He inherited a weak defense. He did not recruit any of them and they have been lousy for two years now. I think he has to be given a chance to get his own players and work with them. Same for Matt Luke. The Oline guys have been here for 3-5 years and they have never been any good. Riley? He's now had three years, so he is more culpable. But I still wonder who is running the offense, him or CDS?

He inherited a pretty talented defense who unfortunately had already "cashed out" prior to the season. We lack exotic blitzes ie sending someone like Brown every other play from different spaces. While the paid are not moving their weight, allow someone who is earning it every single down to make an impact.

Both. You have to have the right dudes to run the scheme. We are too slow on the second and third levels...a coach can't fix that in half a season.

Then you adjust your scheme. Again, it goes back to the lemonade metaphor. You can hope to have the perfect makeup of guys every year, or you figure it out with what you have. It seems like his scheme is reliant on the right dudes, which means it's the dudes not Tom Allen.

this we have zero speed at these levels. Now the Dline is getting manhnandled also but there is no speed at all at LB and very little at safety either.

I think that Tom Allen was DC at Penn State for only one year (2024).
Before that, he was HC at Indiana University.
Was he ‘great’ at Penn State because of his coaching prowess, or was he ‘great’ because he inherited top notch personnel?
Clemson has better overall personnel in 2025 than we did in 2024, with the sole exception being our Safeties. (RJ Mickens never got enough love for his outstanding play at Safety while he was with us. We now have a severe case of ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder.’)
Yet, Clemson’s performance on defense YTD is clearly worse than it was in 2024.
There is one common denominator in Clemson’s defensive deterioration. Guess what it is?

Nobody on this staff is without blame, however Allen inherited pork chops mess and that’s going to take 2-3 seasons to fully clean up IMO

To much soft zone coverage and not enough attacking at the line of scrimmage. Hampton and Barnes, sometimes Sammy were the only ones blowing up plays at the line, that use to be a regular thing for us and guys flying around like their heads were on fire. Now its like a "We'll stand here and wait for you to come to us" type defense.

I’m not a fan of the scheme, but he deserves some time. I prefer an attacking defense that puts pressure on the QB and OL.

No, there’s something deeper going on with this program.
Everybody keeps pointing to the easiest, low hanging fruit. Defense isn’t playing well so it’s gotta be the defensive coordinator. Offense isn’t playing well go to be Riley. OL not playing well got to be Luke.
The whole team isn’t playing well. This isn’t one coach or one player. This is a program wide problem. What’s the poison that’s infiltrated this program? I have no clue
