Forget where I read that. People assume it was Auburn, which makes sense. But it was Miss St.

Wrong is absolute but you couldn’t be more wrong. Walter Riggs from Auburn created the football program and modeled it after AllBarn. Here’s the link: https://clemsontigers.com/the-clemson-auburn-connection/
Here’s a quote from a questionable source: (Wikipedia) “Walter Riggs can be characterized as the "Father of Clemson Football", as he brought the game with him from Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (now Auburn University). The fact that Auburn and Clemson share the same mascot is no accident. Riggs allowed his players to pick the team mascot and, although he may have influenced their decision, the players chose Tigers because Princeton University had just won the national championship. Riggs helped organize and coach the infant Tiger team in 1896. With little money to spend on uniforms, Riggs brought some of Auburn's old practice uniforms with him, which happened to have orange and navy jerseys.[1] Because the jerseys had gone through a few washboard scrubbings, they were quite faded, the navy worse than the orange. So Riggs made the school's predominant color orange and the faded condition of the navy became the purplish color, officially known today as Regalia.[1] The team played as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA), the first southern athletics conference.”
All in all thank Allbarn and the Princeton Tigers. Mostly AllBarn. Although they stole the name Mike the Tiger from us and LSU “borrowed” Death Valley. We can also thank Riggs for hiring John Heisman as head coach. Although John coached almost everywhere.

I remember reading Thomas Clemson was involved in their start and U of Md I believe. Clemson began due to his bequest but I think he had a more role in the other two directly

He went to the Paris school of Mines. He worked in mines in Missouri and Cuba. He attended Norwich military preparatory school, basically his High School. I am not an expert on Clemson, but I doubt very much that Clemson College of South Carolina was model after anything in Mississippin in the late 1800's.

Clemson’s intention to create an institution of higher education is at the core of his will. Early versions of his will named the new institution Fort Hill Institute or Calhoun–Clemson College, similar to Washington-Lee University. In a letter to his friend and attorney a few years before his death, Clemson wrote that, in case the Legislature did not accept his will, that
some legally constituted association such as now holds possession of Mt. Vernon may act as trustees for the preservation of the home of the illustrious man who spent his life in the public service of his country and who dignified a state which so long trusted and honored him. [12]

The sudden death of Mike Leach really set them back, he had them on pace to be a consistent 7-9 win team, and he always recruited well at QB.
