This article right here is part of the reason I am a Cowboy fan today. I have been following the 'Boys since day one and will continue to do so for as long as I am around. I was a "big" Charlie Waters fan back in the '60s and '70s, among others of course. The only problem I have today with "my " cowboys is the brain trust of the Organization doesn't seem to target any Clemson players in their draft selection. Don't think for one moment I wouldn't want a DeShaun, or a Sammy, a Nuke, a Grady Jarrett wearing the silver, and blue. Who knows, maybe next years NFL draft will see a former Clemson player landing in "BIG D".

Clemson players were not so plentiful in the NFL back then, somy father supported the cowboys be suse they had a Clemson man, and so did I until they fired Tom Landry.

The Cowboys have been scrubs since that idiot owner JJ fired Jimmy Johnson. I was a Cowboy fan until JJ hired Barry Switzer and they've been a joke pretty much ever since. I don't really care much about the NFL unless it's to support whatever team is playing the Cowturds and I live nearby.

I was always a huge Waters fan. I think he played a different position every year at Clemson as I recall. I didnt actually start following Clemson till after he was in the pros

Gil Brandt was the Cowboy's Dir of Personnel and was great at thinking out of the box in finding great players. He drafted a track star-Bob Hayes, a player from Ouachita Baptist-Cliff Harris, a QB who couldn't play until he served in the Navy for 4 years-Roger Staubach, a Clemson QB/WR to play defense and a player who was going to the WFL 1st-Herchel Walker.
My mother was from Ft Worth and I was a big Cowboys fan. They had the only SC player I ever liked, Dan Reeves, and Charlie.

Herschel went to the USFL, and you are right that Brandt was good in the 60s and 70s. He was terrible in the 80s and JJ was right in firing Landry, but he went about it the wrong way. Jimmy Johnson built the great teams of the 90s and even though Landry was a hero, I was fine with Johnson. But, that prick Jerry Jones couldn't stand the fact that Johnson was better than him and he got rid of the brains behind the organization. Since Jones got rid of Johnson, they've been about .500 since and that is too funny. I will give JJ credit for building a great stadium and practice facilities in Plano, or Frisco, wherever it's located. But, he doesn't know football and he's ruined the team.
I did love Charlie Waters and Dan Reeves. I grew up a huge fan, but the frustration of the meddling Jones is too much. He can snort all the coke he wants for all I care.

No kidding. It's been extra bad this week. My first-grade nephew could do a wee bit better. It's extremely difficult reading this stuff as a creative writing major/journalist. Punctuation, quote marks, commas, friggin' spelling. I've learned to skip the writer's summation of its following quote due to it simply mimicking the quote.
Dabo said Tuesday they had a good practice. "We had a good practice Tuesday," he said.
Duh. Where have I read that before? Mm? In the summation graph?
It's just difficult. I worked in professional regional and sometimes national journalism for 15 years. This material gets juvenile at times.
But, I get it. You get what you pay for.

My brother-in-law lives next door to Gene Stallings out in Paris, TX. Of course, next door is about 2 miles away. But there are no houses in between. And the street isn't really a street. It's a gravel road that's a mudhole when it rains and a dustbowl when it doesn't.

Charlie came to Clemson while I was there as a highly touted quarterback from North Augusta (or Augusta) His brother Keith was already in school and eventually wound up as a placekicker on the team, maybe from a student body try-out. I don't think he played too much or ever had much of an impact on the team. Charlie eventually played wide receiver and ha d a good career.

Charlie Waters grew up in North Augusta and I followed him closely in school and with the Cowboys. Later in the Army I met his brother, Dr. Keith Waters, and we went over Charlie's career. This was after the third game of the year. I boldly examined our schedule after the UGA game and told him we would win the Nat. Championship. After we beat Neb. he wanted to know how I knew. I hope he reads this and recalls our conversations.

Keith is still around, but not sure where he lives. My brother met him in Greenville at a friend's house recently.

Charlie Waters was my first recollection of my Dad following

a pro football player.
So, of course, Charlie was my favorite of all-time.
Those Super Bowls & knowing he was a Clemson Man - was a very impressionable piece of my early childhood & knowing that there was something special about this Clemson place.

Waters "was smarter than everybody else, he played faster than everybody else, he saw it, he anticipated."
This takes our "Before Renfrow there was Humphries" thread all the way back to 1970.

The part about "he couldn't run" is incorrect. The Cowboys would not have put him at CB if they thought that he couldn't run. Both he and Keith had very good speed. Keith was on my floor at Boys State. Craig Baynham (Kingstree>Georgia Tech>Cowboys) was on my floor as a floor monitor. I ran into Keith later at Ft. Bragg. Keith was the starting CF on the Tiger baseball team. Newspapers didn't cover recruiting then. I didn't know about Charlie until Keith told me. I was much delighted when Keith said that he hoped Charlie was going to sign with Clemson. Freshmen played on the freshman team then. In his 2nd year, he started as a QB & then switched to WR when an injured QB came back. The article didn't mention that their dad had a heart attack & passed away in the stands at a game in Atlanta vs. the Falcons. Also that Charlie lost a whole year when a knee went out due to a non-contact injury. Last I heard, Keith was living in Easley. Charlie was working with Cliff Harris.
