You're right. They have lost a lot of credibility and it may have to be conferences that solve this, but as we saw during the pandemic, they don't play well together. SEC and Big Ten are on another level financially so it will be interesting to see if there is any consensus on what to do.

You're absolutely right, and now at least 3/4 of the colleges must pull away from the NCAA, and cut the money that funds the NCAA completely off, just as it would be if employee's refuse to do the jobs their employers hired them to do, they will be terminated, and the NCAA should be Terminated now, not 6 months from, they should be Terminated just as fast as an employer would Terminate an employee for refusing to do their JOB!!!!

Good article. I am glad someone feels as outraged by UNC's lack of disciplinary procedures when they were egregiously cheating (I am also ashamed of the ACC for not stepping in and doing something when the NCAA failed in its responsibility). It has not taken long for this to become an untenable situation. Yeah for Dabo for speaking out. The question is will there be a response that saves college football, or will we devolve into a semi-pro sport that has, at best, loose association with academic institutions.

It's obvious that there were tons of people in the NCAA, especially at the top, who were in it merely for hefty paychecks and cared nothing about the health of college sports. One reason that the NCAA did nothing to North Carolina and Kansas is because basketball, particularly the NCAA tournament, is their cash cow and the only thing they really cared about, and they were scared stiff of those schools. I know that for a fact as it came from people I know who worked there.

Good luck with restricting citizens from being able to earn money. What is lost in all the NIL banter is that universities exist to educate students not for the pleasure, or misery, of fans watching sports. If schools recruit football players from the portal that gives 20 kids a year a chance to get an education. Maybe everyone, including the NCAA, is looking at all of this the wrong way and there should be stricter education standards that would totally change the playing field and create a more regulated situation.

I agree totally with the need for education standards. Not quite sure how recruiting kids from the portal will give 20 kids a year a chance to get an education? The kids in the portal are already enrolled in a school and in most cases are already on scholarship. The kids who are being tampered with and lured into transferring by big NIL deals are not concerned about getting an education. They are trying to make their money now which is kind of hard to blame them for. I agree with Dabo. It is up to the adults to put some rules around this to somehow make the education the top priority. The kids didn’t create this problem. They are just taking what is being offered.

What are you mumbling about? 20 kids get a chance at a scholarship because of the portal? There’s a limited number of scholarships and with the portal the number of high schoolers getting a ride will drop as many schools will just jump in and take a developed player that another school invested a couple years of resources in. The result is kids will transfer around and take more redshirts and other fake reasons to keep playing under scholarship while many high schoolers get compared to guys 2 years older so they get passed over.

Now that might be the solution. I’m not opposed to the athletes earning some money but I think full ride has lost its importance. Out of state students are paying over $50K per year to attend. They don’t get nearly the benefits, tutoring, food nutrition, housing etc. I realize the athletes are busting it day in and day out but that’s a whole lotta money after 4 years.
In the end the sport is changing and not for the better

SACSCOC Accreditation and UNCheat
May 3, 2022, 10:12 AM
|
|
All regional accreditation does is allow students at an accredited institution to receive Federal Title IV funding. That is federal, state, local, institutional or other sources of grant aid. At UNCheat (IPEDS 2021 submission) this is 53% (10,260) of the 19,395 undergraduates in the 2021 cohort. If SACSCOC would have yanked their accreditation most of these students would, most likely, not have been able to attend UNCheat or have had to borrow the money to finance their entire education. Since all the cheating took place years prior, this would mean that current students would have had to suffer for what took place in the past.
SACSCOC did what it only could do. Basically, put them on double secret probation for a year. Once UNCheat promised not to do it again it was back to normal. What the NCAA should have done is yank all their championships and put them on death penalty for a couple of years. This penalty would have killed their athletic department, harmed the individuals in the athletic department that turned a blind eye to what was going on. The NCAA and UNCheat got exactly what they wanted with the outcome. It was the golden rule of athletics, he who got the gold makes the rules....

