Dabo has had Danny Pearman assigned to scouting the portal for over a year. He's prepared to use it even if he's not a big fan. Can definitely see a DB, maybe an LB. I also expect us to be very active on the February signing day

Regardless of what other sports you play.
If you play baseball and football, your scholarship is football. Same for soccer or basketball.
I’m pretty sure that’s the NCAA rule.

Great article about the truths of the portal and the monumental task coaches have with numbers. Fans that yell about the portal just don't want to realize that players have until May 1 to leave. You tell me how a coach can recruit around that. The world is just different today and everything is about the individual not the nation, state, community or team. Football has change too.

on the February signing day if possible, even if it’s more 3 star guys and projects than we are used to. That way, Dabo can fill numbers to address those we have lost to the portal while still hopefully getting several years to develop players.
I still don’t see him relying heavily on the portal unless he absolutely has to, and I totally get that.

I think the same (and some people will cry about our average rating dropping); however, there is some balance between having a huge class that potentially limits space for future recruits and just filling some gaps. I wouldn’t be surprised if we sign 20 players. The question then will be whether Dabo brings in transfer portal players with some talent or just gives those scholarships to walk-ons. From Dabo’s comments it sounds like he’s still sensitive to bringing in a portal player, because he understands the pressure they might be under. If we don’t land Trevor Etienne and Andrew Paul, I hope we bring in a grad transfer running back to keep numbers available for future recruiting classes. Seems like we have good chances with some studs in the 2023 class.

What a lot of fans aren't seeing, or understanding, any top players in the portal, the NIL has allowed that avenue to become a bidding war for all of, not that many really good players in the portal. Yes, the school that can offer any top player in the portal the most cash, that's where they will go bc, cash takes away what was once a kids favorite school to play for. The NIL ended all thoughts of I really love Clemson, Furman, or Bama kids from the past, bc kids can now be bought by the highest bidder, IT'S A FACT!!!!

All the players in the portal are not Joe Burrow and Justin Fields. Those guys are exceptions and the norm are a bunch of 3 star guys that couldn’t cut it at their previous school so why is getting them, someone who has already failed, for them to come in and not play here either any better than recruiting a 3 star with a fresh start that hasn’t had bad habits and poor judgment drilled into them by another coach and developing them. That 3 star recruit is going to
Work harder and buy in faster because they are grateful for the opportunity. As soon as that portal guy sees it’s more of the same he’s back out the door Some of our best players have been juniors and seniors that were 3 stars that no one on tiger net wanted.

3* guys are used to being backups. Not the blue chippers, they don't have the patience and they want PT

Elias Ricks would not be a fit to come to Clemson since he would be looking for someone to guarantee him a starting spot (why he left LSU). That isn’t going to happen at Clemson. Dabo will tell the player regardless of stars he has to come in and work. Other teams will have more sugar coated messages to lure them in for sure.

Everyone in the portal isn’t a selfish underachiever who is afraid to work hard or be committed (not accusing you of saying this at all, it’s more of a general comment on the topic).

Having been a manager for a couple large companies, i can say this. When you bring someone in from outside, to fill an employment spot, they had better 1. Be better than anyone currently on staff 2. Fit the culture. There is nothing worse than bringing in someone who is a "bad apple". You can wreck an entire staff- their attitude, performance and , ultimately, lose control of the group. Dabo will probably have to use the portal to fill the vacancies caused by player and coaching attrition. Do we really believe that we're going to find 10 players that were better than the ones we lost AND fit in? With how many other schools doing the same thing? Get ready folks, this is going to be a bumpy ride.

Exactly. Let's not forget what Rencher and the Shipley said. The warts and bad apples. But there are some guys that hit the portal that we either offered initially or would have offered but at the time, didn't have a need or spot. But you got to strike fast because they don't last long.

Clemson has until February to fill the slots...Dabo is first trying to get threw the bowl game, then evaluate who is left and pick a DC/OC permanent coach...He has a 1000 other things to worry about right now...The players that left werent currently playing or contributing on the field anyways....

I have read every rumor there is out there. There is one saying Dabo is going to the Radiers and thats why he has not announced a DC, because he is leaving it to the next head coach. I have heard Dabo told those 3 IMG players to decommit since he is leaving. I heard Bresee, Henry, Murphy, Mukuba and others are going to Oklahoma after the bowl game. Its nice to be at the top of the College Football world and have so many rumors out there. If we were Illinois no one would care who was coming or going...I asked one question and no one answered it...If Dabo was leaving and he announced it to the AD and players/coaches...Why did TE or BV leave? They would have been the top picks to take over Clemson if Dabo was truly leaving...its all ratt poision...Dabo isnt going anywhere anytime soon!

Dabo is in his early 50s and in the prime of his head coaching career. He has formed the careers of former players, coaches, and administrators. On all counts he has excelled.
Now he is faced with new challenges. I think he gets up each day with a smile on his face and his mind fully engaged.
He is a uber competitor. Few of us can even imagine how he does what he does at his level.

Why is Drew swinney on scholarship? He sucks and I'm sure his parents can pay for his education. The db Venables should have never been on the team either. Wasn't for his dad he would never be at clemson not near as athletic enough to stay with top talent tight ends or receivers . If Dabo doesn't get in that portal immediately Clemson won't win it again anytime soon.

You're correct wrong choice of words he's just not a good enough player to contribute to a program that has reach the heights of Clemson. He doesn't need to be on scholarship, his people could pay for his education and place a WR that can actually contribute on scholarship. That's maximizing opportunity.

You are full of crap. Tyler Venables is a baller. He made some key plays for us this year. Very cerebral player and short area quickness and speed like Specter. He may start here next year if he doesn’t follow dad. But he will.

The problem is that it is just too easy to leave now and there will be jewels (aka Fields) and duds (most of ours who have left) but it is the new way and we have to reach a whole new equilibrium - don't forget how many player have left Bamma since the portal started (WAY more than we have), it just has not hit us in any meaningful way until this year. So why would Ajou go after receiving so much "praise" going back to the last spring game? Why such little playing time for him when he needed someone, anyone could could run a route and catch the ball and perhaps throw an occasional block? You can't answer that without being at practice and in the position room so it is just part of the new world order. I have no doubt we will get the ship righted but this reshuffling of the team may be an annual event, especially at the top. It just may be that seeing a team with much less talent but more time together (e.g. Pitt or Wake) being more competitive might be much less uncommon. Do you want a 3-star that will give you 5 years or a 5-star with an ego that will give you one or two and then disappear the first time there is any adversity? I don't know - Dabo will figure this out.

I want seasoned guys who for example(wr) can hold a block on a corner, catch a 3rd and 5 across the middle at the sticks, understands how to run a route in college so that he can be a part of a rotation and possibly start when we have a rash of injuries instead of rolling out a FR who is slow picking things up or having to start because of injuries or worse having to start someone who should never see the field other than scout team practice or when we play a FCS opponent(which we shouldn’t schedule to begin with)

The real A$$ kicker square in the nuts is this, the NCAA opened the portal without any kind of rules to rule over it, and with any collection of people doing anything, even with raking the neighbor hood yards, to taking out the trash, there has to be rules in place to keep everybody out the same yard with a rake in hand. AS usual, the NCAA has done a complete disservice to these college kids playing sports, and to every college that had a portal door that is left wide open without a door keeper!!!
