and won two national titles. We've won more playoff game than anyone except Alabama. There is only one team better than Clemson in the playoff era, and that is because we've had the most consistent offense and playcaller in the era.

We are struggling now not because of play calling. Its because we're struggling at several positions to execute that offense. The same QB we have now set a Death Valley record for the largest comeback in program history, and he also set the record for most opponent passing yards in the storied history of Notre Dame. In 2 games and mop up duty, he completed 67% of his passes for 914 yards and 3 TDs with 0 INTs. It took him 6 games this year to finally surpass his yardage total from last year, and he's only completing 55%. He has 4 TDs with 5 INTs, including 2 for opponent TDs. So obviously he is not playing up to his potential and frankly he's the biggest reason we're struggling on offense. He continues to suffer from accuracy and bad decisions, and it certainly doesn't help that we've had a mash unit on the OL and receivers have dropped 13 passes over last 3 games.

Simply put, if we have Trevor or last year's DJ running Elliott's offense then we may very well be undefeated. That is, we are struggling because execution has been horrendous. There is no offense or playcalls you can run when the QB, OL, and receivers aren't able to execute the basics.

So no.. we didn't lose our last two playoff games and we haven't struggled this year due the same playcalling that has led us to the greatest heights in the history of our program.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes they were

Oct 24, 2021, 6:47 PM

Anyone with a functional brain knew in order to beat LSU we’d need to score and score and score. No one stopped them all year and they were prone to give up some points themselves. We managed to stop them enough to get up 10 and then were unable to counter when they made adjustments to what we were doing on D and what we were doing on O. This loss was squarely on the offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not even close to being correct.

Oct 24, 2021, 11:50 PM

When you get 400~450 yards you should be able to win.

When you allow 1,300 yards and 14 TDs in two games you're going to lose.

national title rings and more rings than I can fit on my two hands. I am one of the primary reasons for the (by far) greatest era in Clemson history. I called plays for the best passing offense in Clemson history (2020), and I haven't forgotten how to call plays. Unfortunately my offense has forgotten how to execute them. I have given much of my life to Clemson University, and I am working my tail off to correct the execution issues"

It’s so funny that you defend the same person who is inept as you are. Look DEEPER into the ost few years and you’ll see that it was TALENT that got us where we went. Not TE play calling. Go back and look at a MAJORITY of our games with DW and TL. THEY were given the keys and authority to change plays how they see fit. If you would pay attention to reality instead of stats/numbers you would know THEY ran the offense. Not Elliot. There’s a good reason your pulse is so low.

Re: "Hi My name Is Tony Elliott, and I have two

Oct 24, 2021, 5:59 PM

It’s never as simple as blame the OC. He has a lot of blame to own but our players are not executing this year like years past. I’m not saying TE needs to stay. A change might be best for the program. But if he’s fired whoever comes in has to get our guys to execute.

A lot of people feel like Dabo will not make the difficult decision. I think he will at the end of the season. No need to fire coordinators now.

Dear Blizzake1979,

Glad that you enjoyed the D.Ford years ... outside of C.Pell's successful cup of coffee as our FB coach, D.Ford brought big time football to Clemson.

As for T.Elliott getting the blame for losses as a bad play caller, I'll try to support you:

W.Shipley drops TD pass on wide-open route ... sure looks like bad play-calling by T.Elliott.

DJ tosses easy shovel-pass into Pitt defender's belly for pick-6 ... T.Elliott gets the blame for DJ's lack of situational awareness (which is not a reflection on overall intelligence ... bad drivers can be smart people who also lack situational awareness).

B.Collins / B.Galloway / A.Ajou drop passes on open routes (where DJ throws it right) ... that dang T.Elliott deserves the blame there, also.

DJ's all-to-common errant passes (sometimes I think that DJ could overthrow Vladimir Putin) ... undoubtedly T.Elliott has coached DJ to overthrow open receivers (who get open because they run the routes that the O.Coordinator puts in the plays.

So yes, it's all T.Elliott's fault.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: "Hi My name Is Tony Elliott, and I have two

Oct 24, 2021, 7:17 PM

Execution has been a huge problem all year. Is it all TE fault? Of course not. But does he continuously put our players in positions to be consistently successful? Absolutely not. There’s enough blame to go around as far as the staff is concerned, but enough is enough.

