Mafah and Shipley should have gotten 20 touches each. Play calling and O line protection in the overused pass game was the worst I've ever seen vs a pathetic defense.

I am not excusing the O-line, but perhaps we should give a little credit to the Tenn Defense. They really rose to the challenge and played well (despite their rankings)
Their linebacker Beasley was a BEAST - MVP of the game.

If “Best” is still the standard, their performance vs Tennessee wasn’t even close. Will be interesting to see if any changes are made in 2023, or if the leaders are content going forward to just be competitive in the ACC.

Insanity-Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. IF, changes are not made within the coaching staff, and we keep getting the same subpar results. You can see where I'm going with that. I don't need to call names of members of the coaching staff, we're all aware of individuals that are not in the right position. That being said, we do have the ingredients to have a special season next year. We have the talent at every position, but they have to get experience and get disciplined with their eyes. We have and extremely difficult schedule next season. We could potentially have to play 6 ranked teams next year. At least FSU, UNC, and Notre Dame are at home. GO TIGERS!!!!

This may be the last year of Clemson dominance in the ACC, FSU, UNC, ND, WF, NCS all are looking pretty good to finish off the season. Some big time changes are going to have to be made with Clemson to compete in the ACC going forward,
DABO wasted the last 2 yrs trying to mold DJU into a QB and really screwed the whole Team up in the process. IMO

Re “Dabo (and Streeter) wasting 2 years trying to mold DJU into a quarterback”: Yes, for a 5-star, can’t-miss recruit, DJU had some issues, mainly with confidence, mobility and vision of the entire field. But perhaps his teachers (Dabo and Streeter) did not have the ability fo fix all that. They may even have made it worse.
For comparison, consider Brock Purdy, a 3-star recruit who spent four years getting the coaching at Iowa State—hardly an elite football program—that enabled him to master the position of quarterback. So when the 49ers had to press third-striing Purdy into service after injuries to their two big-name quarterbacks, all he has done is lead them to 5 straight wins. Purdy was the last guy picked in the this year’s draft—in part because he DID NOT come from an elite college progam—and in his 5 games starting for San Francisco, he has completed 66% of his passes for 1,196 yards, 10 touchdowns and a QBR of 67.8. Sure, he has had plenty of help, starting with a great offensive line and a future Hall-of-Fame receiver named George Kittle—and an offensive scheme designed by Kyle Shanahan, one of the best. But the poise and accuracy shown by Purdy at the NFL level is the result of good coaching in college.
Heck, Dabo should offer Brock’s coaches at Iowa State offers they can’t refuse if he wants to transform Cade into an elite quarterback. But what about Trevor Lawrence, you ask. Yes, he won all but 2 games at QB for Clemson, so his coaches must have been doing something right. No, he was phenomenally gifted from the start, but actually regressed after leading Clemson to the national championship in his freshman year. Bottom line? Dabo needs better coaching on the offensive side. Without that, Cade will become mediocre and so will our program (that last part has already started).

Yes indeed, we should have followed the path of those great QB evaluators at UGA … they woo’ed USC transfer QB J.T. Daniels to start the 2021 season for them.
Barely on their radar after both Daniels and several backup QBs went through both Spring practice and Pre-season camp, former walk-on Stetson Bennett languished on the bench.
When UGA coaches got too frustrated with Daniels, they gave some reps to Bennett.
When given those reps (and the key part is next), Bennett … who was an experienced backup … proved that he had a sound understanding of the offense, an understanding of UGA’s pass blocking schemes (with such an understanding being critical for a QB knowing when to stay in the pocket and when to leave the pocket), and accuracy on all passes … including deep routes.
Facing such obvious skills and knowledge about how to play college QB, UGA finally figured out that S.Bennett was ready to replace J.T. Daniels.
BTW, UGA has another highly rated HS QB riding the bench … Brock Vandegriff or something like that. Why is UGA wasting this kid away? What is wrong with UGA’s coaches?

