Dabo has been clear from the beginning about what “Best is the Standard” means. The team, staff, get it. Some fans, but mostly detractors, don’t get it. It doesn’t mean being better than your competition. It just means do your best. Duh.

But it's so nebulous that it becomes useless. Every single team in the country says that "trying your best" should be the expectation.

To me it just gets watered down and is one step above someone putting up the "Hang in there" kitten poster in the locker room.

My daughter has come and gone from Clemson, but I still follow the team. Dabo has a good program with the right intentions…but the “game” has changed. Now the NIL money and the transfer portal is shaping College Football. Take it or leave it…that’s the reality of it. Clemson has usually been a true contender in most games I have watched, meaning most losses have been respectably close. They are still fun to watch, but they are not close to being a contender for the National Championship. Until Dabo jumps off the cliff and figures out that the game has passed him by….this is what we are stuck with. And in my opinion, it’s still a good program. Be careful what you wish for..ie Georgia…you can win a couple of Natty’s and have a team full of kids demanding to be paid and boatloads of off the field issues. Clemson Football sells tickets and the major networks love Dabo…I dont think much is going to change anytime soon. In the meantime, I will continue to pull for them and take pleasure from their success…as they all say, “it’s hard to win in this league”. Im also a Carolina Panthers fan lol, kind of reminds me how good we have it as Clemson fans!

I think Dabo’s always been clear about what that phrase means and it echoes something straight out of “Desiderata”: “Do not compare yourself to others or you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be those persons greater or lesser than yourself.”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This whole retort on that phrase is a strawman . . .

1

Oct 18, 2023, 2:24 PM

as well as a red herring. Almost no one has interprets "BEST is the Standard" to mean that Clemson is **always** on top in terms of wins, losses, bowls, championships, playoffs, etc." That said, final results can, to a certain degree - not with exact correspondence, but to a degree - be at least one relevant indicator (in a broader context) as to whether or not potential has been maximized or not. Drawing coneections between certain decisions and philosophies and the fruit they've born is not equivalent to reducing that mantra to "win every game" or "always be champion." This doesn't mean all such connections are valid, or that all such critiques are true . . . but they aren't simplistic "we lost too much for my liking" equivalencies. Everyone knows this.

I don't entirely understand all the portal upheaval - I can see valid points on both sides, but I tend to think Dabo's making wiser decisions on that front than he's given credit for (and heck, maybe I'm wrong - I don't claim to particularly knowledgeable on all that). But Dabo isn't going to help this situation by reflexively writing off virtually all criticism as mal-contents who flip out whenever Clemson isn't 15-0.

I agree fully with this definition and have understood it to be that. All that said, we haven't lived up to this definition. Missing easy FGs and fumbling the ball is not the "best" effort/execution that those individuals can achieve. That is the frustration, but do think it can be corrected and that gives me hope and expectation for better results for the rest of the season.

I also find it ironic that the slogan was said/plastered in print/read/spoken about so much more over the 2015-2019 years than it has been the last 3-4 years............coincedence??........regardless of what it truly means, it doesn't have the "same ring to it" when the play on the field doesn't "fit" the slogan.

“Best Is (The) Standard is about being and doing your best in everything that you do,”

If "in everything that you do" includes head-coaching your team to championships, then Dabo is no longer trying to be the best at everything he does because he refuses to aggressively use the portal to fill holes in the roster.

But if he's ideologically opposed to aggressively utilizing the portal to win championships (perhaps on perfectly reasonable moral grounds), then maybe "in everything that you do" means only in the things that he ideologically agrees with, not necessarily the things that he could do to win championships.

According to the following Athlon article, which lists the portal acquisitions for each team, Clemson is, BY FAR, the outlier. One could argue that Dabo is the best at adhering to an ideology of avoiding the portal.

https://athlonsports.com/college-football/college-football-transfer-portal-team-by-team-additions-tracker-2023

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Only 3 schools with fewer transfers than Clemson (1)...

1
1

Oct 18, 2023, 4:38 PM

- and Clemson's lone transfer was a backup QB. They were: Air Force, Army, and Navy (0 transfers each). Maybe Dabo is trying to take Clemson back to our military heritage by following the "Academies"? Heck, even Georgia added 3 transfers (the next fewest on the list behind us), as if they needed any more help! That's 3x Clemson's Portal usage!

