This time tonight 40 years ago we were celebrating

Who remembers the sheer jubilation? I remember at the beginning of the broadcast, NBC and the announcers had a little piece about where Clemson was. Then to be nice, they showed where the University of Nebraska was. Anyway, good times.

Was there - surreal. It was like David taking down Goliath, except Clemson had prepared itself to be there.

I was 14 and watching the game with family in NYC (they thought Nebraska had it in the bag).Still have my copy of SI .
A great time to repost this especially after a good bowl win !
Sports Illustrated January 11 1982
Perry Tuttle said "You know at 7:30 this morning Homer came to my room and woke me up and said "I'm so nervous I can't sleep. "I said "Homer, those big farm boys are going to kill you." but in the game he was so confident.
It was clear that the Huskers had come up against more of a team than they had expected. "I could tell they were taking us lightly." said Jeff Davis. "Just being around them during the week , around town, at discos, the hotels, the stadium. You could feel it, as if they were saying "We're from the Big 8 and you boys aren't of the same caliber."
There was still 5:24 remaining on the clock when Clemson took over the ball, and so far in the quarter its two possessions had gained a total of 12 yards. Now Jordan kept the ball safely on the ground, in the hands of Jeff McCall and Chuck McSwain, who made 2 first downs as Clemson gobbled up all but six seconds of the time remaining. Those six seconds were counted down by the orange -clad crowd-loudly ,of course -and then it was over. No one had to wait for any pollsters to vote. The Tigers had made their "stupid" dream a reality.

I was at the game and truly loved the experience. Some folks were shooting fireworks out of their windows into DuPont Plaza. Enjoyed the whole experience.

I was at the Orange Bowl (also Tampa and Santa Clara)! Before the game I ran into GG Galloway who played DLine for us in the 70's and asked him how he thought we'd do. He said we were going to win because Nebraska couldn't handle our DLine. I said they had one of the best OLines with Outland winner Dave Rimington (2 times) and (future Outland winner) Dean Steinkuhler. He said our strength and flexibility training under George Dostal was superior to anybodies! G G was right! When we lined up with Perry and Devane in the middle they didn't know what to do!

That was the first time I was allowed to stay up past midnight. I watched with my Dad (‘59 alumni) and had no idea just how special that win was as a youngster. I think I’ll rewatch the game and reminisce. Watching it makes me miss my Dad.

...and we watched on a 19" tube TV in our apartment. Cable TV was a new thing then so we didn't have to worry about antenna reception.
We went to downtown Clemson after the win and it was crazy. I would do about anything to relive that day.

I do! I was there and have saved the SI, the game program, and the ticket stub. I was managing a project in South Florida and was comped 6 tickets by a supplier. One of my guest dropped out so I also ended up having 1 unused ticket. I've been a Tiger for a long time.

Was there and got to talk to William Perry years later. He said him and Devine were determined to show the Huskers the REAL CLEMSON. Perry said all week Nebraska showed little respect and they thought they had it in the bag because they were Nebraska. Perry then said that Nebraska didn’t know what to do when him and Devine pushed them around. They by the end of the game had taken the fight out of them. Then the rest was history………
Go Tigers!!!!!!!!

find it humorous that there is now an award named after Dave Rimington, the Nebraska center. It is given to the "best" center in the land each year. Perry and Devane used and abused Rimington all night.

Was there with my roommate and a few friends. Was my sophomore year. 40 years ago this morning was walking into team hotel when Coach Ford was walking out. Took the time for us to get pictures with him. I dropped those pictures off at Jersey several weeks later and left them, asking for Coach Ford to sign them. His secretary called me back about a week later and said she had my pics for me. A proud moment. Still have one of my roommate and I with him on my wall.

I was there and remember parking in someone’s yard that was very close to the stadium. Had several Nebraska fans asking where was Clemson? I remember asking them afterward how far back was it to Lincoln. Also have a vivid memory of a buddy wearing a Clemson styrofoam #1 on each hand , it was priceless! Got back to hotel in Fort Lauderdale close to dawn . 7 of us in one room .

Dec 81 grad then headed to Miami...

Met a group in Orangeburg and we headed down in a van with a couple seats. The rest of us sat on coolers or on the floor. Seat belts?
We had a great time and spent what little money we had (cheap hotel, a bar or two or three..). Upper deck seats in the real Orange Bowl.
Biggest (only) regret. We had an opportunity to get some free tickets to the Miami-San Diego NFL playoff game the next day (famous overtime game). Our heads were throbbing and we declined. Big mistake.

and one of my friends had a big party. Much alcohol was consumed. I actually was legal to drink beer...the age for beer and wine was 18 at the time, but you had to be 21 to buy liquor.
Anyway, after the game, for some reason I don't remember, we all went downtown in my small lowcountry hometown.
Most of our parents were there...I don't know why they were there either, but they were as hammered as the kids, so no one got in trouble. Thankfully no DUIs either as there was a good bit of unwise driving around town. The whole town celebrated.

Although I didn't get to be there in person, I celebrated every minute watching it on TV with my sweet mother who had just lost her precious 51-year old husband to a sudden unexpected heart attack on 12/26. There was no way I was going to let her grieve for a couple of weeks totally alone, so I took two weeks off from work (in Richmond, VA at that time) and stayed with her in her Easley home and we watched and enjoyed every single minute of that game on her little TV! We reminisced often during the game about what Dad would have said about said play. It was such a lovely bonding time for us.

Freshman in college that year. Watched the game with my brother, mom and dad at home in a little town in upstate SC. Knew people who made the 12 hour drive. Was amazed at the domination of our interior defensive line. Perry and Devane were amazing.
Many years later living in Miami beach I would enjoy driving by the old Orange Bowl stadium imagining what it must have been like for so many great people from SC to watch their Clemson Tigers bring home a national championship in person.
Constant between 1981, 2016, 2018 1. Dominant interior defensive line play 2. NFL quality WR to make game winning plays 3. Tough, hard core head coach from Alabama who knows how to build and coach a team to be tough enough and deep enough to win it all. 4. QB play with toughness and will to win it all.

Best night of back in my early 20’s. We shout the 12345 cadence all night everywhere we went and passed out $2 Clemson Bills. What a game such electricity and energy in the stadium mostly Clemson Orange.
A night I will never forget that experience.

I was a sophomore at Clemson and couldn’t afford a trip to Miami so I watched it at a bar in Charleston with some HS friends. I played quite a bit of basketball at Fike with some of the football players so it was really great to watch them just destroy Nebraska. I kept my Clemson Orange Soda cans until they corroded and leaked everywhere. We watched our DVD of that game at the beginning of this season and had to laugh at the announcers going into the coaches box and broadcasting their conversations and telling everyone what the next play would be. Classic!