While play calling was “better” to an extent yesterday, we never did go back to what had a opportunity to work. Just because a “good” play isn’t executed, it shouldn’t stop totem from trying again. I mean he!!, that’s all we do is rinse and repeat. So why not rinse and repeat with plays that work?

I’ll leave that to the coaches to figure out but as we can all see, there isn’t much being figured out regardless of how bad it is. At least from where I’m sitting.

Inept? Lol.

Oct 24, 2021, 11:58 PM [ in reply to Re: "Hi My name Is Tony Elliott, and I have two ]

Inept is making a post like you did.

Our offense hasn't ventured outside the top 10 the previous 3 seasons. They were better than either of the Deshaun Watson years. We had the best passing offense in program history last year. We've been to 6 straight playoffs, 4 national title games, we've won two national titles, and we've won more playoff games than anyone except Alabama, and we're the 2nd best team in the era.

We have nowhere near the 2nd best allotment of talent over those years. If teams can win without coaches, then based on talent there are several teams who should've been better than us.

It's asinine to suggest we've won simply because we've had some good players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Learning curve? There has not been one single bit of

Oct 24, 2021, 2:02 PM

improvement since the season started vs Georgia. So ok, our offense simply wasn't ready for the start of the season. Not just not ready for Georgia, but not ready for any defense at the FBS level. But what is amazing is there has not been one single ounce of improvement in 8 weeks. You would think by simply playing 7 games and practicing that there would be some improvement. None, zilch, nada, in fact they may have gotten worse. That's a long learning curve.

I'll bet a real offensive coordinator could take the top-10 recruiting class talents we have and create a great offense. Look at what the coach at Tennessee has done in year one with a decimated roster. With our elite defense, had we had just a bad offense or average offense, we'd be in contention for conference and national titles. But we have a historically worse than bad offense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Learning curve? There has not been one single bit of

Oct 24, 2021, 7:17 PM

Dear Clemson81to85,

Perhaps you are aware that high recruiting class ratings do not guarantee that each recruited player will be a star.

Clemson's 2021 class hit the jackpot with OL ... but most OL players take two years to really start playing well. (Marcus Tate is one of those rare exceptions ... after a shaky first 3 games, he is really starting to look good.)

Clemson's 2021 class has had some misses with WR ... one of those highly rated WR recruits couldn't catch COVID if he were in a NY State rest home. But he was highly recruited and has a NIL deal.

DJ is clearly not the 'ready to go' QB that we enjoyed with both D.Watson and T.Lawrence. Instead of winning instantly, each game is in the balance as DJ develops as a QB. But to say that DJ hasn't improved overall (and of course I witnessed his horrific lack of situational awareness during his shovel-pass pick-6) is simply not true. DJ didn't run or throw to check downs or know how to take a snap from under center at start of season. He does all of those with a modest degree of competence now. His overthrows remain troublesome (which is more of a repetition issue than a 'knowledge' issue). But DJ has not gotten worse, he is actually getting better. But he is clearly not 'there yet' as a QB which can lead us to victory through his own play by himself.

Tony Elliott has run out of excuses. Clemson’s offense has now
been downgraded to the level of mediocrity in a mediocre conference.
Nothing left but for Dabo to be a real leader ...identify the problem...
and fix it. Suggestion: Go hire WILLIE KORN ..he will bring his
assistants with him...ie. CLEAN OFFENSIVE COACHING SIDE.
Then, Dabo, the fans will know you are serious about fixing a bad problem.
It is NOT the players fault and the FANS deserve more!

Re: TNET: Elliott says every job is open, as learning curve continues to show on offense

Oct 24, 2021, 6:06 PM

You can’t say it’s not the players fault. Our WRs refuse to block and drop passes. Our OL is missing assignments. Do you think they aren’t coached. Of course they are. Our players are not performing. Could the offensive play calling improve. YES but again the players have to execute.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Regardless, it’s still on the coaches.

Oct 25, 2021, 1:13 AM

It’s not like we are a lousy program that can’t recruit and are trying to compete against teams with superior talent and history.

We are the ones who have the supreme talent, and we are losing to inferior competition. We are the ones with the pedigree. Our coaches literally have everything they could possibly want and need to be successful.

This year shouldn’t be happening. Period.
