This is the problem from a 30,000 foot view

Dabo is a man of faith and principles. He is extremely loyal. He recruits players that are excellent athletes but are also moldable. His goal is to win at the highest level while also develop and mold these boys into men over a 3 to 5 year period. To have them leave as graduates with a future beyond football. This model has obviously worked well for over 10 years and I love and admire him for it all.
Enter NIL and the portal. These are monumental changes in the college football world. Take this as an example. Keon Coleman hits the portal and FSU picks him up. He is a great athlete and helps their team beat us and others. However, Coleman is there for playing time, NIL money, and hopefully a path to the NFL. He is not there to get an FSU degree or because he’s always dreamed of playing for FSU.
Would Coleman have helps us? Absolutely! But he would be taking the spot of a guy that has been here several years. Stepping in front and cutting the line. This goes against everything Dabo stands for and is in direct conflict with his principles and loyalty.
After this season, he will be forced to make changes because his primary responsibility to Clemson is to win football games. It’s going to be interesting to watch it play out.

So you are basically saying we will have to make a change at Head Coach for Clemson to enter the modern era of college football? I don’t see Dabo changing his philosophy.

I’m saying that if he can’t reconcile his philosophy with the changes in college football, he will remove himself before he stains what he has accomplished with a string of mediocre seasons. I can’t imagine Clemson ever firing him.

I’ve heard that said but I’d like to read his quote in context. Dabo is too competitive to stay in a job where he can’t win. He got enough money.

When you are driven by being competitive, you never have enough money. I don't see Dabo giving up 64 million dollars that his children or grand children could use. If he felt like like he had enough money, he never would have wanted a long 11 million contact with a 64 million buyout.

We hired a coach to win football games. Dabo was doing that while doing the other and that was fine. Now that we are not winning it is NOT fine. I hope he can find a way to balance it but college football is now NFL light. I hated it when it started happening. Dabo said he was going to quit when it became this. Knowing all of this it shocks me we made his buyout so long and large. One fatal mistake after another

A portal player coming in should not hurt the young ones you still have to mold anyway. They're young...they will play still...and they will still learn. Use the portal if you have obvious immediate needs in your position depths. Dabo can still have his way but he just has to balance it a little differently to compete with the competition. He also has to help himself with some of these coaching misses.

I respect that Dabo considers a scholarship for 4 years and not a 1 year renewable contract. However, he does not owe any of these kids playing time. One kid's playing time should be more important than his responsibility to win for the other 84 scholarship players? Is he supposed to steer away from a recruit, because he might take playing time from an upper classman?

Dabo does not need to take anyone's scholarship in order to use the portal. He simply needs to manage the ones that he gets every year from graduating players or ones that choose to leave for whatever reason. It is a choice, for the most part, to not have scholarships after NSD that could be used on transfers and none of it has anything to do with Dabo's responsibility to ensure playing time for anyone.

One thing all our coaches since Danny had in common.

Oct 30, 2023, 3:22 PM [ in reply to He is paid to win. That is all.*** ]

Integrity. Not that Danny lacked integrity but he got us in trouble with his loose recruiting practices. Since then we've barely heard a word from the NCAA.

So no, from Hatfield to Dabo integrity has always been a must for a head coach.

Re: This is the problem from a 30,000 foot view

Oct 29, 2023, 3:47 PM

Question?

How is that different from an elite true freshman coming in and beating out a senior for the starting spot? Plus, Dabo insist that we made an all out effort to get a few lineman. So why would they do that if he had those feelings?

I think Dabo will come around at the end of this season. As admirable as it is and as much credit that he gets on building great young men, winning is still the number 1 goal. And we're not talking about cheating. Or buying a whole freshman class. We're talking about probably 2-5 players each year.

Anyway, respect your opinion fellow tiger. There is mine.

The model that Dabo used to build his program at Clemson was a perfect fit for the time and place.

Re: This is the problem from a 30,000 foot view

Oct 29, 2023, 4:44 PM

Excellent post. I think the money has poisoned the locker room. Not just ours, but everyone's. These kids are working themselves half to death and sacrificing their bodies and health so like 3 guys can get to be teenage millionaires and most of the rest get diddly. That is not a recipe for strong team efforts. It is a recipe for disaster. Dabo's well-intentioned loyalty to upper classmen and kids who do the work is going to be viewed by the talented underclassmen as hitting them in their wallets on some level.

It is not really fixable, but salary caps and revenue sharing would help. I am not sure Dabo's philosophy can survive in the current environment anywhere except perhaps the high school level.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But that highlights the issue for Coach Swinney....

1

Oct 30, 2023, 8:42 AM

he only wants guys that WANT to be Clemson men. He looks at bringing in portal players as basically "hiring mercenaries" with no loyalty to him or the program. That is where I think he struggles the most with the portal. Other coaches do not have that issue at all.

Re: This is the problem from a 30,000 foot view

Oct 30, 2023, 3:10 PM

The fail in your logic is has been shown so many times over the years.

Sammy Watkins came in and took a veteran's spot.

Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence did the same.

Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence did the same.

Tyler Davis did the same.

Peter Woods, T'J' Parker and Tyler Brown have done the same this year.

Dabo isn't against replacing veterans with new players.

Dabo couldn't take Keon Coleman last year because he had 88 players on scholarship when spring practice ended and had to turn that into 85 by August.

The only difference between recruiting a high school player and a portal player is how long they have left to be on your roster. For that reason, Dabo has said he will only bring in portal players that are potential starters (which is opposite of what you are saying). He wants guys to come in and take someone's job because he doesn't want a portal guy to come and sit the bench when he can have a freshman sit the bench and get better over time.

You skim over Nil like it is just some minor thing.

Most of us will agree Coleman doesn't have any loyalty to any particular school...

But none of us will ever know how much NIL he wanted.

Clemson did go after at least 1 player in the portal. So he was willing to bring in kids that could take roster spots

We have know idea if clemson ever attempted any others.
