Dabo's conviction

2

Nov 1, 2023, 8:44 AM

I believe Dabo's conviction to stick to a plan and his conviction to follow his principals led Clemson to multiple playoff appearances and Championships.
He famously created a roadmap binder with his ideas and observations years prior to him becoming a head coach and stuck to that plan, even making some tough decisions along the way. He had a strong principled philosophy which paid off.

However, conviction and stubbornness are blood relatives. While I trust Dabo's process and like the fact that he actually enjoys football, I think conviction turned, at some point, to stubbornness. His plan has likely become a bit too rigid, especially considering the changing landscape of CFB.

I think Dabo can adapt, but making philosophical changes is difficult, especially as we age. I(like Dabo) don't like the Transfer Portal, but it obviously is a necessary evil. I don't like the NIL as it is, but we have to play the hand dealt us, even if it means paying unaccomplished Freshmen. I like giving former players opportunities in coaching, but not to the detriment of the best candidates. I like that we reward walk-ons, but realize Hunter Renfrow types are few and far between. I really like that character matters in the program, but realize that sometimes too much harmony among players can douse the competitive fire.

Basically, Dabo needs to do some soul searching and discern if his principles are rooted in conviction or stubbornness.

Tigersense coming with the common sense

Somehow though, some think this is the thinking of a 1.5%er.

If he gets the results no one will care if he adapted or not. That is where the rubber meets the road…
