Has a problem with selling alcohol at a sporting event.

Anyone familiar with the history of South Carolina should laugh at the notion that we need to maintain some moral high ground against alcohol.

We hunt. We fish. We go to church. We watch sports. We drink. That's what we do and what we've always done.

Assuming the hand-wringing is coming from transplants from Ohio and the northeast.

Don’t go to bars. Don’t go out to dinner with friends who drink. Don’t allow it in my home. I stopped going to Clemson games 2 years ago due to health reasons. Def won’t be going back now. It was bad enough already with people inserting curse words into the cheers, chants and songs.

I probably sound like an old fuddy duddy but alcohol NEVER leads to a better experience for those who don’t drink.

I am a boringly conservative old guy. I have consumed a very comfortable quantity of alcohol for over 60 years. Clemson and Clemson sporting events have always been a part time party for me made a tad better by beer and whisky. Neither beer nor whiskey have ever caused me a legal or particularly dangerous moment. I raised my kids in church, with a respect for safety and sobriety and them with the knowledge their Dad and his crowd enjoyed booze at a party. My kids are in their 30s and 40s now, are church going believers, drink a little, have never had a problem with alcohol.

I do not 'get' the holier than thou crowd that never drinks and constantly ####### about anyone who does. A whole lot of Clemson folks enjoy a drink or six on game day. In 60+ years I Have seen almost nothing associated with alcohol at Clemson games that was problematic, even while i know lots of Moms and Dads, Grandma's and Grandads are enjoying a drink or two on Game day. And I have always thought that if my kids or grandkids got lost on a gameday at Clemson someone would rescue them and take care of them like Clemson folks are want to do drinking or not?

FWIW, I rarely miss church, one of my kids went to seminary and spends her life spreading the gospel and the other two are raising their kids in the church with some focus on knowing they have faith in
God.

My friends of 60+ years are more or less like me. They have seen me drunk and stupid, but none of us have ever been in or caused trouble.

Who are these odd balls with the much too great than necessary fear of booze? What are they talking about? What games have they been attending since 1967 that I missed?

Is booze a problem for many people? Yep it is. Is being fat and out of shape a problem for many people? You bet. Will self righteous tee totalers fix any of this? NO.

Go Tigers!!

Congrats on being ignorant, Harley.

Call me and I’d be happy to introduce you to plenty of people affected by alcohol. How about the wife whose husband died in the shower 8 months ago after drinking too much and falling. How about the wife who divorced her husband last year because he couldn’t go a day without alcohol, not to mention his kids who are now separated from him after he picked them up from school and got in a wreck because of alcohol. How about the 46 year old brother who shakes uncontrollably because he hasn’t had alcohol recently. How many kids should I introduce you to who are beaten by drunk dad. I know quite a few.

Look in the mirror with your holier than thou attitude. I don’t need a Bible verse to say alcohol is stupid. Your ignorant comments are offensive to people who actually have been effected by alcohol.

I am in my 70s and have long enjoyed alcohol without harmful or addictive problems. If someone else doesn't want to be around me, I am ok with that. Neither I nor my family have a problem with strong drink and neither do the great majority of people in the world. I feel sorry for people and families.

Of course a drunk from tailgating can enter the stadium and slosh a soda. With alcohol in the stadium now and the odds of spillage on others increasing, the type of drink containers from concessions will need to be considered. My local performing arts center sells alcohol and has a strict policy on the containers that they use for serving. To enter the seated area, you have to have their container with their approved lid to prevent spills. I am thinking that the days of the current open cups in DV may be numbered.

People smoking it everywhere, and it's legal. There's more pot being smoked in Manhattan than a Jamaican music festival headlined by Bob Marley (RIP) and Willie Nelson. What's odd to me is they don't allow people to drink in public, but they can smoke as much pot in public as they want.

Well this seems like a good opportunity to bust out one of my grandad's favorite old timer jokes...(and this just a joke people, I was raised in both houses of faith).

What's the difference between a Methodist and a Baptist?

A Methodist will say 'hello' at the liquor store.

Are you aware that South Carolina had blue laws longer than almost anyone? The north has way more of a heavy drinking culture than anywhere in the south on average.

