Well…..I’ll go ahead and state the obvious that I think most of us already know ……the “pink elephant” in the room has to go……PERIOD!!!!!!
WG needs to go and I don’t care where it is as long as it’s not on our sideline!!!!!
The Defense has had plenty of talent and still does but the things that you printed out David have been glaring unexplainable gaffs for a few years now.
It’s not getting better…..oh no, only worst 😩. Our guys look lost, out of step, out of place and way too many bad angles…..geez!!!!!
Tackling has become atrocious as we look like grade schoolers out there on the field running around at recess…..🤬😡🤬.
If he stays…..next Season will be a bust as well….!!!!!!
Go Tigers…!!!🏈🏈🏈
Go Wes……yes just get the hell outta here!!!!!

We definitely had our chances. I called it early…..on our second drive of the game when we punted the ball….they drove the field and scored to go up
14-7. I was yelling “go for it”!!!!!
Then the turnover and they score again…now it’s 21-7. Told the guys I was sitting with that the punters the turning point of that game….and it was.
If We had that “nothing to lose” mentality….we go for it, keep the momentum going, score and keep on trucking. If we didn’t make it, it wohsve mattered because it was obvious from the beginning that our Defense wasn’t going to stop them….so it didn’t matter if we turned it over on downs from or punted……they were gonna score regardless. But since we chickened out and punted…..we will never know what that possible 1st would have provided…….🤬

I agree and thought the same, a 14-0 or 10-0 lead there although its only one more score is usually big for clemson, but going down 21-7 was just playing catch up rest of the game, also agree about nothing to lose mentality.

Re: TNET: Early Thoughts from Austin: The future is bright, but defense has to improve

Dec 24, 2024, 7:46 AM

Actually, in double-hindsight (is there such an expression?), Clemson did adjust the defense effectively in the second half.

Despite TX receiving the KO to start the 2nd half, they scored half as much in the second half as they did in the first half. Thus, in double hindsight our coaches were in the process of ma,ing the adjustments on defense before halftime. Those changes weren’t solidified / proven until the 2nd half.

Who knew that the already dubiously skilled A.Swanson’s punting would descend to an all-time low against TX? None of either of the fans nor the coaches would have predicted such a comprehensively awful performance from him. Sure, we’re all accustomed to him whiffing on a punt or two each game. But we knew that bad field position would create near certainty that TX would score, and that our OL was minimally capable of reliable run blocking success against TX’s defensive front. At the time, I thought it was a mistake to not go for it. In hindsight, because our passing offense turned out to be incredibly potent (considering TX’s nation’s best pass defense), I understand why we punted in that situation.

Defense used to be the pride and joy of our Tigers! Never thought I’d live to see the day that it became a season long liability! Man, I miss Brent Venables! Guys were rarely put of position when he was here. Now it’s like our men don’t even know what a run fit is. We also need to be blitzing more; that was Venables’ specialty. I rarely see those perfectly timed blitzes from Badwin. Ol’ Wes needs to go. Offense did more than enough to win the game vs. Texas. Make a splash, Dabo! Although it will be one year too late, bring some pride back to our D for next year!

The defense has been in a continuous decline since the second that BV left to become the Oklahoma HC. That decline runs through Wes Goodwin while he has done nothing to fix the problems that he has caused the defensive decline 3 years straight, so I ask, who has been responsible for getting the defense fixed, and the person that you point your fingers at, they should be replaced bc a coordinator shouldn't get a 4th year to fix something that wasn't broke when he took it over, period!!!

I rarely agree 100% but in this case, I do. The talent we have on defense should be getting better results. The fix is simple….replace Goodwin. He may have had some unique insights as an “analyst type” of guy, but that has not translated well fo DC. Dabo just has to find the stones to pull the trigger on this.

There are a lot of problems, which starts at the top (DC).

I'm shocked at how bad the tackling technique is/run fits are at LB.....(again, DC/LB Coach). How does this happen at this level?

Watched Denhof yesterday and honestly, there are better-coached DE's at the H.S. level. His technique is horrible. He dips his head/shoulders and loses his vision every, single, time he plays contain. Why?

Gap integrity.....well, there is none. Why?

Dabo needs to make the change, and make it ASAP.

I place this loss squarely on the Defensive Coaches, we have talent here for the most part but they just aren't getting the basics down, we have been exploited on defense with the run since the Louisville game and the good teams have took advantage. This will be this the biggest area to improve upon if we are to get back to the top of the mountain. Our young offense looked good and has a bright future for next year. Go Tigers!! Dabo, its time to make some hard decisions!! Grow some stones!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Embarrassing watching Denhoff start, he has no business playing D1 football.***

Good article, David.

4

Dec 22, 2024, 7:33 AM

You point out the problems without going on a rant about what the solutions are.

