legitimate (16 team) playoff in college football. We have a system of choosing a championship game that often rewards losing and punishes wins. And 2/3 of that system is based on a human polling system so corrupted with politics that they are now (like last year) choosing a NCG based on who they want to see play and not who they believe the two best teams are.

We have an Oregon team who lost by a FG in OT to a very good Stanford team behind UF who has struggled against TERRIBLE non-conference competition at home all year. I'd take Oregon over Bama, UGAy, and UF any day of the week.

Does anyone sit at home in April and say "hmmm, you know, UK may not have been the best team last year... if only UConn had been voted higher in the polls then we'd really know."

The only way to take the politics, counter-intuitive computer-formulated minutiae, and doubt out of the championship is to let it be decided the right way--on the field.

ksu gets killed and still ranked ahead of fsu/clem

I wonder, if oregon would have lost last week and bama this week, where would they be ranked?

I think 8 is the magic number if we can decide on 8 16 team conferences, the conference title games yielding 4 teams.

did ya forget all the teams that complain about...

being left out of the bball tournament? There are a bunch every year that seem to deserve to get in, but they don't either because some team that didn't have a great year won their conference tournament or because they're not in a big conference.

Now, while the playoffs do allow things to be decided on the field, who gets to decide it on the field is still decided by the rankings. With today's system, there's controversy between a few teams who have had great years and are either undefeated or have only one loss. There usually aren't many of those teams, but there are always quite a few with 2-3 losses who might be worthy of a top 10-16 ranking. The playoff will tell us something about the teams who make it into the playoffs, but it won't eliminate the controversy; in fact, there may be even more controversy.

And when we get to the playoffs, give the teams 2 wks between games, for healing purposes, and film study, and in so doing, we could have college football well into the spring. LOL :)
GO TIGERS!!!

No one who's ever been left out of a 64-team tourney would

have won it all and no one who gets left out of a 16-team college football playoff would win it either.

Obviously no matter how many teams get into a playoff that first team out is going to complain but that doesn't mean we should stick with this idiotic system.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I guess I don't think any system will be perfect...

Nov 19, 2012, 12:08 AM

at least not according to everybody. The BCS seems idiotic because there are 117 teams who much be ranked in order to decide who gets to play for the national championship. The BCS, at least, ensures that the number 1 and 2 teams play eachother at the end of they year. But the real problem is the rankings and the fact that you simply couldn't extend the season in order to let enough teams participate to have a true playoff.

It's probably true that a team left out of the field of 64 wouldn't win it all, but remember that many of those teams are "at-large" types that would be seeded between 7 and 12. Those are usually pretty good teams, but they're not teams ranked in the top 25. In the football playoff, all the teams would be top 25 teams. There's not usually much difference between teams ranked 10-16 in terms of record. and there will be a number of teams with similar records and resumes to 13-16 ranked teams. Right now, 13- 16 are: OU, Nebraska, Ore St, and Texas. 17- 21 are UCLA, Rutgers, Michigan, Louisville and OSU. I think any of those teams could, on a given day, beat most of the top 5 teams (especially UGa, Florida, ND, or KSt.). And if those teams have no chance, then why not just trust the rankings like we already do?

The point is, there will be just as much, if not more, controversy as there was before. The only difference is, teams with 2-3 losses will now have a chance at a natty champ instead of being completely left out.

I don't want to remove controversy, I want to remove DOUBT.

Nov 19, 2012, 12:12 AM

The BCS matches up 2 teams who are ranked 1 and 2--it DOES NOT necessarily match up the 2 best teams. A playoff will ALWAYS matchup two teams that earned the spot as the last two standing.

Pure sport. No doubt. No debate.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

maybe so...

Nov 19, 2012, 12:17 AM

but I think what you said about those teams that are the last ones in or the last ones out not being expected to win will make some people feel like the great regular seasons the teams in the top 2 spots had are less important. All you have to do is look at who wins the NFL playoffs (or the MLB playoffs0 to see that the eventual champion is not always the team who was best during the regular season.

Agreed. SEC teams non conference schedules are a joke. I hope we make the whole SEC look overrated with a 50 point blowout!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU may do that... I don't see us doing it

Nov 19, 2012, 12:10 AM

I'm hoping we win with a final score of something like 45- 28.