I can see your frustration about DJU and Dabo’s decision to start him every game in 2021.
We had all-world backup QB Taisun Phomachanh being kept on the bench, we lost 3 games with an especially embarrassing 3 - 10 loss to UGA.
Ah yes, idiot coaches abound everywhere. After portalling his way to GA Tech, HC (forgot his name) had T.P. as 4th (or was it 3rd) string. T.P. since has transferred to a NE FB powerhouse (is it UConn?); undoubtedly UConn will be in CFP next year.
My oh my … if Dabo had only taken the advice of TNet’s geniuses, then we would have gone 15 - 0 in 2021, and the team would not be screwed up.
Why didn’t you speak up sooner, JDCAT?

Dear ComeonMan,
Why so late in recognizing this?
If Grant N. followed your advice, Dabo would have been canned at end of 2020 season when we lost to OH State.
That great brain of yours going under-utilized … oh the humanity of it all.

We went into Bowl season with a true freshman QB who had very little real game experience, and was thrust into his first start against the best team we'd played all season. And to help him out we provided pathetic protection and were unable to pick up the middle linebacker or safety who came straight up the middle untouched all night, not to mention DTs and DEs who beat our OT's like a yard dog all night long. Then instead of taking some of the pressure off of the inexperienced true freshman by utilizing our strength, which is the best RB duo in the conference, and one of the best in the nation, we abandoned the run almost completely until the second half, which led to our QB being pressured relentlessly and forced into making too many hurried and desperate throws. To top it all off, our DBs were caught snoozing on multiple occasions which led to long explosive scoring plays.
The result was a frustrating, embarrassing loss.

Totally agree. Our game plan was inexplicable when starting Cade. We should have protected him by running the ball. I am sure T was loading the box and daring us to beat them throwing. So we took the bait and played to our weakness. It’s so dang frustrating.

TN was a 2 loss team, rated #6 in the country, which had 3 weeks to study our offense under CK2.
It is clear that TN knew CK2’s weaknesses from watching the UNC film.
It is also clear that they recognized one particular OL weakness that even us amateurs recognized; Blake Miller is still a work-in-progress as far as pass blocking.
As far as focusing on our run game, you are darn right that was TN’s defensive focus. That is why we tried so many short pass routes (which were pleasingly effective compared to most of our luck with these during 2022 season).
CK2 did very well (again, taken in context throughout our season) on these short routes. Those short routes also helped to ‘nurture’ CK2 during the game.
Unfortunately, having to live on a diet of short routes does not open up the defense very much, and TN could keep their Safeties and LBs close to the line of scrimmage.
TN’s defensive coaches. Again, they had scouted CK2 and realized that he had not yet acquired pocket presence and had a tendency to scramble prematurely to his right. Their blitzes made it home on most cases to fluster CK2 … who too often ignored his check down receiver and instead threw up prayers or threw it away.
When we approached the red zone, the further compression of TN’s defense led to run game difficulties and less maneuver room for pass patterns. (Even the CBs were up close when we got near the red zone.
In summary, it’s not just as simple as running Shipley and Mafah more.

putting it mildly. I saw linemen give a mediocre effort, then stand watching Cade getting hit repeatedly.
Upon one sack the camera focused on Cade glaring at one of our fellows with a "WHAT" look. Cade knew.

For some reason, we couldn't pick up that "disguised" blitz,
Jan 2, 2023, 9:25 AM
|
|
but one of the announcers repeatedly, before the ball was snapped, pointed out the guy that was going to blitz, and he did. I really feel bad for Cade. He definitely made rookie mistakes; he made some ill-advised throws, he took some sacks when he should have dumped it, and he repeatedly failed to step up into the pocket. But, that's about what I'd expect for a true freshman making his first start in a huge game. What is inexcusable is the fact that Cade wasn't prepped with more game time throughout the year so that he would be more ready if and when needed, especially since DJ struggled and was so inconsistent all year. My expectations for our coaches are considerably higher than they are for a true freshman.

