CCR List

2

Jul 10, 2023, 7:00 AM

Hey TNet fam, I could use some help with something. I’ll be teaching a new class, College & Career Readiness (CCR hereafter), at the local middle school this fall. As part of my prep, I’m compiling a list of both!

If you could spare the time, reply to this with answers to one or both of the following questions:
-What is your current job? (If you’ve worked other jobs, list those) If retired, what jobs have you worked?
-Did your career field require a college education? If so, list all of your completed degrees.

The goal is to expose my CCR students to different career fields to give them options to explore. I’ll see 6-8 grade students on an A/B schedule in 2 semesters, so the class will even have a collegiate feel to it at times. TIA for the help!

Thought this would be a Creedence Clearwater Revival playlist

But as a school psychologist, I will begin my 50th year on the job - won't let me retire due to extreme shortage so finding a job will be no problem since they find you. After reaching years to retire, school districts are willing to contract with you for any number of days you desire. Need Master's degree plus 30 hours for independent practice.

Credence Clearwater Revival might not have been the topic of the post, but they’re definitely going on my classroom rock playlist!

I was gonna say Fortunate Son was #1 for me

Every time I hear it I think of that scene from Forest Gump with choppers flying over the marsh in ‘nam.

which is a funny use of that song since it is an anti-war song and Forest/Bubba were not fortunate sons

That’s what made it such a powerful image for me

It underscored how the unfortunate ones, those like Bubba and Forest who did not come from powerful families, seemed to also be the ones who most often ended up getting drafted and sent to fight. I didn’t live through that era so I can’t speak to it, but the song and the movie were in lock step with their messages.

Financial Planning and Analysis - FP&A
Requires a college degree and increasingly an MBA today. The focus has moved more towards data modeling so a technical background in data science would be something to think about when planning your educational program.

Good luck with this challenge:

I received a degree from the school of forestry in 1964 and have worked in that field until retirement in 2006. I found the curriculum in Forestry to be very difficult so I would recommend it only to those students who enjoy working outside and are good science and math students. This profession, like most others has changed for the better with the computer age technology now available. I wish I could start over now!!!

Todays students are so far ahead of my generation that it’s difficult to compare them. My grandson just finished his first year of college and made the chancellors list. He tells me that he studied very little. Apparently todays students rarely go to class. If I could have taken my test from my room I’m sure my grades would have been better!

Keep us posted on your success with this venture. Todays students will make it fun for you.

I am two years out of the classroom teaching middle grades 8th grade math. Before teaching, I was an IT analyst.

Please highlight some careers that do not require a college degree. Examples would be hair, cooking, automotive, and welding. Also, your students have never been exposed to resumes and interviewing. Have a job fair and mock interviews.

You can make a HUGE impact on your students with this class. Reach out to teachers that are already teaching this class for ideas and help. You should not have to reinvent the wheel. Looks online for ideas. Teachers pay teachers may have some resources. Good Luck!

Hair and welding may not require "degrees" but you have to get extensive certification.

For reference - to get certified to cut hair you have to go through 1400 - 1600 hours of training compared to 700 for a police office.

just goes to show it is easier to train to cut ### than it is to cut hair....

I am on the younger side of this board (30).

I can honestly say that I have never once been asked my Clemson GPA (thankfully) by any of the places I have ever worked for Sales or Account Management roles.

The one thing that has always stood out to the people interviewing me were the jobs I carried through HS and College.

Generally, it seems that little piece of paper means less and less these days. I mean hell, members of Congress are being exposed as having 100% false resumes and nothing happens to them. If you can prove you can do the job - education does not matter (mostly).

I have worked in international logistics, export operations for about 17 years now. Not one hiring person has asked if I had a degree, some of the job postings will mention it. If you can get your foot in the door you can usually get pretty far without one but some further certifications are definitely a requirement. From my experience the industry eats its young so I would not recommend it to anyone.

Currently working for a land planning, Civil engineering and landscape architecture firm. I graduated with degrees in PRTM (86) and Landscape Architecture (95). I was fortunate that I worked as a golf course architect for around 11 years before moving into my current position.

As a side gig, I help a friend out surveying. He is a licensed surveyor and told me that the average age of a surveyor in the US was 60. Like a lot of professions labeled as "trades", there are shortages everywhere. HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc. A Four year institution isn't always the path.

The challenge you have taken on is huge and commendable. What I have seen as my children were making their way through the public school system is that the system is teaching to the test. There are no other reasons for me to learn this other than to pass the test. As a result, they are uninspired. And why should they be? Why to I need to learn the answers when I can find them on the device I hold in my hand? They are being taught math. Why am I learning math? Where's the application? My son complained about learning geometry. "Who uses geometry", he asked. I do. Everyday. Granted the computer does a lot for me. But I still have to understand what it means.

Hopefully this class will help connect those dots. Sorry for the rant on education. Good luck!
