The Seminoles played without their top two quarterbacks, top two running backs, top two receivers, starting tight end, three starting defensive linemen, two of three starting linebackers and three starting defensive backs. They were down 29 scholarship players in all.
Thank you NCAA !!! This is what happens when you try and be friends to your children, rather than parents.

We can all disagree on who broke it and how it must be fixed.
But, we should all agree that the system, as it currently stand on 12/31/23 is broken and in desperate need of a major overhaul.

Why would it be any different? Worst of all, the opt-outs left their teammates hung out to dry.

for a single year without any expectation that you can keep them a second year without even more money. It used to be that high school players worked hard to "earn" an offer to get a free ride to a college education. And in my day that was worth a fraction of what college costs today ( big fraction). When did getting that scholarship stop being adequate compensation? I don't see anything wrong with "true NIL" in which a player is paid for promotions or autographs in a "free market" BUT TO PAY THEM UPFRONT BEFORE THEIR NAME AND IMAGE HAS PUT THEM IN A POSITION TO SAY THEY HAVE ACTUALLY EARNED ANYTHING IS BEYOND THE DEFINITION. The only free market here is "pay-for-play" without a contract that makes them actually commit to stay on the field for the team they are paid to go to in the first place. Pro sports require that .

"Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate," Kavanaugh wrote. Tuition, room and board, books, fees, etc.
Folks who are saddled with $100k+ in college debt would argue that those athletes have been getting paid well.
Not to mention that most never would have been accepted to those schools based on academic merit.

There were two documents provided by the SCOTUS in the case that effectively ended the NCAA model.
The first was provided by Justice Gorsuch. The second (more damaging) was provided by Justice Kavanaugh.
I’m not sure why you are referring to Chief Justice Roberts.

Well if that is the case then go ahead and call it professional sports “ work” and call them employees and let them pay Taxes on the money they make including the scholarships they receive . Let them pay for their own medical and healthcare and room and board. The judge maybe right but if He is college sports are finished.

I think we also have to remember that NCAA athletics are developmental leagues. Most colleges don't make a profit like professional sports teams. Football makes money that supports many sports that most other sports could not exist without. Some of those sports are mandated by Title 9. So it's not as simple as the business model for the Dallas cowboys. Most players don't make the pro leagues. But some are multi-millionaires due to college football . For example Grady Jarrett. Just saying it's not as simple as even the Supreme Court may suggest.

Is it broke? As fan, it's not what most would like it to be. We all want the "old days". But college athletics began as two alumni bases wanting to watch their schools students compete against each other. Then someone realized outside people would pay money to see it also on TV. And here we are.
And until enough viewers are lost and ad revenue falls, the monetization efforts will continue to evolve to maximize that revenue.

Funny how 'woke' suddenly includes conservative Supreme Court judges. A unanimous 9-0 decision seems more like common sense than a political stance. Maybe we should just call it a win for the athletes, regardless of our bedtime reading preferences.

Let's remember that most players do not opt out of bowl games. Everyone plays. It's only a handful that will get drafted by the NFL. Furthermore, if you read the wall Street journal article from yesterday, playing college pays more than a 3rd round pick in the draft.
So, don't get to upset about 1 percent of the players not playing.

Yes - I've watched my father fall into this pattern over the last year or so. Not sure how we got here, but whoever stated, "When something isn't liked, it's woke" hit the nail on the head. Seems terms and definitions are easily hijacked/conflated/misused these days. Personally (and sadly), whatever "this" is, continues to gradually estrange me from my dad as if something has colored his view of reality - all situations must be politically rooted. I'm not happy with how the CFB ship is sailing right now - but, with some time, it will course correct. No blame as this diversion from what we knew was largely inevitable.
