I really don't understand this mindset.
Is it chicken #### for a coach to leave for a better opportunity or more money?
DJ probably still has dreams for the NFL draft. He ain't making it sitting on the bench at Clemson.

Agreed. We have to put ourselves in their shoes. Some may look at it as the kid giving up and not being committed….the rest of us see is a he legally per the NCAA has the opportunity to showcase his craft elsewhere…..no different in the real world. I’ve been at my job for 22 years…..doesn’t mean I can’t leave and go elsewhere if need be……pulling for DJ to find his groove al with another program.

DJ graduates next week. Good for him. He will be a Clemson graduate forever. Riding the pine does him no good, and he has hit is ceiling at Clemson on the field. Good luck finding the right situation to pursue his education and NFL dreams. He was a good kid, but it is the right time for him to move on. Let's hope Cade reminds us of Trevor and DW4....
We need to get back to winning football games with a complete Offense and Defense. Way too many 3 and out's the last 2 years.
The ACC Championship was a good start, now the Orange Bowl and 2023.....
Go Tigers, Beat Tennessee!!

I'm not sure this generation, and specifically collegiate scholarship athletes, understand the meaning of the word "commitment."

You're kidding if you think he has a future in the NFL. He was benched because he couldn't cut it in the college ranks desperate being given many more chances than he deserved.

Agree….peopling recognizing he could not take us to the elite level and speaking out was not personal, it was business. Him deciding to move on is very likely not personal, rather a business decision.

100% this! I am tired of seeing the negativity and toxic fans around here. I wish DJ well, and hope he can pick up and become the best version of himself possible. The fans that keep booing him, calling for him to be benched and calling for him to transfer and calling for our coaches to be fired are literally the first ones coming here and spewing hateful comments around. They are the ones that need to go.

I don't get your mindset. You are a player with a limited time playing to try to realise your dreams. I don't think it's fair to be stuck on a team forever if you are not playing. Especially since college football is a big time business.

But I guess loyalty is a one-way street between Dabo and DJ. Loyalty from Dabo that has given him a lot of heat from fans and media, but as soon as a change made - DJ moves on. I can't blame him. But maybe a lesson learned in this environment of transfer portal.

DJU has shown his loyalty by stepping aside and making room for another QB on the roster. I doubt you can find a single one of his teammates that doubts his loyalty. I suspect, like me and lots of Tiger fans, they wish him great success wherever he lands.

satisfied. ?? they complain because he’s playing instead of Cade and then complain when he enters the portal and say he doesn’t understand commitment. If you didn’t want him playing and call him names and degrade him do you really expect him to want to stay here??? That’s hard for a young man. I don’t blame him at all for wanting to escape all this negativity. Good for him. It’s obvious to me that Cade should have been starting a long time ago but I made a choice not to call DJ names and make it personal. If anyone is to blame it’s Dabo and the OC for not starting Cade sooner. THEY are who I feel negative about right now.

The football field is one thing; but your impact as a person off the field has been great by all accounts from people close to the program.

thats up to their current coach. Mac Brown said in his postgame press conference that he would consider someone for their bowl game even though they have entered the portal. remember, just because you enter the portal, does not mean you cant come back to the same school and play next year. its depends on whether you are enrolled in that school and are in good academic standing.

Good Luck Big Cinco! you have represented CU with more class than 99% that has come through! Although, I wish you were going to be at practice to help coach Cade through the Bowl, but we understand. I Guess Hunter Helms will be the most experienced QB in the room with this group of coaches.

Yes. Well said 835.
Hate to see him leave. My heart sinks to see this official. Was so pulling for him to have a Heisman like campaign and be entering the NFL instead of the portal. If he remains in football, I hope he obtains his dream. It's ashamed we didn't get a chance to see him on the bump here at Clemson. Remember, 100% of the true Clemson fans love you. Thanks for the memories. Go be great young man. ?

A true example of a Clemson Tiger. You are a prime example of what all of us should value and prioritize and I wish you nothing but the best. There was a lot of negative noise in your ears the past few years and you still came out and put forth your personal best effort and laid it out on the line for the team. You also seem to have been a fantastic teammate and person off the field too.
Hate to see you leave the paw behind, but I hope your next adventure brings you success.
Thanks for all you did for our program. I will always be a fan and you will always be a Tiger.

Following the game on Saturday, he specifically said he was committed to Clemson and this team, and that he wouldn't quit on them. I guess what he meant was, he wouldn't quit on them unless and until he lost his job as the starting QB.

And then he likely sat down with the coaches who made it clear that he was not going to play next year.
As a 5-star recruit who surely still would like to play at the next level, that news would have been his invitation to leave. (He doesn't want to get hurt as backup at a school where he has no future.)
I'm not sure why anyone would expect him to do otherwise.
Of course, I have a 52% rating on here because I offended people early in the season when I guaranteed he would leave after the season. We've seen his ceiling. We don't want him to stay and then lose Klubnik or Vizzina, who are young and have lots of upside. Nobody keeps three 5-star QBs on their roster. Kids don't get drafted if they ride the pines. He was graduating in December. He'd have been leaving even if he played the whole ACC CC game and the Orange Bowl.

Definitely pulling for him to get it turned around wherever he ends up.
Would like to see him in an offense that does not require the QB to run that much.

But not because I begrudge his right to leave. Wish him the best unless he plays us. It’s more about what could/should have been.
I remember the big news of his commitment, the stellar performances as a freshman. I still maintain the GA game ruined him. No one realized just how bad the entire O cast was, and his confidence was blown. Never fully got it back, and I wonder how much of that is OC. They should have invested in a dedicated QB coach. Oh well, the king is gone, long live King Klub!