Beautifully put Mr. TIGERFANN ... no other explanation needed for the why's and outcomes of the UNC cheating scandal.
Here's where the SACSCOC could have been more helpful, and where the 'lesser' conferences (i.e., all other than the SEC and B1G) need to go:
Sanctions such as the 'one year double secret probation' that was imposed on UNC need to be 'enhanced' moving forard to a multi-year (i.e., 10 year) probation that the offending institution (in this case, UNC) must be forced to disclose on their academic promotional materials for the duration of their 'probation' time.
The 'offending university' then will probably face some defection of otherwise top end students who will go elsewhere. The reputation of the 'offending university' will suffer, making it more difficult for the to get private grant money for research and scholarships, etc.
Putting teeth into programs which punish colleges for allowing their athletes to cheat will also have a chilling effect on those colleges which want to buy players (using NIL) and use the portal to get them.
For the bad-student Portal Ho's who come to UNC ... if cheating is necessary for the Portal Ho' to pass and stay eligible ... then either the university risks losing accreditation (if they condone grade cheating) or they risk losing their NIL payout (i.e., still got to pay out their NIL money for Portal Ho's who can't play because they are academically ineligible).
(***) The NCAA should require that all NIL money must be guaranteed by either the private entity which is paying the NIL, or by the University which has the NIL athlete playing for them.
(***) Doing so will introduce a 'risk calculation' factor for the University of NIL Portal Ho's as they decide just how much risk they are willing to bear for their Portal Ho flavor of the week to romp around on their athletic facilities.

You stated that "conferences are unlikely to work together to solve sport-wide problems. As such, it likely must be the NCAA, with a new incoming president, to put together rules that allow players the benefits they deserve (and that the US Supreme Court guaranteed), while regulating the process enough to maintain the integrity of college football and prevent it from rapid decline" Aren't these conferences, and their athelectic directors and presidents technically the NCAA to begin with?

I believe that was a thinly veiled reference to the totally self-serving way the SEC set up their schedule in 2020 to avoid playing non-conference games.

If anyone tries to restrict it, some athlete will sue.
May 3, 2022, 11:39 AM

And take the case maybe all the way up to the SCOTUS, where the athlete's right to get shown the money will be upheld. Precedent, you know.
My guess is "college" football will be whittled down to just a relatively small handful of schools with big, rich alum networks and access to sources of big money. Maybe 20 schools tops. I don't see Clemson in this group. This will become the official minor league of the NFL. The very best athletes will go to these "schools" (really just school-sponsored football teams). High school will serve the role colleges do now, as a feeder system to the big leagues. IMG and huge schools in the big cities will flourish.
The rest of us will revert back to some semblance of what we have known as college football.

There is no way to legally distinguish between good, reasonable NIL deals, and bad (boosters-buying-players) NIL deals. It's a slippery slope that can't survive player-lawsuits. Short of a constitutional amendment, the chaos can't be put back in the box, therefore the big-money-booster schools will buy the best players (via NIL) and dominate college football. Neither the NCAA, nor the conferences, nor the lawmakers can do anything to stop it. Welcome to the new world order.

NIL is going.to destroy College Atletics, as well as the transfer portal. New NCAA President needs to change NIL Policy. 1) Best way to change it is that player can only collect NIL at 1 school. If said player goes to transfer portal, said player will not be eligible for NIL at new school. 2) Commitments to a University, while still in High School not allowed to accept NIL money til Sophomore year.with absolutely no exceptions. 3) Any player at Collegiate Level on a team that is receiving NIL money, that money goes into a pool to be divided evenly among all players on team. Example, 11 players on Football team receive a combined total of $400,000 in NIL Money. That amount is evenly divided and distributed to all Football Players on team. 4) Limit Transfer Portal to 1 time entry. To many are using it multiple times. Use portal to go somewhere else to play, that player is stick there until he Graduates from that University. If he has a redshirt season left after Graduation, and used the portal 1 time, he has no eligibility left to go anywhere else Everything I said in this would only happen in a perfect world. We don't live in one by any means, but this is what needs to happen in College Athletics to fix NIL and Transfer Portal. GO TIGERS!!!

