Thoughts on use of “we will rock you” for Hill entrance?

Sep 18, 2022, 10:46 AM

First game I have been to this year. If this the new thing ti fill the dead time as the team goes around on the bus?

On one hand it creates a cool atmosphere but it’s not “Clemson”. It’s just using a very popular song that could be played at any stadium. Not sure if I liked that being so intimately tied to our cornerstone tradition. It went on for quite a while to.

It’s the most old, stale and overused song in sports today.

It’s a good way to get a crowd pumped up. When that song starts, immediately people know to start stomping and clapping. Also, Queen is the greatest band of all time so I approve.

I hate it. Clemson has the best entrance in college football and does not need the WWE entrance. The lights need to be synced with Tiger Rag. Also, the transition from “We will rock you” to “The Orange Bowl March” is awkward. The stadium silence being broken with the bank playing the opening notes of the Orange Bowl march is the cue to get loud and ready for the team at the top of the hill.

Re: Thoughts on use of “we will rock you” for Hill entrance?

Sep 18, 2022, 10:59 AM

If the fans like it then fine but personally not a big fan of the song and it's 80's dated and it's not unique to Clemson. So many other schools like Penn State use it.

I didn't like they just turned the lights back up for the team entrance. Should have kept the orange glow and spot lit the running down the hill and band tunnel. Seemed anti climatic.

Great call InletTiger. Love the idea of this as approach music for when players board the buses until they get to the Rock. Would signal to everyone what’s coming. That nobody knows the tune is better, imo. You don’t have to know it. Throw up some best of Clemson football clips to that song and folks ain’t standing around waiting for dippin dots. They’re running to their seats. Maybe our band plays along with this so you feel the drums in the stadium.

For running down the Hill itself, I’m old school. No additional pre-produced music needed for the most exciting 25 seconds of college football.

I need to go see the use of WWRY by Queen but my kneejerk reaction is cringe. Va Tech using Sandman or Wiscy using Jump Around works because those schools have been using those since they came out. For us to try and go grab a jock jam for our entrance, which is famous in its own right, screams of trying too hard. Just my $0.02.

Re: Thoughts on use of “we will rock you” for Hill entrance?

Sep 18, 2022, 11:42 AM

This ^^^
Not exactly original is it?
Music is about crescendo and mood, especially with all the money spent on lights. While WWRY does have some of this element it’s cliche’. It’s a case of an adopted anthem rather than organic.
This songs name translates, Them as now, ForEVER

Also, WWRY doesn’t help our band, it’s just loud music pumped in over a PA. We need drum centric music and it’s no secret why drums were used in war. They could literally control troops tempo by their beats

When I first started the video I thought it was going to end up being a joke. I thought it was probably an ad for an automobile or something.

But, I can see it being a great intro like somebody said. It would have to be timed out, but the music could start as the players entered the busses. Have the Dabotron showing the players, then the bus ride, then the players exiting the busses and going to the rock. They could start the run down the hill as the last drum beat sounded.

I can think of only one pre-game ritual that would get the fans more fired up.?

Re: I like it, a lot.

Sep 18, 2022, 7:27 PM

Haha good one! Yes I would hope we could limit it to night game entrances like last night. Couldn’t be over done but if you notice the clap cadence begins and gets the crowd involved. The video on you tube the young people were just looking at their phones. No real excitement and the noise was coming from the PA. Even Dabo starting throwing his hands up for the crowd to get involved. This solves that and I really hope they do it. I share it every year but now that we have the “Daba Tron” it makes even more sense

…this looks pretty awesome.

The problem you face is you can NEVER overestimate the arrogance of the people in charge of this kind of stuff.

They’re typically the kind of people that NEVER take a second opinion, NEVER an alternate idea, or possibility.

It’s only their way or the highway.

Sad, but true.

I think you have a really good choice here though. assuming that the band is not some ISIS band or something like that.

When LSU changed their mid-field logo (right after that song came out) I said that was my favorite mid-field logo in all of football. I don't think Clemson should copy it. But, I wouldn't mind earing that song as they head from he bus to the hill to the field.

Face to face, out in the heat
Hanging tough, staying hungry
They stack the odds 'til we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

It's the eye of the tiger
It's the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he's watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Re: Thoughts on use of “we will rock you” for Hill entrance?

Sep 19, 2022, 11:18 AM

I was there and have a few thoughts, including some commentary from other fans around me, and want to bounce on a few of the player's comments too.

-To those who say "This isn't Clemson" I say, yes it is and there's reasons to continue to grow and change. This is a very techno-driven society and I didn't see anything I didn't like, only not enough and needs to be coordinated better.

-The timing was awful between the video, to the song, to the cannon fire, running down the hill and the band playing Tiger Rag. I trust this will get better in time. The 4th quarter video lead-in was a bit tighter to me, Joey Batson always makes me want to deadlift a train so this was a win. The lights were more coordinated. Practice makes perfect. Maybe a timer in the area right under the scoreboard so the team knows where they stand on timing.

-I went to the So Miss vs UT game in Neyland Stadium last year and came away very impressed with their pre-game and during game use of lights. To compare our orange washed stadium to theirs isn't fair, partly because they are completely enclosed and there's nowhere for the lights to escape.

-Shipley and others praised the show, compared it to the first time they ever attended a game and DJU even suggested the orange wash after every TD, something I think they should explore.

-Need better coordination between the band, DJ Sha and the game. And someone needs to have a kill switch on his feed for when he gets carried away.

the Hill entrance. Someone even suggested Phil Collins In the Air Tonight as a possibility. Not sure if I’m on board or not, but it would be better than We Will Rock You. And I do get it…”Rock” you, but just not right.

players. Everybody was extra engaged and pumped when they all arrived on the hill. I bet that song and the crowd involvement sounds pretty wicked in the visitors locker room and tunnel to boot. Prior to that it's been largely a lull while the buses pull around, so it was great to see our gameday crew try something like this. Nice signal as well for the fans lolling about that the hill run is coming and kickoff 5 minutes out, so get it in gear and get to your seats. Most important it didn't take anything away from the actual hill run and band - untouchable components of Saturdays in the Valley.

I liked the forward looking aspect also - we WILL rock you - leading up to touching the rock and laying waste to our opponent to follow.

As far as song choice, you're never going to please everyone, and most are familiar with it.

Yeah. It was pretty bomb.

A bit of a double entendre with We will Rock you and rubbing the Rock. Maybe at the year ending pizza party they can let it play through with We are the Champions, although I never really liked that song.

Connecting Howard’s rock to the music - works for me.

Agree that “We Will Rock You” is over used. We need some suggestions. Nominate something. Personally I would like to hear “Ride of the Valkerie” or “Carmina Burana” ( also overused ) but we need a connection to the music that these don’t necessarily have.

So I loved the entrance this weekend!

It was fun! I However, I do agree with some of y’all. I would have preferred a different song. I understand why that one was chosen. Clearly everyone knows it but it doesn’t feel like “Clemson”.
So maybe they’ll be a new one next weekend for NC State. We’ll see

The video of the entrance was good

I wasn't actually there, but there is no reason that "We Will Rock You" can't eventually feel like it's part of Clemson. But...it's probably going to take a while. After all, VT stole Mariano Rivera's walk-up song and made it theirs because they were jumping to it.