I don't know what changes will be made. It wouldn't surprise me if it included coaching changes. It wouldn't surprise me if it included getting 3 or 4 more guys in the portal. But, it wouldn't surprise me if neither of those happened. I'll just sit back and anxiously wait and see what Dabo decides to do.

Heck, 2 weeks ago I just assumed Cade would be back next year. I had not even the slightest thought he would head out to the NFL. Now, I'm not so sure at all. If he leaves, I'll be disappointed, but I won't be surpised.

Would like to admit. 0-3 against the SEC. This program can’t beat good to great teams. We don’t have a killer instinct. We are AWFUL at stopping the run.
Sorry, but pumping sunshine won’t help. Not at this time of the year. We need to reflect and figure out exactly what our problems are and attack them.

Re: TNET: Early Thoughts from Austin: The future is bright, but defense has to improve

Dec 22, 2024, 8:13 AM

The offense was exceptional. Keep in mind we were within a touchdown on the road against a very good team and we did not have a functional running back the entire game. That’s quite an accomplishment. The OC gets credit for that.

The defense has plenty of talent to compete with Texas, but players were constantly out of position, just like they have been all year. That falls on the coaches. It’s time to end Dabo’s experiment of hiring his buddies and go find a DC with a record of success. Clemson would have had a chance if BV was still here. But that’s the weak link in our chain. We’ve got too much talent on the field to be looking at the backs of jerseys as they run away from us all season long.

Let's think back to last year. Last year it was a great defense and an offense that could not do the job. This year it was a great offense. Yes, I think we got too conservative with small leads, giving the game to the 'Cookies and almost to SMU, but it was the defense, the supposedly reliable portion of our team, that let us down this year. What Klubnik did to the Texas defense was amazing. We've talked about playing a complete game. What we need is a complete season. The offense needs to keep improving, particularly in the running game, and we have the pieces to do that. Next year, we need an elite offense and an elite defense, and there is every reason to believe we can do it.

Goodwin is definitely a problem. The defense has not improved one bit on stopping the run after 13 games. Listening to Dabo after the game, he does not plan on replacing anyone. Everything is fine because we won the ACC title. A porous defense is staring him in the face and if he doesn't make changes there, then we can look forward to more years of this. Hiring and promoting his friends has become a problem. Glad we made the playoffs and after watching Tenn. get that beatdown, we represented ourselves well.

In the spring, we talked about "reloading" along the defensive front, but was that realistic. We had 4 defensive linemen drafted. Did anyone else in the country have 4 DL drafted last year? We had Wood and Parker coming back, but the other DE was uncertain at best. We had a number of guys at tackle that showed promise, but had rarely started. And we had a new DE coach. It is not so surprising that we lacked some gap integrity. Yes, the defense needs to improve next year, as does the offense, if we are going to have a chance to go further into the playoffs, but there are a number of reasons to think we might. Injuries took their toll, though that is true for all teams. The defense was really good last year, so I think it is a bit premature to start calling for Goodwin's scalp. The OL improved a lot this year and we have every reason to think they will be better next year. If Klubnik returns and the DL improves, as they should, we should be a top 5 team next year.

Our OL couldn't open holes. Texas's OL manhandled our DL and opened huge holes all night long.

Wes Goodwin ain't Brent Venables, but I'll bet Wes would look a much smarter DC with The Power Rangers (2-deep), Isaiah Simmons, et al.

Re: We don't have the player (especialy trench) talent to beat good teams like Texas

Dec 22, 2024, 4:16 PM

I thought Capehart and Williams would provide better depth. Not having Woods at DT all year hurt, but we didn't have a DE besides Parker, and he got off to a slow start (finished strong). Carter was up and down, and Sammy finally gave us some help at LB. We needed Woodaz to pay better, too. DB's were up and down, too. Mickens was pretty consistent, but he didn't have much help. I think it is a combination of coaching and talent level not what it used to be. Would have been nice to have Makuba in our secondary instead of in Texas.

Any DC or OC could look to be the smartest coaches in the country with that type of talent on their side of the ball. Kids that are athletic and have had great coaching coming up through the ranks, they usually don't need much coaching by the time they start playing college FB. Usually, they only need to be taught the schemes the school runs...

Gap integrity, tackling, players out of position, killer instinct, all things that the Tiger defense lacked this year. I appreciate how someone can be a great analyst, but not a great teacher. That's where Clemson is failing. There needs to be a change at DC, and Dabo needs to get back to being hungry and stepping on necks when they have teams down. I was horrified when Reilly stated they took their foot off the gas too early against SMU, and USC. Why do you take your foot off the gas at all? All of us saw that every game this year. Clemson also needs to get bigger and stronger at the point of attack. Unfortunately these are all changes that take a few years and awesome recruiting classes to accomplish. I hope the Clemson fans get used to top 10 to 20 teams..... Hopefully.
