Depends on the sport. Football and basketball are head count sports (revenue generating) and provide full athletic scholarships. All others are equivalency sports where there is a set number of scholarships divided between each team. The number of scholarships allowed also vary in each sport from D1 to D2. NCAA D3 schools aren’t allowed to provide athletic scholarships so they provide generous academic scholarships.
We are just starting this journey with my youngest son and his desire to play college lacrosse. Colleges are just starting to contact him, these are exciting times. He will probably end up at a D3 school, the offers are much better and will be less out of pocket for dear old Dad. I told him that he can go to Clemson for his MBA. 😀

That is a great idea on paper. In reality, what a kid does with his or her NIL money is between them and their parents when it comes to tuition. The player gets the check, the W-2, pays the taxes and if there is money to pay tuition, there could not be a better use of the money. I am on the fringe of being politically incorrect here, but the socio economic status of baseball families is much different from other sports and I have no doubt many can foot at least some of the left over cost of tuition, room and board.

Agreed, especially at a public institution. Many of them were already paying $10-15 K for the higher level travel baseball seasons each year, know from experience.

Cost is a strong consideration regardless if the families are able to pay or not. There are many other good programs where the kids will get NIL to cover tuition and costs. That's what Clemson is competing with. If Clemson is your dream school and you want to go there no matter what? Then a scholarship probably doesn't matter that much. But if you like Clemson and you like several other programs and they are arranging for you to attend for free? That's a powerful inducement.

and give out "academic supplements" to cover the costs for their athletes to attend. Just another example of how the NCAA does not police an even playing field across the board. Who/how they came up with the 11.7 rule is an absolute pile of crap.

The scholarship limitations for college baseball are ridiculous of course , and Bakich knows what it will take to get these Tigers settled and back to Omaha.
If it's the NIL and transfer route then so be it.
I Would love to see the scholly limit pushed up to at least 20/team .

It's kinda brilliant leadership, the more I think about it.
Look, attending Clemson ain't cheap, especially for half the team coming from out-of-state.
If Clemson supporters & the top-rated funding arm in college athletics for the better part of a decade want to help contribute just over a million dollars annually to create full-tuition opportunities for roughly 30 baseball players, isn't that the very nature of what NIL as a rights-based issue is about?
If nothing else it can help expose why the 25% scholarship roster rule is outdated & worth reexamining, but that will take time by nature; in the meantime the importance of IPTAY continues to be unique across all of college athletics, & it's a tremendous advantage worth deliberately utilizing like this.

This is spot on. Like it or not, plenty of schools are supplementing NIL to help offset the academic costs, especailly for out of state athletes who don't get state sponsored academic funding. Certain states (Georgia, Fla, Cal, Texas) for example could probably fill a roster with all in state kids, but most can't. There are plenty of schools that are going this route and it's either play or get left behind. This day and age (NIL/Portal) is different. Hopefully, the transformation committee will add spots, perferably full 25, but at least 20.