We had too many games that had not been locked up yet by mid-Q4 to risk putting an inexperienced CK2 simply to give him game experience.
I do agree that our refusal to put him in for meaningful snaps against BC was a short sighted mistake by our coaching staff.
(I do not categorize the Syracuse game as being a major learning experience; PI penalties are not a good measure of either good or bad passing and the run-heavy game plan when CK2 entered the game is not much of a test for a QB.)
As for CK2 making his first start in a huge game (TN) … technically you are of course correct.
However, the implication that CK2 had no extensive big game experience is, as you of course know, simply untrue. UNC.
BTW, I hope that the New Year is starting out well for you.

The PFF grades which were revealed in the article reveals that poor play by multiple key players suggest that poor work by our players (e.g., much more than just the OL) was responsible for the loss.
Not arguing that our offense coaching staff was maddeningly slow to make blocking adjustments for TN’s inside blitzing during 1st half. Put a TE or a RB for pass protection … maybe there was a good reason to not make that move, but I do not recall that problem being singled out by our coaches.
Of course, if you choose to ignore data such as PFF ratings, then there’s not much sense in reading the article itself.

He was never given the opportunity to develop on the field during the season. Coaches decisions there. He couldn’t be expected to be an accomplished athlete in this situation with those shortcomings in preparation

DABO is really having some problems if he has to scratch his head wondering what happened in this game!! DABO make the right decision's, sometimes you have to be the bad guy and fire people. You cant be the good ole' boy all the time man!!

Now look!
Seems to be a trend with lots of players, especially on the OL where our best lineman is a freshman. Heck, our best QB and WR are both freshmen too.
If we are going to be a developmental program that does not take portal players then we need coaches that don't need to develop themselves!

He played horribly this year. He was hurt at times. Probably because he is very undersized. Coverage skills have to improve dramatically. I hope it’s just a classic sophomore slump, but my head says different.

And all the coaches will say is that we need to cleanup our "technique". How long does that take?!?!?
If we don't make coaching changes, we will still be hearing that next season. Fix the dang "technique"!
PS: maybe we need more depth, especially in the secondary. Maybe they know the "technique" but are tired.
AND PLEASE find out why the OL did not block for Cade!

Thoughts on Grades
Jan 2, 2023, 12:25 PM
|
|
1. Why are so many fans excited to have these vet o-linemen back. They are bad. No signs of improvement. 2. Payton Page graded twice as well as Ruke. Why is Ruke getting twice the reps? Dabo and Tiger coaches have a penchant for playing inferior upperclassmen at all positions for months & years to the detriment of game performance. 3. Barrett Carter is our top defender and most versatile IMHO. Trotter is good - more size will help.

Ruke got twice as many snaps because he has played well all season. He had a bad game. Page has really developed (maybe just from being in better shape) but Ruke earned the snaps. Our secondary played their worst game since WF. Maybe we could have pressured Milton more, but that is on Goodwin and scheme, more than the Dline.

Yes, well, about this offensive line. As a prior poster stated we get "excited" about returning starters. Why? Against a good D Line or blitz package they get completely overwhelmed in pass protection. Knowing that UGA was dominant last year and UT has a solid front seven we can look at the PFF grades and see that our progress over two full years is ZERO going from the UGA debacle to this years final nail in the coffin. Hoped Austin would help. I couldn't say but the result is the same. Obviously from the center over to RT they are either physically overwhelmed or don't have the footwork to get it done depending on the player. Our "best" is at left tackle of course. No knock but truth is that he's the shortest LT at a P5 school at 6'2" but we were told he had long arms for his height. He's playing out of position for whatever reason. So darn frustrating that all the top schools have a LT that is 6'6" to 6'8" (Evan Neal) with footwork. But we are stuck with a fill in that should be a guard or RT. No change in sight that I can see. We lose our LT and Center. LG back from injury will help. Mayes was rated as the #2 tackle in the country coming in but has only played due to the injury to Marcus Tate. They come in rated high and leave without ever doing much. Almost none going to the next level. We've changed coaches, maybe we need to peel the onion back to the core in strength and conditioning because we are missing the boat badly at this position and have been for the last 20 years.
