Agree, Kevin Mack. Emory Smith was real good until his back injury.

Guessing you are kid of the 80s like me. Tracy Johnson and Chris Lancaster were beasts. When I played in the yard I wasn't trying to be Flagler or Allen. I wanted to be Johnson or Lancaster and blow someone up one play and then take it to the house for a touchdown the next play.

I've got to say Buddy Go. Maybe technically a RB but came in and was always listed as a fullback.
Hard to disagree with Mack but Ray Yauger was pretty darn good too.

Was Yauger FB or RB? I remember seeing him carrying 3 ##### on his back for 15 yds in WB stadium.

Yauguh was built more like a fullback. Fullbacks playing with those two were Benny Michael and Rick Medlin among others.

Regarding Buddy Gore & Ray Yauger Consideration
May 31, 2022, 1:29 PM
[ in reply to Re: This question is for us old timers………. ] |
|
Dear Clemgalaways, Neither Buddy Gore nor Ray Yauger were Fullbacks--both were running backs that were in an active rotation between the two that was only interrupted when one or the other was injured. it also was discontinued because Buddy Gore graduated a year ahead of Ray Yauger. You may have been confused because they both were occasionally in the same backfield.

No confusion here. Why I prefaced the way I did. Imo, both played more like fullback and if I'm not mistaken, the old programs always listed BG as a FB. Thank you for the reply.
But I do get confused a lot. The ole mind is slowly tightening up. I remember the 60s pretty good from time to time but don't ask what I did last week... Lol

I shined Buddy Gores shoes. I was a freshman rat, and I had to do what he said. He was a super nice guy, and one of our best on the field.

Kevin Mack was definitely a good one. I was a big fan of the full back that proceeded Mack, Marvin Sims, from '77-'79. Their career numbers were every similar at Clemson except Mack had more TD's. Sims has a spot in my heart because he played a big role in the revival of Clemson football. Both are very good choices.

Sure would have liked to see Fred Cone play.
I could make an argument for Jeff McCall too. He was instrumental to our success. Would love to have one of you FB experts break down his film. He did little things that made the team click... But imo never quite got the recognition he deserved. Jmho
They're all great because they all played for Clemson.

interesting tidbit on Mack is that he scored on his last carry of his last home game as a Tiger against Maryland in the world record balloon release game. (if my memory is correct)

The first two I thought of were Marvin Sims and Tracey Johnson, but would need to look at the stats of them and Kevin Mack. Mack had a a heck of a NFL career.

Mack is a close 2nd but I would vote for Fred Cone. Most TigerNetters will not know about him and his prowess but those in the 50's will recall him and Bobby Gage/Billy Hair as an awesome Clemson singlewing offense. He helped the Tigers as a coach after a successful NFL career, as well.

Dang 72' Tiger! We ain't old timers. We're just hitting our prime. I'm a 74' man. These youngsters today got it made - swimming pools, gourmet food, and women. Heck, just to see a woman in our day in Harcombe was a gift from above. $6.00 for a date ticket and sit where you want was wonderful. Then to Dan's for a burger and a brew from the Red Carpet topped it all off.

In 1968 i snuck a girl into my room in #10 dorm during a dance weekend. I dropped by there to take a shower and pick up some clothes for our next motel la de da night. (The first night was a success.) I was afraid I was going to get caught and expelled. We were only there about 30 minutes. Now boys and girls have co-ed dorms and regular orgies I guess. Makes we wonder if I should start all over again. ??????