You have it backwards. The people up north are the very ones who go to NFL games and fight after drinking at the tailgates and then all game long in the stadium. The focus needs to shift back away from the drinking and more toward watching the game we love. It just leads to obnoxious fans who cheapen the experience for those who don't want to go too far with drunkenness

My group has been sitting together for 23 years and among us there will no drunks so it will not affect me. Serving alcohol is a risk of liability and law suit. Money talks but there is consequences to consider.

I am from South Carolina and actually graduated from Clemson. If people could do it responsibly there would be no problem. As it is, some act like idiots, drop F-bombs, etc every play that doesn't end in a TD as if there were no small kids easily within earshot. Adding alcohol will not make this better, it simply will exacerbate the issue. I get the need for more revenue and will have a beer myself. Just wish people could be more respectful and under control for those around them, especially the kids.

I'm Saluda,SC born and raised, a Clemson alum, and a proud Gilbert resident, and I think selling alcohol in the stadium is a terrible idea. I went to three Clemson home games this year where no alcohol was served and to the ACC championship game where alcohol was served. Most of the people around us drank the entire game and many were sloppy drunk. Not the same atmosphere.

That if people want to drink, they will drink. Period.

Making alcohol more available isn't going to suddenly turn house wives into alcoholics. Fraternity dudes that want to get destroyed will continue to do so as they've always done. Where there's a will there is a way. They'll sneak it in and then go take several more shots at half time.

Other schools are creating revenue from alcohol sales. Clemson is already way behind. So, we are going to start selling alcohol. Just as every liquor store and gas station has been doing since before we were all born.

Really? You think you can speak for all native South Carolinians? I match 3 of your 5 criteria and I was born and raised in an area of the lowcountry where we considered anyone from north of Columbia as a potential Yankee. Sorry if I don’t fit your narrow version of what a South Carolinian is. It may surprise you to learn that people are different. Everywhere. Stereotyping people is what makes others think all southerners are dumb, gun toting rednecks. We’re not all dumb and we’re not all rednecks and we don’t all tote guns. Some of us are all three and some of us aren’t any of the 3 and a lot fall somewhere in between.
I know a lot of South Carolinians who will have concerns about alcohol sales in DV. There are a lot like me who won’t care one way or the other. I know a lot who drink, but don’t drink and drive. I know a lot who drink in moderation and a lot who can’t handle their alcohol or themselves. And I know a lot who don’t drink at all. If every South Carolinian you know fits your description, you should try broadening your horizons.

Loud, rude people spilling beer on me and young kids. When they banned it the difference was amazing! And I think I remember the owners saying crowds were bigger. I go to all home games and almost never see drinking. Maybe none. Seems everyone is having a great time without alcohol.

Exactly. Moderation is the key. You are correct that some people just aren’t capable of moderating their alcohol consumption. My brother died at 51 because he couldn’t and his liver just finally had enough. I know a couple of other people who are fine until they start drinking. Then they become combative and have problems because they just don’t know when to stop.

I drink, so I try not to judge, but thankfully I understand my limits.

Well I see many families with small children sloppy drunk at the tailgate. Do you honestly think they are going to see anything in the stadium they haven't seen out in the parking lot? Also it will encourage fans to stay in the stadium and not leave just to get some alcohol. You are also still going to have the few drunks around you no matter what. Just something you have to deal with. Now I would never take my kids to Columbia under ANY circumstances! Lol

I think the largest opposition if from those who abstain from drinking alcohol or just don't want to be around alcohol in general, which I completely understand. Everyone has their reasons, but it just isn't realistic.

I like to enjoy a drink responsibly and I don't like to be around those (drunk or sober) who act like a fool. I just tell my kids, just because you see drunks or hear cursing doesn't mean it's acceptable. So selling alcohol in the stadium will not turn Death Valley into a bourbon street mosh pit of drunks puking and spilling beers on women and children. The majority of the spectators paid $100+ to see a football game. And many like to enjoy a beer and a hot dog while doing so. Unfortunately, there will always be a small percentage there to get hammered on $15 beers, but they are already in the stadium. The majority of students are not of legal drinking age anyway. They fuel up at their tailgate before the game, at halftime or sneak alcohol into the stadium.