Take-away from this TN article is: The saying, "Best is the Standard" doesn't actually mean being The Best, only doing YOUR Best. Got it. So, the next logical question is: Has everyone on the team actually been doing their best the past few years? Even the past few games? I think an honest answer to that would be very illuminating, if ever we could get it. My gut feeling is that The Standard has not been upheld by many on the team. That's why many fans are complaining; we see a discrepancy between what is said and what is done. Words and slogans ring hollow when they aren't backed up by actions on the field. I love my Tigers and hope I live to see the day that that slogan once again returns to meaning not only individuals' personal best, but also "The Best in College Football" too.

I understand the thinking of Coach Swinney, but it seems like the motto needs to be changed to
" Be the Best You Can Be ". It appears a lot of fans literally and understandably took the motto " Best is the Standard " meaning anything less than the best is unacceptable. Sometimes it seems Coach Swinney needs to give the coach speak a rest and let the performance of the team do the talking. At times his words are used against him and it allows a narrative to be shaped that he constantly is trying to recover from.

I've had enough of Dabo's play on words whenever it benefits him, he's beginning to sound hypocritical. He doesn't own up or even admit that his approach in today's landscape of college football is wrong, backwards, unsuccessful, declined, etc. If he's too arrogant to adjust his approach in order to better the team and take advantage of the landscape of college football today, that's not ok, the program deserves better!

Sad that a coach that has won 2 National Championships, many CFP appearances (2nd most I believe) and more ACC championship seasons than non-championship seasons is put in a position that this is the discussion. Come on Clemson fanbase, we are better than this.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Pretty sad

Oct 18, 2023, 6:11 PM [ in reply to Pretty sad ]

I agree with you 100%. Who do these people think we could hire that could do a better job than he has since he has been our coach?. Having been a Clemson graduate over 50 years ago, we have had our ups and downs but I was always proud of the men we put on the field. There was a time that being in the ACC meant limited scholarships and higher College Board scores to attend that affected our ability to get the best players. Since the late 1970's when the playing field was leveled, we had two great periods of football (Danny Ford & Dabo Swinney) and three good periods (Charlie Pell, Ken Hatfield & Tommy Bowden). The Tommy West days were the low point. Even Frank Howard who coached for about 30 years had an overall record of 165 wins, 1i8 losses & 12 ties and lost more than he won against the Gamecocks (Note: Few of the games were played in Clemson). These are the glory days! No doubt about it!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Pretty sad

2

Oct 18, 2023, 8:29 PM

Ken Hatfield inherited Danny's recruits. From 1990,in 3 years at the helm, he destroyed the program with a 5-6 record in 1992. He was a disaster for Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Coaches never have total control over things like recruiting, transfers, etc. However,

4

Oct 18, 2023, 3:57 PM

Dabo 100% has control over making the absolute best decisions, best hires, and best choices for how to engage in the new college football landscape.

Whether you believe he is doing that or not, probably depends greatly on what you think about whether best is standard. Some of us think he’s fallen short with his staff decisions.

If a fan of any program believes his or her team will win every game, in every sport, every year, there are doctors that can treat you. The well, "we did it before we should do it again" crowd are just living in a dream world because nobody wins every game forever. I was in Miami in 81 when we beat Nebraska and that feeling was the top of the mountain as a fan but I never one time thought about not getting my tickets and going to games and bowls even when we lost. To be able to have our season tickets in 16 and 18 and watch those teams were 2 other top of the mountain feelings even though we did not attend the championship games. Winning is great but doing your best is even better.

Stupid article. No one thinks "Best is the Standard" means you never lose. There's never been a team that was invincible. But it does mean that you're putting yourself in the best position to succeed and to be the best team. Yeah, it does involve comparing yourselves to others. Guess what? Clemson is playing other teams every week. It's a sport. A sport by definition is a comparison to others. I guarantee you Dabo and his lawyers compared Dabo's salary to other coaches when negotiating his extension.

But I don't care how you define the term, the past few years do not meet it. If it's being "the best you can be," that does not mean:

-hiring your friends to positions for which they do not have experience and are not qualified

-surrounding yourself by yes men who will not question your decisions.