If one game can ruin a person’s entire collegiate career, that person is too fragile. Statistically speaking, DJU has been an average QB and I think that’s particularly commendable, give he was a square peg in a round hole trying to run our offensive scheme. If he’s smart, he’ll look for a team that runs a more pro-style offense.

I salute all of my fellow correspondents for being so positive in their reaction to the DJ news, and like you, I wish DJ all the best. He clearly is a fine young man. However . . . I was surprised today that he did not thank Dabo by name in his exit statement. There is no other coach at the elite level who would have stuck with DJ as long as Dabo did. Until the awful start against UNC, Dabo never wavered in his belief that DJ would finally live up to the potential that made him a 5-star recruit in high school. DJ owes Dabo a lot.

We all knew this would happen. I wish him the best and hope he finds a team with an offense he can thrive in….ours was not it. The RPO/PRO was not his “cup of tea”. DJU was never in any danger of being a quick decision maker and waiting to see how he was going to play each week was like waiting on a biopsy report.

DJ, not the Clemson QB we expected

GL to DJU in the future.
As a reference, I looked at a 2020 scouting report on DJ. That report was clear what his deficiencies were... progressions, pocket collapse response, secondary passing. While he found times to get better at those deficiencies he never looked focused like a knife-edge whenever the camera panned to his face in the huddle or in the pocket. Sadly whe can count on our hands the times in the last two years in which DJ looked like a top 25 P5 QB.
Prior to the ACC Championship he was ranked 58th among his peers. As a graduating Junior, with somewhere above 600 snaps since backup for Lawrence, he plateau'd in skillset. I believe this caused this years lackluster playcalling from Streeter we all bemoaned. Why didn't he give DJ the kind of plays we saw Cade pull off against NC? Because DJ's consistency flagged so much that the play calling had to be vanilla not to turn the ball over, and lose as few yards as possible. This is why we saw screen after screen, runs this year moreso than last year, few shots down the field +15yds.
When Cade took over Saturday night the gameplan reverted to Clemson 2010-2020 with QBs who could work progressions quickly, move out of the pocket, and deliver dimes consistently beyond 15yds.
I know we've all read the posts about the supposed issues with our receivers. Yet Cade went 20-24 with only one real missed catch. I think that lays to rest the idea our WR are trash, aren't talented, aren't up to catching the ball. Honestly I think DJ's skills never transferred from practice where he could hit recievers, to gametime when the defense wasn't a Clemson teammate. At least at a level where we expected as a competent passer. For a WR the worst feeling is that you MUST catch the football regardless of how it's thrown. Over these two seasons it was pretty clear DJ thought the recievers should have caught more of his passes. And it was also clear the WRs didn't openly display disdain for those pass inconsistencies. Saturday night it was pretty clear DJ was 'being DJ'.
When Cade came in and dropped dimes and slants and moved like Boyd/Watson/Lawrence around that backfield many of you probably said the same thing to the TV I did... "That's the Clemson I know!" Because we saw the offensive mechanism of the last decade in proper working order. WR's catching passes of all types, a QB lifting up the game play and inspiring both offense and defense. And Wiggins coming in and having a tremendous game is also the Clemson we've come to expect on defense.
With DJU now entering the portal I think many of us are sighing out the 2yr held breath we've been holding in hopes that DJ would be the 5-Star in similitude to Watson/Lawrence/Boyd. He didn't give us fans much reason beyond baseline wins to believe in the higher #ALLIN mantra. Now to give DJ respect, he is a hard worker, but sometimes talent doesn't improve no matter how much training is received. I certainly hope there is hope for DJ somewhere. But then he may be one of those guys who is better as coaching staff material than player material.
He's been helpful to many players including Cade. And maybe someday down the line he'll find that place where his talents maximize beyond what we saw. It wasn't now and here at Clemson. He was a filler or placeholder much like Kelly Bryant was between Watson and Lawrence. Not able to elevate on the playing field, but get wins nonetheless. Not look like the star as bright as expected, but able to help the team. There is rumor he will be packaged with his brother for his next school... if so, maybe he can help his brother break any plateaus and achieve greatness.
Thanks DJ for what efforts you did give to Clemson. Wish you the best too. Now we look to Cade Klubnik who has restored our faith in the program that looked on the ropes from many angles. Looking forward to an Orange-Orange-Orange Bowl in a few weeks. Keeping it real and #ALLIN

The same guys that complain about Tigers that enter the portal claiming they have no loyalty nor are they committed are the first to beat Dabo down for not going to the portal to get other teams unloyal uncommitted players. I don't like any of this. I believe the powerz that be are destroying this game by an a liberal agenda that claims all things are fair and everyone gets a trophy. I'm not bashing anyone who believes that just that it's ruining the game. P.S. no I don't think anyone was being taken advantage of.

First, I am thankful that a young man came across the nation to play for my alma mater. He has been ALL IN from Day One through today and I will gladly call him a Brother Tiger for life. Good luck to DJ in whatever his future holds.
Secondly, I know this won't shame any of you who are cowardly posters on this site... hiding behind some "handle" and blasting players and coaches no matter what transpires. You should be ashamed of yourselves and the way you represent our university. It is pitiful and why I rarely read the board section.
I trust our AD, Coaches and players make me proud and do their best.
Go Tigers
