There are some smart deer in my area

not only have they survived to maturity, these does keep having their babies in my yard to avoid the coyotes in the woods that are over half a mile away. Saw a newborn fawn in my azaleas today, making it the 3rd doe to drop her fawns here since April. The does go back to the woods during the day but return to my yard usually right at dark but sometimes I have seen them during daylight hours.

I thought you were going to say that they are using the deer crossings on the highways, eliminating traffic accidents.

The deer hunter observations that deer know when deer season starts and disappear until it is over is true.

Penn State University which does a lot of studies on deer, did a study that proved that deer do know when deer season starts and do head for more remote areas.

Google it.

That is the joke around my dad’s house. He has 15 acres and year round the deer come out and graze behind his house in the field almost every single morning and evening. But come hunting season you all of a sudden quit seeing the bucks. The doe’s will hang around during that time but you typically only see the bucks every now and then if you spot one with a head light at night coming down the driveway.

In East Texas they will have fawns between patio homes on a golf course in a subdivision with a leash law in effect...sometimes when mama is gone the fawns would come to the edges between the houses and watch folks playing golf...these deer also have no fear of golfers when they mature...walk up to your cart for a peanut butter cracker...there are some red foxes there that do similar things!

It’s awesome when you have deer thriving on your property. We built in Erwin NC in 2011 on many acres and had the same does with new babies every year. They were heck on my fruit trees but were such a joy. They even got used to us being on the porch and wouldn’t bolt when they saw us. I couldn’t bring myself to hunt my own property. I harvested many miles away to ensure my deer were safe. I had many people beg to hunt my property and lease a portion but my wife woulda killed me. Our six acre and two acre ponds were huge deer magnets.