-putting your children and their friends on the team, taking up scholarship spots, especially when your children are objectively the worst athletes on the team

-playing players because of some weird sense of loyalty, rather than a meritocracy and giving the position to the best player

-refusing to adapt to a changing landscape, be it the portal or NIL, even while we fall while others pull ahead

-attacking those fans who demand better from the second highest-paid coach in America.

You 98.5%ers are only showing not only that you're a part of his creepy little cult, but that you are content for mediocrity. I've seen a number of you say Dabo has lifelong tenure now, no matter what happens. That tells me all I need to know about you and your personal/professional life. Winners do not have that kind of attitude.

I don't agree with a lot of what Dabo has done over the last couple of years, but yes he has lifelong tenure and he has earned it. I can disagree with him all day long, but I can't say that I would have made all the decisions that he did to build the program into what it is. It is tough for me to see him doing anything to offset that. I was not happy with last year but we did win the conference. We are less than 3 years removed from the CFP. I will complain about some things he does, I hope that he makes some changes to adjust to college football's current landscape, but regardless he is my coach as long as he wants to be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oct 18, 2023, 4:47 PM

If BEST is the Standard, and by his definition it's about being and doing the best that you personally can do and be, and I do believe that is what Dabo meant when he come up with that slogan. I would like to ask Dabo just one question, did you do the best that you could have done when you hired the coaches that we have coaching high caliber kids coming into the program expecting to have some the best coaches in the country that could be brought to Clemson and work beside him to coach those kids up to be the best that they can be. If his answer is yes, I would say BS because he hired inexperience coaches within and didn't do a national coaching search to try and bring in the most experience coaches that he could have hired to come to Clemson and be a part of Best is the Standard.

I personally believe that the answer is no he didn't do his BEST to meet the standard of the coaches that was hired to be a HC's, nor did he hire position coaches that would meet the standard of the ones that followed those coaches to their new HC ing Jobs. It would be hard for some of the position coaches that he hired to get a job at some of the better high school programs around the country!!! So to me, Best is the Standard is just empty words that Dabo come up with and throwed out there to give the media folks something else to talk about that is now laughable...

Would I like to see another HC to come and replace Dabo, heck no bc I believe that Dabo can fix some of the biggest issues that is hurting the program right now at this time. BUT, if he allows he pride to interfere with him making the changes that could get our program back to competing for ACC, and National Championships, then I would say yes that there needs to be a change at the HC ing position. But I believe that he has seen enough of what's happening and he will make some needed moves for fix the problems that's hurting this team right now. In Dabo I still believe in, and I'm still at this time All In, Go Tigers!!!!

This is my take on "Best is the Standard".

1) It does NOT mean Clemson is to always be the Best, undefeated, champions every year, etc. In fact, it was never meant to be this. No, despite what Dabo says, I don't think any fans ever thought this is what it meant.

2) Also, despite what Dabo is now claiming, I don't think it means "your best". If that were the cast, then Division III schools could also hang up the same banner. Hell, I could hang up my banner at my house if I do yard work to the best of my ability. This is also never what is meant. I think this is one example of Dabo back peddling and changing definitions.

3) What Best is the Standard has ALWAYS meant from day one, in Dabo's mind as well as the fans mind, is "BEST IN CLASS". What this means is although we may have an off year or two, the program, staff and athletes will always remain in the Top Tier of college football. It doesn't mean a championship every year, it doesn't even mean an ACC championship each year, but it means we are to remain the running for a title every year.

Now, here comes the issue at hand, because currently we are not "Best in Class" or "Top Tier" and that is what Dabo is not willing to admit. We are not Top tier in staff or athletes at the moment. No amount of reimaging of definitions is going to change what Best is the Standard has always meant and will continue to mean long after Swinney has left Clemson.