Another superb article from the prolific Ryan Cantor (and by 'prolific' I'm not suggesting that you have dozens of unidentified offspring wandering around the upstate).
Ryan, here is a counter-intuitive thought about how to make the NIL less palatable to the super wealthy colleges.
First, a question: Does the current NIL deal mandate that the student athlete recipient of the NIL always get the full amount of the NIL deal ... or can the NIL deal be conditional. I.e., can some or all of the NIL get revoked if the player either doesn't play well enough, fails to show up for his or her promotional events / advertising shoots, or if he / she gets suspended or leaves the school?
(*) If any part of the NIL is 'voidable' by the NIL-sponsoring entity, then here is something that the NCAA might be able to do to impose a 'risk variable' to the NIL-sponsoring entity ... and also to the "University of NIL Portal Ho's" finances:
(***) The NCAA should require that all NIL money must be guaranteed to be paid in its entirety to the athlete ... without any stipulations as to the athletes performance, academic eligibility, or criminal record.
(I..) The 'NIL guarantee' must be contractually assured (with an insurance policy behind it ... e.g., a Lloyds of London type insurance company) so that full payout (regardless of conditions or circumstances surrounding the NIL athlete) is assured.
The 'NIL guarantee' can either be done via: (1) by the private entity(s) which are supporting the NIL -or- (2) the University which has the NIL athlete playing for them.
Doing so will introduce a 'risk calculation' factor for the University and/or the private entity which funds the NIL for the athlete in question.
(???) What about this being 'unfair' from a legal perspective to the businesses which want to NIL payments to get athletes to promote their products?
Here goes:
Since the NIL athletes are also full time students, the NIL paid athletes ... same as regular college students (e.g., non-athletes) who take jobs delivering pizzas or painting apartments ... must balance their 'job' with their education. Same with the Portal / NIL athlete.
But (let's be candid here) since there are a large % of athletes who come from not-wealthy families, then it could be considered as abusive for a private entity to 'lure' a not-fully-adult (i.e., less than 21 year old [too young to legally drink]) into agreeing to a NIL deal which is not fully guaranteed.
(II..) Oh yes, and if the Portal Ho' decides to leave his NIL-beneficiary school to pursue another NIL opportunity, then he gets to keep the entirety of his first NIL benefits and also to get new NIL benefits at the next school.
Maybe point (II..) is a bit much, but you get my drift.
Finally ... the P.R. problem for schools who object to such one-sided NIL rules from the NCAA will be viewed as welchers or cheats who are trying to fool kids into a contract from which the school / boosters can readily extract themselves.
SUMMARY: Introduce some risk into the Portal Hog / NIL Universities.
POSTSCRIPT: Also, the NCAA needs to get serious about announcing statutory long term penalties to colleges like UNC who commit academic fraud in order to keep their athletes eligible. This puts further pressure on the colleges to (a) not cheat [because of accreditation risk] and (b) not cheat [because of NIL liability risks].
Thanks again for the article!

Turn the USFL into the minors for the NFL. Kids could go from high school to the USFL if money is what they are after. If they want an education, go play at a college or university for free tuition…. No more NIL and the portal would have a one year sit out, no exceptions. There, I fixed that for you.

First let’s pray that wise men come together for the sport
May 4, 2022, 1:32 AM

Seriously we need to pray for these kids, very few are mature enough to handle the negotiation, the money, pressure & failure to make what they thought they deserved for their family.
Let’s be real, the coots-> the coots could buy a great team! That would really destroy the SEC plan.
The courts need to be challenged again on several new plans so legally their are some priorities. The whole system that was meant to develop players while providing an education has been paying for basically all the other sports as well.
This could not only destroy most football programs but also all the other sports being funded especially when other athletes sue because the football players are making more money.
This whole system is in a bigger crisis than most know and greed is being promoted. The biggest thing not yet mentioned that could topple the whole thing is when NIL money is used to affect gambling on the games. These NIL money supporters could use the power of their money to get the results they want by having their players throw games for big paydays that all their money supported kids get their cuts or raises. Who could legally stop it or prove it? Money becomes the root of much evil ??
Seriously we need to pray for the powers that be over football/sports before it’s to late to save what should be a rewarder of the student athletes and fans as well.
As tax payers we should be able to influence what’s done in the schools with the money going to these schools. I can’t imagine the money from NIL wouldn’t be taxed as well unless this is setup as a reward when they graduate so they could save their money for the future.
These kids brains aren’t fully formed until age 23, it would be a huge help for them to graduate before they could touch most of it ?? as an incentive for an education unless they qualify to go pro in year 3, then get their money or have an option to come back, for another year.
Dabo will go coach in the professional rank if this continues down this path and I can’t blame him. It’s crazy how the media attacks those who speak up for what’s best for these kids, that’s all Dabo wants.

Praying is a great idea. But part of prayer is for the wisdom to figure out how to do the right things and to take the right steps.
If the new portal / NIL rules can be amplified so that the all colleges (including the wealthy) see that the risk component of NIL starts to outweigh the benefits aspect, then for force of gravity (of course, this is one of the innumerable gifts from God) will put a chill on the NIL (no rhyme intended).
(*) Make the portal / NIL super expensive, and so that the 'NIL benefactor & school that 'coordinates' the NIL are permanently on the hook for whatever NIL deal gets done with the athlete.
If the athlete leaves NIL-school-A and goes to NIL-school-B, then NIL-school-A remains on the hook for the entire value of the NIL payout to the (now departed) player.
If the athlete leaves NIL-school-B and goes to NIL-school-C, then NIL-school-B also remains on the hook for the entire value of the NIL-school-B payout to the (twice-departed) player.
After this happens a few dozen times, the big paying NIL-schools will get sick of seeing their 'investments' wasted.
Then, the big paying NIL-schools will be eager to come to the table and be more willing to establish a 'salary capped' NIL program that works for everyone.
