This Should Be an Interesting Place After the First CFP Rankings Tonight

Nov 1, 2022, 9:57 AM

Dabo says it well, "Our goal is not to be in the national championship. That's not on our goal board. Our goals are to win the opener, to win the division, to win our state championship, to win the ACC, and to win the closer. That's our goal. Anything that happens outside of that is out of our control."

CLEM
TCU
BAMA

Agree. TN has the best win by beating Bama:

1. Tennessee
2. UGA
3. OSU
4. Michigan

I was all in with the PO system when it existed on paper.

Nov 1, 2022, 10:20 AM [ in reply to always fun pointing out the holes in their subjective ]

When the first poll of the first season was published I had to shift down to 1st gear, let off the gas and tickle the brake a bit. I though all the people saying it wouldn't change anything from the BCS era were most likely correct.

As the polls graduated toward the end of the season I began to return to my original confidence in the PO system. I don't always agree with their final selections but from the first PO game throughout the entire era I believe the best team won the NC Trophy.

That was the goal of the system. If there's a flaw it's that the early PO rankings reflect the hyped up preseason polls. That hype dwindles to almost having no effect on the PO seeding.

My only complaint now is that they move the seeds up and down to avoid two SEC teams meeting in the first round (once or twice now) and Clemson seems to play as far away from Clemson in the first round as is possible. I swear, if we were ranked #1 and the appeared to be set to play in Atlanta they'd drop us to #2 and put us in the first round game that was played on the freaking moon or Uranus.

oh..i was the opposite. I went on record many times

Nov 1, 2022, 10:29 AM

and said this isn't any better.. just lets 2 more teams in. Sam old polls, excel sheets, subjectivity as we have always had.

Going to 12 will not change anything either.. still will be subjective.

ONLY way to take the subjectivity out of the playoff is to remove it all together. Conference champs go to the playoff.. end of debate. No money in that though.

In the 12-team model, conference champs DO go to the playoffs.

12 seems like a cluster with more mismatched games, but it could end up great. Just seems out of 4 teams there is always a blowout in the semis.

This is my major gripe with the CFP too -- if you have two from the same conference, they should NOT play for the championship in a 4-team playoff.

Makes absolutely no sense to me how they try to rationalize this on TV as "oh, you can't have the 2 conference teams play each other first because they already played"....WHAT??!? Then why are they both in the CFP??!?

That needs to be done away with yesterday. If you wanna invite two teams from the same conference, make'em play in the first round.

Don't care if they should be #1 and #2, this ain't March Madness where they go through 4-5 rounds of play and just happen to match up at the end (much more stomach-able).

Nah...tonight's ranking are just a starting point...

Nov 1, 2022, 10:02 AM

A lot will change over the next five weeks.

Regardless of what the first CFP rankings look like, Clemson's path to the CFP is simple. Win and you're in.

Yep… and if we don’t win this weekend it is moot

Nov 1, 2022, 10:20 AM

So stay focused on ND and take care of bidness. Leave no doubt!

JUST WIN!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'd be ok if we're ranked 7 or 8.

Nov 1, 2022, 10:10 AM

The committee has shown the propensity to move teams up and down with accurate assessments as the playoff ranking progress. I'd be more proud if we were ranked #1 but there's really only one way to go at that rank.

Re: I'd be ok if we're ranked 7 or 8.

Nov 1, 2022, 10:51 AM

I expect between 4 and 6. No way the committee ranks a 1 loss Bama team (with no significant wins) ahead of an undefeated Clemson team with 3 Top 25 wins (albeit wins somewhat tarnished with the outcomes this past weekend).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We should also be ranked ahead of Michigan***

Re: This Should an Interesting Place After the First CFP Rankings Tonight

Nov 1, 2022, 10:59 AM

Don't really worry about the rankings because all these teams won't be undefeated in the end. Just for fu though here is my guess. This is not my top 6 but what I think the CFP committee will come up with.

1-Tennessee
2-Georgia
3-THE Ocryo State
4-Michigan
5-Clemson
6-TCU

I have zero problem with this right now how they stand ranking. Don't get too emotional if TCU is ahead of us either. This ranking WILL change every week from here on out. There won't be much to debate after all conference champs are crowned.

Re: This Should an Interesting Place After the First CFP Rankings Tonight

Nov 1, 2022, 11:00 AM

I kinda hope we are in 5/6th after the rankings come out. Doubters always light a fire in our team.

And after this weekend’s games, at least one Top 4 is guaranteed to be on the outside looking in. And I don’t think it’ll be Clemson after this weekend’s beat down of ND.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That can be a slippery slope considering the CFP committee..

Nov 1, 2022, 11:03 AM

are in fact "some pollsters"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most of the CFP committee members...

Nov 1, 2022, 11:51 AM

are either current AD's or former players/coaches. The one exception is Kelley Whiteside. She is a former national college football writer.

correct......they are still "pollsters".......

Nov 1, 2022, 11:54 AM

in the CFP rankings.......the ones that actually matter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The AP pollsters are mainly SIDs who proxy for their coaches

Nov 1, 2022, 4:03 PM

They simply tick off choices each week on behalf of their head coach, with all their individual biases in tact. They do not give it a whole lot of thought. They have a real job to do.

The CFP committee as a group is able to view everything in a much more objective way. They are totally focused on the job at hand. They actually watch film, analyze the data, and have extended, substantive discussion and debate.

The CFP May be a “poll” by some definition, but they are nothing like the other polls.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty sure you were talking about the coaches poll

Nov 1, 2022, 10:43 PM

But yeah the CFP committee uses more actual data than pollsters. Much more "scientific".

Pheeble was not actually correct, but what else is new?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We'll be #5, probably. If so, I don't see anyone having an issue with that.

Nov 1, 2022, 4:05 PM

If we beat ND then we'll be #4 on November 8th.

My guess.

Re: This Should Be an Interesting Place After the First CFP Rankings Tonight

Nov 1, 2022, 4:17 PM

I have us at 6 or 7.

Tenn
GA (or flipped either way don’t matter I wouldn’t think)
OSU

Now I struggle with who is at 4. Will probably be Michigan but they would not be considered in my top 4. Would not be surprised to see a 1 loss Bama team ahead of Clemson and TCU.

I’m sure they are salivating with the idea of 2 B1G and 2 SEC teams.