Because I said you were the perfect fan for me
Baby, and now we're three years older
And everything you want, and everything you see
Is out of reach, not good enough
I don't know what the hell you want from me, oh
… Uh-huh, uh-huh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Ah-ha, ah-ha, doo-doo-doo
La, la, la, la, la
Uh-huh, uh-huh, oh-oh, oh-oh
Ah-ha, ah-ha, doo-doo-doo
La, la, la, la, la
… Somebody tell me, oh
Won't you tell me?
Why I work so hard for you
Give you game wins
Work to give you game wins (oh)
… Some people work for a living
Some people work for fun
Fans, I just work for you
They told me coaching was a give-and-take
Well, you've shown me you can take, you've got some giving to do
And now you tell me that you expect me to win?
I'll tell you that I'm happy if you want me to
But one step further and my back will break
If my best isn't good enough, then how can it be good enough for you?

Dabo is letting the outside noise get to him too much, he would have never done this about 5 years ago.

I love Dabo and everything he has done for Clemson. That said $10 million per year comes with expectations of championships. You can’t take the money and have thin skin

7-5 over last 12 games is an eye opener***

5-5 when meaningless games against Charleston Southern and FAU are discounted.

Bally Sports, and not surprisingly, ESPN reported today "when the Clemson Program ran into adversity, Coach Dabo Swinney blamed it on the fans." A Bally Sports reporter stated "Can you imagine the response Ryan Day would receive from Ohio State fans with a similar statement?"

This type of intentionally cheeky reporting presents a bad look for the program and recruiting.

So they do read the boreds!!

I have a hard time believing that some of Dabos recent decisions are his best.

Decisions such as hiring some of the assistants he has and not using the transfer portal to fill needs. Those are lazy moves and can’t possibly be Dabo’s best.

He might think they are his best, but based on his prior history of making outstanding decisions for the program, it seems clear that we haven’t seen his best lately.

When Dabo was hired he said he wanted other schools to want to be like Clemson. From 2013 - 2020 they did. For the last 3 years not so much. If he can overcome his stubborness he can right the ship. Otherwise, the slope continues downward.

Not that it matters what I think, since I am only a paying fan and a former player, but when I first saw that slogan "Best is the Standard" I loved it. I sincerely believed it meant the best facilities, the best coaches, the best players, the best food, the best conditioning, the best education, the best jobs and career programs, the best travel and accommodations, the best of everything. That is what I thought it meant. I guess I was naive.

Now, I find out it just means to try as hard as you can and everybody gets a trophy. Very disappointing that I misunderstood this all these years.

Clearly when you have top 5 talent but cant win your conf

Oct 19, 2023, 5:21 AM

Your team is not embracing BEST is the standard even as Dabo is defining. If they were then they wouldn’t be where they are right now. This offense has talented recruits all over the place, yet look at how anemic and mistake riddled it looks. And by the way, BEST includes the coaching staff too. They need to be their BEST at spotting and recruiting highly talented players, their BEST at developing those players and their BEST at coaching and putting those players in the best position to win.

Based on results we either are not getting their BEST or their BEST is not sufficient to make this team THE BEST right now. So Dabo lays out the objectives every season to measure the team’s success and when we don’t attain many of those goals for 2-3 years in a row, that says to the fans Dabo is not living up to his own personal standard of being the BEST he can be based on his past achievements.

If your coaching is not getting the team ready enough to hit many of the objective/goals that are clearly stated every year going on 3 years now, then you are not living up to BEST is the standard. It’s as simple as that. We have seen you at your BEST so that benchmark has been set. We need you to get back to being that BEST Dabo!

As long as Dabo is moving the goalposts, maybe he can do the same when our kicker is attempting a field goal.

So recruit Corky from life goes on at QB, promote the janitor to Defensive Coordinator and say, well, they’re doing their best and that’s the standard? Look, I get what he’s saying but anyone that doesn’t know this is coach speak to get people to accept what has turned out to be a disappointing season is lost. Now go win some ballgames that matter with all this talent or do whatever is necessary to be the best again and by best I mean winning ballgames and earning trophy’s!

When Dabo said "The best is yet to come", he should have finished his sentence. "The best is yet to come for my bank account." Should we expect to win the national championship every year or make the playoffs, no. But the second highest paid coach in the nation should at least keep us in the top 10 or in the very least, the top 25 every season. I guess watching the Sooners tells us who the real coach actually is now. Tired of all the "Roy bus" and other cute slogans. Dabo should change it from "All in" to "Almost in".
