I certainly agree with Jeff on the line splits, but I believe our splits have closed down because we mainly haven't been able to protect the QB.... don't know if it's due to lack of strength technique, footwork or quickness - but all of that begins with recruiting and coaching. Last year, big line splits just gave the rushers a nice lane for sacking the QB.
On blocking leverage I couldn't agree more. I see too much pitty-pat hand blocking at the point-of-attack, where a good shoulder drive block is required to move the defender and open the hole. The idea of our style of standup zone blocking appears to be to attack the defender's shoulder pads, turn him until you get side leverage and push him out of the hole. That's OK, but a good drive block gets underneath leverage and puts the defender on his ####. we can still use the zone scheme with drive blocking - at least on running plays - but on running plays you don't necessarily have to use zone blocking - you can just go man-on-man.Sorta like the difference between dogs and cats.... our zone blocking is the kitty cat where a good drive block is a dog.

We don't get no dregs. Our O Line can handle the wide splits and leverage techniques. Heck, that's what Chad Morris had us do when he turned around the O. All of a sudden, we got away from that (see "the spread").
You play fast, you show different "looks". Heck, what we do now is so .... my High School. Three yards and a cloud of dust and very predictable.

We may have good athletes on the O-line, but something isn't quite clicking. We tried some wide splits last year, but the line became a sieve against pass rushers. Then we tightened up the splits and to protect the QB and became visibly predictable whether pass or run when we set the line pre-snap.
The trick is to adjust the splits so it can be the same whether run or pass - that way you don't telegraph pass or run. We need to set it wide enough to create good cut-back lanes for the RB/QB with the zone blocking, yet tight enough to protect the QB. In order to do that, we have to have quickness and good footwork along the O-line - coupled with situational awareness to read the stunts and react accordingly.
Of course, it would also help to have a mobile QB....

We would have went to all 8 college football playoffs instead of "only" 6. We would have played in every national championship game in the CFP era if we weren't awful. And heck, we wouldve probably won every single national championship.. if we just weren't awful.

When Jeff Bostic speaks about O-Line, everyone (should) listen. This post's focus is "O-Line raw materials" ... the athleticism plus strength ... with special focus on the Guards and Centers.
First, the Tackles: The starters are both athletic & strong, the strength of our O-Line. We're good to go here. Our starting Tackles could play almost anywhere at other college football O-lines.
Next, the Center: Looks to me like Will Putnam is athletic enough to handle the C job with the tighter splits (with the Guards nearby); Putnam is surely strong enough. If he can snap it OK, then we're good at Center. M.Trotter needs to get bigger (and do what other thinks need to be done so that he plays instead of just practicing). R.Linthicum is a ??? since we haven't seen much of him & he's young. Howard, the same as Linthicum.
Next, the Guards - Part 1: Marcus Tate is both strong and athletic, which is obvious to even amateur fans like me. M.Tate can be taught the Jeff Bostic way.
Finally, the Guards - Part 2: OK, now what? We've got presumably strong guys (D.Pennington, B.Tucker), but are they athletic enough? We've got what appear to be at least one really athletic guy (M.Mayes), but is he strong enough? We've got two young true FR studs (C.Sadler & B.Miller) who appear to be athletic enough, and will surely develop additional strength ... but are they strong enough now to play Guard against big boy opponents?
(***) Do we have the building blocks to field an O-Line that can play as J.Bostic had suggested?

1) It seems like he's advocating a return to the 3 pt stance, not the 2 point as the article states.
2) I think the issue with wider splits on the Oline today is the insane athleticism of DLs and DEs.

For several years now I have been wondering why we have not been playing with larger splits on our offensive line when we just have not had the size per lineman. Just watch all-pro center Jason Kelce of the Eagles, an undersized center by NFL standards, who under line coach Jeff Stoutland (formerly of Alabama) has mastered his technique and mobility to his advantage. Most often he is able to deal with the defensive lineman opposite him and effectively get to the second level to make a second block on a linebacker or onrushing safety or CB. On other occasions he will actually pull and lead a rushing play down field for a running back. I have actually seen him effectively be able to effectively block three defensive players on a single play. If we are not large, then we need to teach more effective techniques and work to maximize our mobility - then we can make larger splits work to our advantage!!! My how effective our total offense can be - and especially if we speed up our initiation of plays to get back to 80-85 offensive plays per game!!!! GO TIGERS!!!!

Jeff was a lineman back in the glory days of the Oline at Clemson. I miss the power blocking when we ran the ball and the linemen was nasty, blocking machines.

Do you all remember when Chris Gardocki verbally stated what the kicker was doing wrong? I certainly do. Our coaches need to listen to Bostic. He knows what he is talking about.

Bostic was in my public speaking class back in the day - he was a confident guy and gave a pretty good speech. No doubt he knows O-line play. Maybe a guest speaker for a week and a “coach the coaches” approach has merit.
